Lovely stay at the Novotel

from aust2005
I stayed one night at the Novotel recently on a business trip.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the centre of Cardiff so quite handy. Unfortunately I didn't get time to explore the bay or much of Cardiff itself so cannot comment on those.

The Novotel itself has been newly refurbished. My room was on the third floor and was lovely. Newly refurbished in a contemporary style and very clean. It had a safe, ironing board and iron, hairdryer, TV with some satellite channels and pay per view films and a minibar with the usual extortionate prcies. The bathroom had a quite powerful shower over a bath and was also very clean and newly decorated. The only qualm I had with my room was that with the window open the traffic from the street below was fairly noisy althought there was some sort of climate control in the room for heating/cooling.

I ate at the restaurant during my stay. It is being refurbished at the moment so had to walk through a bit of building work to get there but it looks like it won't be too long before it is finished. The food was lovely. You could choose what size portions you wanted (taster/starter/main) for however many dishes you wanted in whatever order. I had two starter size dishes which were plenty but you could order several "taster" size dishes to create a tapas type meal if you wished. I thought this was a great concept and wish more restauants would adapt it! My food was very nice and well presented as was the lovely raspberry mousse dessert! I believe that you can order from the main menu for room service up to around 9pm which gives a greater choice than the usual room service menus you get. The breakfast was the standard cooked breakfast fayre which was OK but I thought very overpriced at £11.

The staff were generally very friendly at reception and the restaurant. The reception area is very pleasent with internet access, for a charge, a playstation and glass lifts to the rooms. There is a leisure club and pool for use for free if you are staying at the hotel. Unfortunately I didn't get time to sample this but the pool looks lovely from pictures of it.

Overall, I'm glad I paid £75 to stay at this hotel rather than pay a little bit less to stay at a Travelodge or similar. I felt I got a little bit more luxury for my money and it made for a pleasant stay.

Great location: but get the prices right

Cardiff is lovely and the refurbished rooms at the Novotel are also great. The hotel has a pool and gym. I paid GBP 55 when I purhased online ta but I saw rates at the hotel about GBP 110++ so make sure you get a good deal, esle other hotels (Holiday INN) may be better

Location is very good, 10 minute walk (2 minute cab ride) from the Mermaid Quay (Cardiff Bay) and mayeb 5 minute walk from city center (High Street and St Marys Avenue)

So yes its a good hotel, great staff, newly redone, and well located; but as always the price has to be right ....

Wait till it is refurbished....

We have just spent 2 nights at this hotel - got a great deal of £110 through LastMinute. I thought I might have needed to change the booking and although it was non-refundable the hotel were very helpful and offered to re-arrange to a weekend of my choice for the same price.

The hotel is easy to find and is in a central location - easy walking distance to the city centre and Cardiff Bay. The hotel is in the middle of renovations so isn't looking as good as it will in the future and the car park is relatively small. Someone who was staying at the hotel couldn't find a space in the car park so parked on the road and had their window smashed. We had no problems but be careful not to leave valuables in your car.

Our room was clean with a double bed, sofa and dressing table, the bathroom was OK too - nothing special but fine for a couple of nights.

The staff on reception were really friendly and the leisure centre looked good. Unfortunately we forgot our stuff but if I was to return I would want to use the facilities.

I would return to this hotel - especially once all the renovations have been finished.

Lovely Hotel In Cardiff

from Leah82
I stayed at the Novotel Cardiff with my boyfriend, for one night - 18th February for a valentines break!
We had travelled by car from Southampton, a journey which took 3 hours, so we were very pleased when we arrived at the hotel at just after 12pm that they let us check in early (check in time 2pm)
We then had time to unpack and relax before we had booked a millenium stadium tour at 4pm.
The hotel is very nice, modern and lovely decor. The swimming pool, gym, jacuzzi etc were available free to all guests, we were so disappointed we didnt bring our swimming costumes!!!
The room was large and very nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable, king size and with no itchy sheets you find in other hotels!
The bathroom was large too, had bath and seperate shower cubicle!
The hotel is located close to town centre, we walked to the stadium in under 10 minutes and was very easy to find too!
We found the staff extremely nice and helpful.
Would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to stay in Cardiff.

On the way up

We stayed in this hotel for two nights to celebrate our engagement. It's a nice hotel that is undergoing refurbishment - but other than the scaffolding it's not noticeable. The hotel rooms are typical of most hotels but have a nice decor. The hotel has a good sized swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jaccuzzi and small gym facilities (but full of good quality equipment) - which is free to use. The large buffet style breakfast is again typical of most hotels.
The hotel is located just outside the inner City centre but is well within walking distance (5-10mins?). Cardiff Bay is about 15 minutes walk away or a short drive.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, especially when the refurbishments have been completed.

We stayed at this hotel to celebrate our five year engagement anniversary. How anyone could say the staff are rude is something I will never understand. On arrival, we were greeted with a big smile from the gentleman on reception who was very polite and happy. The staff there are so kind, they had neatly arranged a happy anniversary card, chocolates and a bottle of red wine with two glasses, free of charge, at our room!!!! The room was very modern, clean & contempary I'd recommend this hotel to everyone. It absolutely fab!!!

Excellent hotel for city break

from Super_Mazza
Firstly, I have to admit that we did not stay at this hotel through choice! It was one of a handful of hotels that weren't booked for the weekend we were staying there to see a concert at the Millenium Stadium. However, we were very pleased that it was available as we had a fabulous stay.

I was worried about the hotel being a building site as I had heard they were being "refurbished" but this wasn't a problem during our stay. The old side of the building is being done up and will probably be pretty spectacular when finished. The reception is very welcoming and the staff very helpful. We were 2 hours early for check in but they still showed us to a room!

Our room was very nice, beautifully decorated in a modern style and with all the usual mod-cons. We liked the addition of a safe in the room. Only disappointment was the noise as we were situated at the front of the hotel but this is the price you pay to be so close to the city centre (10 min walk).

Breakfast was excellent and dinner in the bar was also very good. The leisure facilities looked good but we didn't have chance to sample them. Car parking is plenty and is behind the hotel with its own security.

Overall, the hotel is quite pricey but we can not fault them on anything else.

Great Staff

Stayed here for two nights midweek. Stayed in a double room in the new wing. Room had everything you need. Mini-bar,iron and ironing board, hairdryer, safe, internet access and a sofa. Bathroom was good.Nice powerful shower. So powerful the shower screen couldn't cope and leaked quite a bit. Staff very friendly as you'd expect in Wales. Leisure facilities good. Location excellent if a little bit noisy early morning depending on which side your on. Overall, very good. Definitely stay again.

Excellent Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Before going to Cardiff last weekend, I was rather alarmed to read many of the negative reviews posted here. Our experience couldn't have been more different. Efficient, friendly staff; clean, modern ("Classic") room in the new wing; very reasonable evening meal in the bar; superb breakfast. The old wing is currently undergoing some refurbishment - this is clearly aiming to provide good facilities while maintaining lots of character features. While this is not the cheapest hotel in Cardiff, it is very conveniently situated, has loads of parking and offers, in my opinion, good value for money.

Shabby and disappointing

from Ben-and-Beth
My wife and a couple of friends went to see U2 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in June 2005.

Our firend booked two double rooms well in advance. We were aware of the general quality of Novotel's, and felt that we were booking a reliable, quality - if not luxurious - hotel. However when we arrived and tried to book in, we had to wait for over an hour for the rooms to be ready. Then when they were eventually ready we were told that we had two single rooms booked. We had booked two double rooms. We explained this to the hotel staff and they kept telling us that we had booked two single rooms. Eventually they gave us two single rooms and a twin room. This was not ideal, but we had no option. We went to our rooms, through the very contemporary and rather plush reception, in the modern glass lift and then along the narrow dark corridor. The rooms that we were allocated were clearly not up to the standard that we were expecting. They were more like a run down B&B. The rooms were dirty and had not been redecorated for probably ten years. There was blood on the sink in one room, dangerous wiring in a heater and the trouser press was falling off the wall. We ended up not staying in the hotel, but instead checking out after the concert and driving home. They still tried to charge us for the room. Would suggest that you can find much better cheaper hotels in Cardiff.
