Stayed here from 20-24 October 2007, one of the best hotels I've ever been to! Staff friendly, rooms comfortable, food excellent! Also, great views of Cardiff Bay from the balcony. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Nothing to see in Cardiff!!!

from stellastreet
To the person from London who said there is nothing to see in Cardiff with few fine dining options all I've got to say is do your research! You have to know where you are going and you obviously didn't.

Wales Millennium Centre - opening

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having stayed at the hotel during the opening celebrations of the Wales Millennium Centre I have got to say this is THE hotel in Cardiff. The hotel was wall to wall with Welsh Celebrities performing at the theatre, which is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel and in fact we had a fab view of the concert hall from our room. This is our second visit and they have a new chef who has greatly improved the food which was delicious. The spa was just as I remembered - peaceful, and relaxing. and as for the person who expected to book a treatment on arrival they have obviously never been to a spa before!!! I will definately be returning again andr again and again.

Actually pretty special

from Holly29
I cannot actually believe the bad reviews on this website, because I am one of the world's fussiest hotel goers and yet I had a truly great time there this weekend. Me and a mate decided that we needed to get away from the stresses of London life for a few days so we booked a residential spa package, which included the room rate, 2 treatments each, and breakfast, lunch and dinner for all days. And we had a brilliant time. The hotel is v impressive. All rooms look out over the Bay and ours was lovely, with a nice balcony with a great view over the Bay and all mod cons. The room wasn't mega-huge, but then it was just an ordinary twin room and the suite next door looked massive. We loved the food. Breakfast and lunch was served in the spa lounge and it was always healthy, tasty and the lounge has great views over the Bay as well. Each day we had free exercise lessons, and then full use of the Spa. How anyone can criticise the Spa I don't know. I prefer it to the Spas at other top UK hotels such as Babington House, Cowley Manor etc... It has great underwater loungers with pressure jets, a huge jacuzzi, and a fabulous swimming pool all of which again have that great view over the Bay. It is true that they only allow children in the pool at limited times each day, but to be honest this is fabulous! Us adults need relaxation and space away from children sometimes and not to have them splashing in the pool was refreshing and peaceful.
Before dinner each night we had cocktails in the Bar and a great 3-course dinner in the Tides restaurant. We never found a problem with service.... in fact everyone was so friendly and when we left our keycards in our room, someone came all the way down the Spa to give us new ones.
We loved it. I agree that it is not perhaps the tip-top 5 star that one gets sometimes. But it's a chain hotel, for goodness' sake. I think it compared favourably to its sister hotel the Hotel de Russie in Rome, which I stayed in this summer and certainly the spa was nicer at the St. Davids.

great hotel, terrible restaurant service

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here early last October. The hotel istelf is really great - comfy rooms, a lovely spa and friendly staff. We had a nightmare in the restaurant though. Having booked a table for 8pm by 9.15 we were still waiting for someone to take our order. We felt totally ignored. When i brought this to his attention, the restaurant manager was arrogant, pompous and untterly condescending - i couldn't believe his attitude towards his guests! We finally got food brought to our room at 10.30 - much too late to enjoy it. He totally ruined our night.

clinical and child unfriendly

from PaddyBristol
The most cliical and sharply designed hotel I have stayed in. Great views and friendly staff. Nice spa (just nice not great) but it discriminates against children's access. Food was poor at a dinner I attended in the evening but breakfast was outstanding.

Hotel outshines the city

from Kensington
Stayed here Feb 04 for a weekend break. We had a Junior Suite which was very spacious with great views of the bay. There wasn't much to see in Cardiff apart from the Castle and Bay area but the nightlife was good. The spa was nice and had a good view of the bay. If you want a treatment book well in advance, when we called for a massage on arrival we were told they were booked up for the next two weeks. The restaurant was excellant and we ate there for every meal as Cardiff is lacking in fine dining options.

d expect from a 5* hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at The St. Davids twice & experienced probems on both occasions. On my last stay the headboard was torn in my room, there were stains on the bedspread and I was served awful cold food in Tides bar! The small rooms need a re-furb as does the spa, this hotel does not desreve a 5* rating, I would give it 3.

Disappointing

from HJMoore
We recently stayed at the hotel for a family wedding. Hotel staff are very polite and friendly. Food and service was good. Public areas and rooms (very small considering the prices) look nice but aren't very comfortable. If you are travelling with children this is not the hotel to choose, they only allow children to use the pool for 2 short periods per day. Although our return flight was late evening and the hotel was quiet, they were't keen on giving us a late checkout. They wanted to charge £20 per hour from 11am till 3pm then a full nights stay! Spa pool area in need of redecoration, the rips in the ceiling really let it down. Spa doesn't reach the standards of Turnberry or numerous other 5 star destination spas. Make sure you get a cheap deal as this hotel isn't work the rack rates.

Its as nice as it looks!

I stayed at the St Davids hotel & spa on Sunday 8th August 2004. After reading a few reviews on here i was a bit concerned about the car park and whether there would be a space.... it was fine and there were plenty of spaces. I sometimes wonder how people can complain about things like that - especially when there are 2 car parks next door to the hotel!!??

Check in was very nice and we were escorted to our room, we were on the 3rd floor which offered nice views over cardiff bay. The room was very smart and the bathroom was decorated nicely although both quite small. As it was quite late in the evening i decided to have my evening meal in my room..... im so glad i did. The food was exceptional and our table was set up perfectly.

Sadly i did not have time to try out the Spa etc, it did look very nice. Overall it is a very nice hotel in a good location. Personally i expected more from St Davids, i would still recommend it if only to say you had stayed there!

A great hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
An excellent hotel in an outstanding location a few minutes walk from Mermaid Quay with all its bars and restaurants. The spa at the hotel is first class and during our stay was not too busy. The bar is also great, but very much 5 star prices !!! This hotel even beats the Lowry (another Rocco Forte hotel) which takes some doing.

Top Local Tips for Cardiff
