When we arrived at the hotel we were not welcomed by the member of staff. Perhaps her English was poor, I don't know - but she was almost mute & we did not feel very welcome. We were taken to our room in utter silence in fact!

ur room (One, The Willows) was not very clean. In fact it was dirty. However, the bathroom was very clean but there was no shower, I was really, really surprised by this & wish I had had the foresight to ask if there would be a shower - I had just assumed there would be which was a mistake on my part.

The room looked out over a dirty plastic corrugated roof that had seen better days & also a skip & rubbish pile. This was really dissappointing as I had booked into a 'Country House Hotel' - not a municipal tip. I really felt annoyed by this, I don't think it would take too much care to make sure your guests cannot see rubbish out of their bedrooms.

The worst part was when we went to bed. We returned to the hotel at about 10pm to find a wedding in full swing. The noise was dreadful. We made our booking on about May 5th 2006 & no mention was made to us that a wedding wuld be taking place. The disco finished at about 12pm & the last guests went to bed at about 1.50am. We were up for an appointnment at 8am after less than 6 hours sleep.

To be honest, for £65 a night in a 'Country House Hotel' I expect a clean room, a country view & to have a peaceful night's sleep. I was dissappointed on all counts. The breakast however, was superb. The family who have bought this hotel are clearly trying to improve things, but I did not personally rate it as a 3 star hotel.

I feel the brochure is unrepresentative of what is actually on offer.

Top Local Tips for Rhayader

Riverside Walk At the time we went it was very wet. Needed stout, waterproof walking boots. Town is an old market town. Very nice, family run shops. Really recommend the outfitters shop. Some superb small villages surrounding. Don't miss the Elan valley. Easy access to Aberystwyth with some great, food serving pubs nearer to Aberystwyth - Gorgeous, open countryside Rhayader end.

Local bus services If you look at it on a map you might think that a car is essential to get there but prepare to be surprised as there's a bus from Llandrindod Wells national rail station roughly every two hours Monday to Saturday. Once in Rhayader itself you don't really need transport if you're on a walking break.
