Historical Traveller Reviews of Park Plaza Hotel

Fab Hotel

from CathalS
Having stayed in so many hotels over the years and having worked in the travel industry for over 7yrs.I have to stay this hotel is great. From the moment we checked in the standard of service we got from the front desk was second to none. The lobby is very tastefully done and trendy. As we opened the door to our very large excutive room, our jaws hit the floor. Plenty of style, comfort and space. A king size bed, a lovely sitting room area complemented with our large plasma screen nevermind the slate & marble bathroom.

The Pool in the laguna spa is great for a proper swim in the morning, the restaurant/bar is large and airy and has a nice terrace to dine al fresco even if it was busy the weekend we arrived -due to Madonna playing her concert on the Sunday.

So ignore all the other bad reviews, those people are just complainers and are a real nightmare to deal with in the travel industry! Have a wonderful time when you stay in the Park plaza, having stayed in the Hilton before, l wouldnt stay anywhere else again in Cardiff except for the wonderful Park Plaza-enjoy..

Great hotel, very stylish

from PRJ
This hotel is one of the nicest city hotels I have stayed in recenty. The quality of the bedroom and the bathroom was excellent. The beds in particular were extemely comfortable.
The swimming pool was great and quiet too.
The only downside was the fact that you had to park your car in a multi storey car park but this was only just over the road.
I would stay there again if the price at that time was right and would look again for a breakfast included rate if possible

very chicke

A hotel with a differance i`d say !!
Should be a five star hotel and not a four.
Everything at the hotel was spottless, even the loos flushed themselves.
The overall design of the hotel was fantastic in my opinion, every little detail was thought about.
The staff were pleasant enough, apart maybe from the girl who took you to your table at breakfast, rather snooty i thought and could have welcomed the guests with a bit more tact.
Location was ideal for whatever you wanted.
Will go back for sure !!!

Beware - Another missing reservation

from Mstoast
Having read the review relating to the stay over the Powergen semis, I felt I had to add to this. We booked this hotel on 3rd December 2005 - more than 4 months in advance - through a 3rd party operator, admittedly at a very good rate. We received confirmation from them, and brought the paperwork with us to the hotel. Surprise, surprise - there was no record of our booking.
The staff were very polite and did try and help us out, but as the hotel was fully booked, there was no room available to us. We had to go to another hotel (paid for by the Park Plaza) and it was terrible. We paid to stay at a new boutique type hotel, but instead were fobbed off into a dated, disgusting hotel. I have no doubt that this hotel looks fantastic, but please beware their reservations system - it appears to have let a few people down.

Not too impressed

I stayed at the Cardiff Park Plaza with my boyfriend for his birthday, and paid around £100 to stay one night. The hotel did not meet our expectations of a 4* hotel. The room was small and basic and the bathroom hardly had room to move around in. When we came back from our night out, the man on the front desk accused my boyfriend of bringing a random girl (me) back to his room for the night. We had our evening meal at the hotel restaurant, and again, were very disappointed. The risotto was not pleasant, and the buffallo motzarella salad was tasteless. Although the lobby was very attractive to look at, and staff were helpfull, our experience of this hotel left us not wanting more.

Take your reservation details

Watch out. I have just returned having stayed at the hotel over the Rugby Powergen Cup semi final weekend (being staged at the Millennium Stadium).

On check in, we were assigned a smoking room. When I advised that I had booked a non smoking room, I was told that I had not. I only had my reservation number, not the full confirmation number. The hotel was full, so we had little option but to accept the room, only to find out it was a wheelchair access room. After much discussion, we were eventually re-allocated a room.

My father also had the same issue with his room with regards to the smoking issue.

Apart from that, the hotel was OK, but I feel they are sneaky with reservations if the hotel gets full.

Oh, and Bath Rugby lost, which further added to my anguish!

Understated luxury

Stayed here for the weekend with my husband in early Feb and it was a very pleasant experience. Decoration is calming and luxurious throughout, with the lobby particularly striking. Rooms very spacious and bed immensely comfortable. Only negative was breakfast, which was only ok, particularly for non meat eaters. Breakfast staff were also unfriendly, particularly the maitre d, who turned away from guests before they had finished addressing her. Apart from that though, a very pleasant stay.

Nice place

Stayed here for a weekend break in March 2005 with the other half. Its a really nice hotel, shame the leisure facilities weren't up and running when we visited but the hotel itself is really nice and the decor in the bedrooms made everything great. I couldn't complain about the size of rooms like others have here - thought it was fine. Brilliant location - close to shops, bars and the castle. Get little noise from outside. Breakfast was okay - nothing special. Quite expensive compared to the normal sorts of hotels we go in but if you don't like the price you don't go do you?

Great hotel, small rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very nice hotel, lovely reception area, and bar was very comfortable and relaxing, despite being a little hard to find due to lack of signage!

Check in very easy, and able to check in 2 hours earlier than should have.

Room was lovely, although smaller than i would have expected for such a nice new hotel. Decor was very pleasing, and bathroom very clean and tidy.

TV had good selection of channels, and good facilities for tea/coffee etc.

Room had internal views of the hotel which was disappointing, as it made the room quite dingy.

Bed was extremelely comfortable, and the duvet was divine.

Check out again very speedy, car park was opposite hotel, and had slight reduction in price via hotel, although machine was not working, and took us around 30 mins to sort the ticket out.

Great location, although a little tricky to find, as tucked behind the main roads! Literally a stones throw from the shops/pubs/castle, but not too close for comfort.

All in all, a nice hotel, lovely for staying a few nights in, but would probably not stay there if wanting an indulgent special weekend.

Price was £72 without breakfast, have stayed elsewhere in Cardiff and had what i feel to be better value for money.

Good, but not great...

from Strawberryvic
My partner and I were really looking forward to a special, romantic night (we chose the hotel based on the excellent reviews) and were a little disappointed. We paid £135 for a junior suite (little more than a larger room, although it did have nice touches like bath robes). On check-in (at 2.15) I was told the room was not ready and check-in wasn't until 2pm - I reminded the lady on the desk that it was gone 2pm already, and it was only then that she checked with housekeeping. Once in the room, we couldn't open the mini-bar or switch on the TV so we called the desk who sorted it out, but I can't understand why there isn't any info in the room about what to do. Later on I asked if we needed to make a reservation for dinner in the restaurant, and I was told it was fully booked - I hadn't even been asked about dinner when I checked-in and so we were very disappointed. Front desk made some calls to find us a table somewhere else but that's not the point. When we came back to the room at 11.05 that night, we called room service for champagne and desserts. They said that after 11pm they only did "ham sandwiches and chips". I pointed out it was only 5 past 11 so they relented, but (again) there was no info anywhere in the room to say what time you could order room service food. Breakfast was nice but nothing special, the tables were squeezed together so you could hear everyone's conversations and there was irritating music being played. Not much atmosphere in the dining room compared to other hotels I've stayed at. I think this hotel is a bit hyped-up, and although it is nice and the decor is pleasant and relaxing, I can't see what the fuss is about.
