Getting a fair deal on taxis Taxi drivers can be rude and unpleasent in Kiev. Some are charming and helpful. Always negotiate a fare before you get into the cab - and pay with exact money. Otherwise the taxi may drive off with your change. Hotel receptions seem to have a scam going on taxis and are the most expensive way to negotiate a fare. On the other hand most restaurants seem to be more responsible and will get you a taxi back to your hotel at a resonable price. Always carry a card from the hotel with the hotel name on it in Ukrainian lettering to show to the taxi driver. Many taxi drivers don't read Roman script and may not understand your pronunciation of the hotel name.
