Was on business and treated like a third rate citizen, rude staff, poor service, shabby interior and dirty rooms. Four people from my party booked in and not one of us got the same standard of room and all agreed it has a long way to go!

The Curates Egg of Hotels

from Walklates world wide whims
When asked by the Bishop whether the curate was enjoying his egg which the Curate had already determined was bad he said that it was good in parts so as not to offend the Bishop. A four star hotel charging the rates that this one does cannot be good in parts.

Paradoxically it makes its money I would assume from the heaving masses attending the Millennium Stadium. The staff, however, are clearly not impressed by the onslaught of such crowds. The rooms are poorly maintained. Lots of things dont work and the rooms are, at best, pokey. One doesnt really expect to find a bouncer on the door throwing out a guest/miscellaneous drunk. The crowds in the bar seemingly didnt mind paying the exhorbitant prices and the Hotel appeared powerless to do anything about the raucous noise.

Overall verdict. If you are going to Cardiff to support your team, are looking for somewhere to get drunk, you're not on a budget, dont intend to sleep and you enjoy poor service then this is the hotel for you. If the only way I could watch my team was to stay here I think I would rather go and watch Man Utd.

Poor service and poorly maintained.

Our tour group spent one night at this hotel. I don't know what the room cost, but the place wasn't worth much! When we arrived the staff lost one of our bags between the front door and our room. You'd think that would be nearly impossible to do, but you'd be wrong. The errant bag was finally located after the child-prodigy manager was goaded and prodded. A couple of our fellow travellers had to demand a room-change since their initial rooms were uninhabitable. Our room was hot as blue blazes and never did really cool off, and the ceiling fan was broken, and the windows screwed shut! I will say that the Thistle is very centrally located and the buffet breakfast was good. Small praise for what is supposed to be a first-rate hotel.

I thought I had been sentanced!

One night in a single room at the Thistle in Cardiff - When I walked into that room, I thought I entered a prison cell! It was small, dark, dank and my company was paying for the privilege!

Check-in was efficient, Dinner was good, but painfully slow, breakfast was adequate.

Decided that if I have to go to Cardiff again, I'll stay elsewhere, perhaps the local prison has bigger cells!

Pleasant hotel in prime location

from djdamesWales_UK
I booked this hotel for a group night out in Cardiff, partly due to its location and partly its reasonable rates for a capital city hotel. Having read previous reviews I was expecting a complete flea-pit. In fact, it is a stunning building in a prime location where we had a comfortable stay. The lobby is attractive, with a pleasant bar and check in was quick and efficient. Staff are helpful. There is parking available in the grounds (for a fee). I can't comment on the food as I didn't eat there. The rooms were absolutely fine, everything worked, it seemed in good condition to me. There were people making a noise in the corridors at 3-4am but I can't blame the hotel for that....there was plenty of tea/coffee condiments, bathroom items, towels etc. and quite a pleasant view over cardiff centre. Beds were comfortable and there was no smoke smell in my room. I would stay here again if the price was right.....My other guests also liked the hotel.

The worst food ever!

from smcg1
I have never eaten food so bad in my life. Dinner was stewed steak on a pile of scrambled eggs with some cut up frozen chips (pretending to be Potatoes Dauphinoise). desert was tinned custard with what tasted like a mr kiplings apple pie.

Lunch for the conference I attened was stale sandwiches and various fried things (99p a bag at iceland I think).

Breakfast was ..... actually ok.... though the staff were invisible.

My room was tatty and grubby but not the worst I've stayed in (I've been to the Thistle Birmingham too!)

Avoid this chain at all costs.

UGH

This hotel lived down to all previous reviewers have said. Room reeked of tobacco - impossible to cure. Table lamp didn't work. "Fresh fruit" rotting on filthy plate. No loo-roll holder. No broadband or wifi. Shocking TV reception. No foreign TV channels offered (in the "capital of Wales"). Breakfast a joke - no bread for toasting. Cup of warm brown liquid passed off as coffee. Reception failed to pass on messages. Interior decor tatty - peeling wall-paper. Only good points: carpark and excellent shower. Never again.

Old and tatty

From the outside and the public areas the hotel gives an impression of oppulance to match its four star rating. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the rooms. Although I was fortunate to have an executive suite both the furnishings and the decoration were in a very poor standard. Most of the paintwork was heavily chipped and then carpets worn. The minibar was empty and the safe was not working. The TV remote was faulty and a number of bulbs were not working. Although the bathroom was adequate in size, the flush mechanism was faulty. My colleague was unfortunate to have a single room. I have seen bigger broom cupboards. The small size of this room and the poor substandard condition of the furniture made it an ideal comparison to a prison cell.

The Best Customer service Ever

I work for a large US company and have been working in the UK for 8mths, This trip was my first to Cardiff. When i checked in i found the staff very helpfull (not unlike what we get back home) and found them to really take an interest in me. Check in was fast and my room was clean and the air con set just right. after a shower i decided to hit the town and the reception staff again pointed me in the right direction (Had a really good night!) I would say that this is one of the most frendly Hotels i have ever stayed at and on the back of this im looking into changing our group deal from the ?????? group to thistle!

The only thing that lets this hotel down is the brown Mark on Rooms Ceiling, but apart from that the board of the Thistle should be very proud of their Staff.

FIVE STARS

Good location!

from margarida
I have stayed in the hotel for 3 nights in an executive double room facing the pedestrian area.
The location was exellent just in the shopping area and a sort walk to the main attractions in Cardiff!!
The room was large but with a very small bathroom.
At night it was difficult to sleep because of the street noise!!
The hotel has a car park with an easy access.
Good breakfast for an English hotel!!

Avoid this hotel

For a supposedly four star hotel this is terrible. The hotel requires several million £s spending on a complete facelift. The lobby and reception staff are fine, but elsewhere the decor is old and tatty, the pillows in our room were of the cheap, thin, foam variety. There's nothing in the way of soundproofing and you can hear every footstep in the corridors and rooms above. Granted on the two nights we stayed the hotel was full, but that doesn't excuse the lack of hot water in the room - luke warm baths and showers are definitely not my thing. Housekeeping is extremeley poor, we saw breakfast trays still outside rooms at 4.30 in the afternoon. The restaurant where you have your buffet breakfast is dirty. The tables have stainless steel legs and bases which obviously hadn't had a polish for a long time, our chairs still had crumbs on them from the previous occupant and we had used butter on our table! The waiters bring large pots of stewed tea and coffee to the tables rather than each table having its own teapot. At £200 per room per night (rip off rugby weekend prices) this was not a cheap hotel. Don't stay there!

City Tour and castle if you buy city tour tickets £8 per adult you get 10% of entry to castle

Cardiff Bay Go and see the Bay it is really nice - however it only has bars and food places (unless you are a Torchwood/Doctor Who Fan in which there is lots to see)

taxi nightmare If your thinking of stopping over after a night out in Cardiff then book a hotel in the city centre. Taxi's are hard to book and even harder to flag down. Just don't be tight spend that little bit more and book in a central hotel (ie Parc thistle hotel)
