A glorified hostel
from A TripAdvisor MemberTry IBIS up the road.
Blue dingy interior - not a nice hotel.
We stayed here for £58 per night . I don't usually write revews but had to after the ones on this place were so misleading.
I would not stay here again
Pretty Crap Hotel!!
from MarkS1975The walls are paper thin. Next door room had TV on which was VERY loud, annoying when you trying to sleep at midnight and 1am!
Watch the checkout scam. 10:30am is the checkout time if you want to stay till 12pm it's an extra £10.
Heating terrible....Small electric fire which doesn't heat much!
Downstairs bar looks like a 70s flashback....not sure if it's supposed to be retro on purpose or just not materialised since the 70s!
rubbish
from A TripAdvisor Member2* star hotel unless on 9th floor
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe stained corridors and rooms are embarrassing if you organise this accommodation for a group of people so beware. The rooms seemed to range from boxes to open plan corner rooms but all had wet patches on the floor and just a small wall heater for the room.
The only thing that did not dissapoint us in this hotel was the breakfast which although not being a full english is a very good continental buffet.
My advice - if you're looking for somewhere nice don't stay here unless you pay for the nice new rooms on the 9th floor.
Cool hotel, good value
from HolidayHoney82The first time we stayed we had a room on the ninth floor overlooking the city - a fantastic veiw if you like urban scenery. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The only downside on that visit was the dirty scum line on the bath - yuk.
The last time we visited, which was this summer, we had a room at the back overlooking the railways, not as interesting as the city veiw but still quite cool. The bathroom appeared to be cleaner on this visit.
Also, we appreciated the cool drinking water available on each floor on those hot days.
I did notice that the carpets in the corridor could do with a bit of a clean but other than that the cleanliness of the hotel was good. The breakfast was buffet style so if you prefer to have a full-english brought to your table you'd better stay somewhere else.
One of the lifts makes a funny noise so use the stairs if you are wary of lifts!
Overall, we enjoyed both of our stays at The Big Sleep, good value for money. We would almost definately stay here again on our next visit to Cardiff. Highly recommended!!
I thought it was great
from stuartdNewburyUkThe room was spacious clean and bright and the bed was really comfortable.
Breakfast was fine and the staff were pleasant. I recently stayed in the Copthorne Birmingham which was three times more expensive and save for some unnecessary frills was far worse.
Good location and Price, thats it!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel has got one thing right, it has a fantastic location to the major attractions in cardiff, including the CIA, Millenium Stadium and shopping centre's. The second thing its doing right is the cost.
The hotel used to be an old office block, i think it would have been a nicer hotel if they kept the offices and just put in beds.
The corridors and hallways are very narrow, still with the traditional office style carpets. the room are spacious with great views of the city, (just ask for a city view, as the other views are looking at railway tracks and a building site)! there are very uncomfortable beds, no furniture and a bathroom fit for a council tennant (sorry of that offends).....
there are absolutely zero leisure facilities available, and the bar and 'restaraunt' are not worth the mention. no irons are supplied to your rooms, there is a communal ironing section located on each floor. the hotel staff are obviously not had much experience in the hospitality sector (when i was checking in, one of the staff was slagging off previous guests who just left the reception area)...the best way to describe the manner of the staff is 'down to earth'.....expect no luxuries here, but i guess you get what you pay for these days.
so if you like a 'b&b style' hotel on a larger scale, this is the one for you.
good value for money, no frills attatched
from frequent_flyer77I liked the decor, and the whole hotel is better than the normal 'budget' hotels offering
Breakfast is an eat your fill, help yourself buffet, all the staff we met were polite, and knew their jobs. Bar is okay, if a little quiet. Room was basic but clean, with some great views over the city.
If you are in Cardiff, on a limited budget, this beatsthe travelodge and Ibis hands down!!
be warned.....
from A TripAdvisor MemberTHINK: Noisy, dayglo paint straight from Sesame Street, cramped & stained corridors, MDF fittings that look that they are cast-offs from a TV DIY show, the joy of 'floral' shower curtains straight from the sixties and simply the worst breakfast that could be imagined.
Other older guests and couples we saw at breakfast simply looked stunned and embarrased sitting on their plastic chairs in the bright orange chamber that pretends to be the breakfast room.
I am sure that is someone's idea of a "designer/minimalist hotel" - but it is not mine.
Nevertheless, it is perhaps ideal for drunk students and younger partygoers who will feel right at home with the vomit stained carpets, rooms reeking of stale smoke and humping sounds from rooms above and below and to the sides when they come to crash out.
It is not ideal for older couples looking for a quiet and romantic stay in Cardiff, families, your gran, people who wear suits or anyone who assumes a hotel is actually a place to sleep.
Nice building site and railway view BTW for those with a trainspotting or construction fetish.
I give it 1 star (since I can't actually give it zero) for the full multisensory memories of my student years it brought back and the complete joke of it all which is still so amusing to myself and my colleagues. So to sum up - We ultimately managed to have a great laugh about it... don't let it be a YOUR expense.
brilliant

Delicious Italian Dineros restaurant at Cardiff Bay, next to Pizza Express, near the carousel did us an absolutely fantastic lunch, best spag bol I have ever tasted (apart from my wife's of course...) and I will try to have an evening meal next time.Eat after you have tried the river bus trip that can take you from the castle park to the Bay (£5 return, £3 single).
Restaurant Good choice in Mill Lane, particularly Latin American Las Iguanas
Brewery Quarter! Head down St. Mary's street and visit the Brewery Quarter. Lots of great cheap places to eat there such as Nandos, Chiquitos etc. etc. Very lively and warm atmosphere there and no smoking in the outdoor courtyards! To avoid the breakfast at the hotel, eat at the Prince of Wales pub (also on St. Marys street) - a full English is £2.50!
