Historical Traveller Reviews of Legacy Royal Victoria Hotel

Pleased our stay was free as a tent would have been more comfortable

from lnicholas
We stayed at this hotel in July 2004. At the time my husband was working away regularly, staying in a 'Quality Hotel' near his workplace and saved loyalty rewards for free nights at other hotels in the group. Having had a pleasant stay in the Cambridge Sleep Inn, which was virtually brand new, quiet, clean and comfortable, we went for a 2 nights at Llanberis. We know the area and are keen fellwalkers, but had not previously stayed there. It looks quite grand from the outside and we expected it to be of a good standard. Booking the free nights was difficult, as initially I spoke to a member of staff who was rather vague and so I decided to confirm the details in writing. We then received a garbled phone message to the effect that we could not use the free stay vouchers. I contacted the central reservations line who did arrange the booking for me.
On arrival we were given a rather small room with a tiny window, which was hot and in need of some renovation. Much of it looked like it was decorated with cheap formica coated plywood. The bed was extremely uncomfortable especially as we felt that our feet were higher than our heads. On investigation, we found that the whole bed actually folded down out of the plywood contraption on the wall. We rebuilt the bed so that our feet were at the wall end and at least we did manage to get some sleep. We left a note asking the chambermaid to leave the bed set up like this, but they remade it so we had to redo it all again the following night.
Our room was near to the lift, which announced the floor number loudly in both English and Welsh as it arrived, so we were treated to this serenade late into the night and it restarted the following morning at about 7am as the coach parties surfaced for breakfast. Every time someone walked along the corridor outside the floorboards creaked inside the room. We were also disturbed by the noise of a computer printer in the housemaid's office nearby which started up early in the mornings. Both nights there were functions on in the public rooms so people were wandering around the corridors until 2 or 3am.
Breakfast was fine in a grand dining room, but the service was slow. The hotel as a whole was tired looking and seemed poorly run. Public bars were smoky and rather dismal. When we came to check out the staff tried to charge us for breakfast, but as we had the details of our booking which clearly stated breakfast was free, and as a large queue built up behind us, they relented. I would have refused to pay a penny for the stay which was probably the worst room I have ever stayed in a commercial hotel. It made me ashamed to be British to think that foreign tourists pay good money for such poor accommodation. The standard charge for a night at this hotel is £110. I hope that the room we were given is not normally let out to paying guests. It appears that the standards of the rooms are extremely variable as it is a large rambling old building.
Llanberis as a village has an excellent location, but hasn't really developed the facilities of a fully fledged tourist centre as yet - it still has its old mining town character. Other villages nearby such as Beddgelert, Capel Curig and Betws y Coed are more scenic and have a larger selection of restaurants and pubs. We did find a small & excellent restaurant (probably Y Copa Peak) on the main street nearby which did a fabulous rack of Welsh lamb.

Hated the Royal Victoria (Quality Snowdonia)

This chain should be renamed "Dubious Quality". Stayed as business traveller for one night. When my colleaugue requested breakfast at 7.00am was told that normally breakfast doesn't open till 8 but as a coach party was leaving early, we could breakfast at 7.15. Coach party was provided with Full English but I only wanted scrambled egg on toast but was told (after waitress checked with kitchen) that it wouldn't be possible. Plenty of fried eggs on other breakfast plates, scrambling too difficult? Otherwise a tired looking hotel, albeit beautifully situated. Staff appeared disinterested, room was musty smelling, shower could do with a good scrub.

An OK stay

Stayed here for four nights. Our room was a great sized double + single family room, with a sofa bed and two easy chairs/coffee table; the bathroom had been recently refurbished and was immaculate and a good size.
We had room 204 which has a great view of Lake Padarn through the trees.

We had a good rate of £65.00 pppn d,b & b.

The hotel has lovely grounds and is an impressive building. However, as other reviewers have noted it definately needs some updating to return what once must have been very grand rooms to their former splendour.

On the whole, the staff were extremely friendly (especially the bar and table staff). Drinks and bar food are very reasonably priced.

As part of our package, we ate a la carte in the Conservatory which has stunning views of the Llanberis mountain backdrop ..... the food was not so stunning as the menu did not change for the four nights we ate there (previously informed of this possibility in the hotel notes). It was a case of a good meal one night, not so good the next - plus the vegetables had been kept in an oven to keep warm and were a bit dried up and crispy!
However, the waiters/sommeliers were wonderful and it was still a pleasant experience.

Not bad at all, but needs some updating.

I would not recommend this hotel to any one. It was awful

We booked and paid for in full a one night stay to give us a break from our travels. This was a holiday arranged in January 2006. The date of our stay was 19/06/06.
When we arrived we were told that no reservation had been made for us, after a quick phone call to the help line of the people we arranged the stay with, a room was found in a annexe with no view other than the car park and the room smelt of damp bathrooms.
We would never stay at this hotel ever.

Great location/comfortable room/aging public areas

from A TripAdvisor Member
We took a 3 week driving tour of Gt. Britain in June 2005 and are just now getting around to responding. We spent 2 nights at this hotel, choosing Llanberis and then subsequently Chester as a base from which to tour N. Wales. We don't feel that this hotel pretends to be anything other than what it is - that being mainly a base from which to tour Snowdonia. True, it is certainly showing its age in most of the public areas, but we received a warm welcome and excellent service. We found our small room to be more than adequate for our needs (altough it did not have a view) it was extremely clean and well outfitted with a beautiful, sparkling bathroom and an opening window which was most welcome during an unexpected heat wave! Because of its close poximity to the Snowdon Mountain Railway we were able to wait to be sure of the weather before planning our trip, and then walked the five minutes down to the station - since we aren't hikers in the true sense of the word, we felt it was well worth taking the ride up to the summit - the views are stunning! We felt the only draw back here was that it also catered to coach tour groups, which made it extremely overcrowded especially at mealtimes. Breakfasts were delicious, but since they were not buffet style and there were several coach tours in the main dining room, seating was scarce for the rest of the guests, and service, although first rate, was extremely slow. We chose room service for our evening meals, ordering from the very good bar menu because the restaurant was overcrowded once again, and we also felt the prices were way too high. All in all, we were pleased with our stay here.

A Step Back in Time

We booked this hotel on a whim doing little research, as we usually do. If we had read the reviews I firmly believe we would not have ventured near. Having said that we have just returned from a pleasant weekend stay. We acknowledge that the hotel is frequented by coach parties and that the hotel caters for mass tourism. It appeared to us that those guests who were not in the coach parties were given preferential treatment.

Our room was small and appeared to be recently decorated. The bathroom, again, was small but adequate. It was in the 'modern' wing of the hotel and I would recommend that anyone booking should request one of these rooms. As we were making our way down to breakfast one morning we did look into some of the 'older' rooms as they were being serviced and they did appear to be dated and in need of refurbishment.

Breakfast and dinner was taken in the large dining room. The restaurant manager - seen only in the mornings - needs a to take a course in customer service, he is curt and, in my opinion, responsible for the poor service at breakfast. The self service area frequently ran out of juice and cereals and, on several occasions, he left guests waiting to be seated whilst he disappeared 'who knows where'! There are plenty of staff but they do not receive the guidance they need, they do their best. At dinner our experience was totally different and each evening we were placed in either the small dining room or the conservatory. The service was pleasant and efficient. Don't expect gourmet, but the food is well presented and reasonably priced. On one evening our drinks arrived part way through the main course, amid apologies we received complimentary wine.

This hotel is 'acceptable' for a short stay only and is in need of an overhaul. It doesn't deserve it's three star rating at present but I hope that this 'old lady' will be restored to her Victorian grandeur before too long.

Strange Place average age 75 or over

Booked this hotel last minute on LateRooms, given that we only piad £35 a room with breakfast we didnt expect much. Our rooms were terrible exactly like you were stepping back in time when your grandma was small. Old flowery curtains that just fitted the window, TV that only showed BBC (although the book said SKy TV), sink in the bedroom, the tiniest bathroom I have ever seen you could touch each end wall whilst sitting on the toilet!! The beds were clean but the overall feel of the room was not very pleasant. You culd even hear the people next door snoring!!

The hotel could be very nice but needs updating. The dining room was ok and the breakfast was good.

Be warned though if you are under the age of 70 this hotel is not for you. The entertainment on the night we stayed was a magician- ok if you like that kind of thing but not for us.

The only good thing about this hotel was the views which were lovely but all we could see from our room was the coaches that left at 6am each morning, hence no chance of sleeping late.

If you are considering booking this hotel through late rooms I think you should reconsider, the hotel keeps the worst rooms for you, you might just manage for one night but I couldnt have stayed there any longer.

Lovely hotel with great views

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Quality Hotel Snowdonia. Rooms are really large and comfortable. We would definetly stay here again!

Lovely Room, Lovely Views

from Dive-barbie
Booked this last minute with Laterooms. Paid less than others in our group, so expected the box room. Instead got a beatiful room in the old part of the house (205). Large, comfortable (a liitle warm for us, but turned the heating off). Two large windows with magnificent views, great bathroom (though the hot water took about 15 mins to come through), clean crisp sheets, very comfy bed.
Breakfast in the conservatory was as expected, though I like my food a little hotter - the views were lovely, even though we were watching the sweeping rain over Lake Padarn. Propably helped that some of our group speak Welsh, so we continued to get served in the bar late the first night. Would use this hotel again.

Coach party hotel - the place has no soul!!

from Traveller99963
There is nothing wrong with the hotel itself, but it has no soul at all. It has a couple of impersonal bars, a restaurant which is either full with a coach party or nearly empty, and no other facilities to pass away an hour or so. Would recommend for a one night stay, but no more. Any more than a couple of nights and you would be slitting your wrists!! We planned to stop four nights, but left after two to retain our sanity.

The room was fine as far as it went, nicely decorated and a reasonable size, but nowhere really to sit other than on the bed. The 'satellite tv' turned out to be Sky News and Discovery. We switched the radiator to frost setting, but it was still hot & stuffy in the room with the window open, even though it was fairly cool outside. The bathroom was pretty good. There was plenty of storage space in the room. A minibar would have been nice.

The restaurant was aging (both decoration and average age of client) and the waiting staff were understaffed. My wife ordered poached egg, which was cold and could have been bounced off the wall by the time it was served!

The staff in the bar seemed to consider customers to be an inconvenience who should be ignored.

Llanberis itself is a strange place, it has plenty of tourists milling around but doesn't really seem to welcome tourists.

Top Local Tips for Llanberis

Slate mine,Snowden and betys y Coed Slate mine nearby is a good day out and obviously walking Snowden.

The train station for Snowdon is only 100 yds from the hotel. Stay inthe weekday if possiple.

Land of my Fathers Take the train outside the hotel and travel up to the sumit, if you travel before 9.00 the price is much cheaper, well worth visiting Portmerion, Castle's of Conwy, Beau Maris, Caernarfon and Harlech all within easy reach by car. Llandudno and the Great Orme and also up in the Cable Car.
