Very comfortable for families
from MelfynI booked online through the hotel's website - an experience that was less than satisfactory as I was given conflicting information about availability depending on which links on the site I clicked on! Then when I finally booked the site froze, leaving me uncertain as to whether the booking had gone through or not. I phoned the hotel the next day and they confirmed the booking on their system and also gave me a reference number for my peace of mind!
Although I know Cardiff pretty well, I wasn't exactly sure where the hotel was situated. But it's quite easy to find, sharing an entrance with the Red Dragon Centre (the large UCI Cinema complex which also has a nightclub, a casino, ten-pin bowling and restaurants etc). This is just a five minute walk from the hotel itself, past a Pizza Hut and over a largish car park.
Reception was welcoming and modern, and you can see right into Thomas, the hotel's restaurant. The staff were efficient and friendly.
Travelling as a family on a half-business/half-pleasure trip, we were very impressed with our room. Modern, clean and quite spacious, even though there were two good-sized double beds. But the clincher was the television / entertainment centre (basically a computer monitor which allows you access to most Freeview channels, some pay-tv options, internet access and a good selection of music). Bathroom was all you could wish for, and the beds were very comfortable.
Breakfast on both mornings of our stay was very good. The usual hotel fare, but the standard was very good. First morning was very quiet and the second was very busy - but they coped with both situations painlessly.
Overall, I'd recommend the Cardiff Bay Future Inn to almost anyone. No it's not the city centre, but it's within walking distance to a great entertainment centre and all the attractions of Cardiff Bay are within reach too. I would only expect higher standards at much more expensive hotels such as the Hilton or St David's Hotel and Spa.
Good with a few buts
from A TripAdvisor MemberVery Good
from A TripAdvisor MemberLocation - little quirky as not that obvious but staff directed me in when I phoned up (as I had stupidly left my map of the hotel at home!)and couldn't have been more helpful. It is just off the city centre but taxis only cost £5 into the city centre.
Breakfast - good quality and again excellent value at £7.50 a head for as much as you want (full english, cereal, etc).
One Bad Point - when I called to confirm my internet booking a week before I arrived they couldn't find my booking initially, so do check before you arrive and take a print out.
Overall - would happily stay again.
Decent value
from bax52Its a decent enough hotel. Good sized rooms, two big beds and clean and very comfortable. Just struck me as a little bland and in a non descript area with nothing to do, yet too far to walk to the centre. The decor is also a little bland and uninspiring. It seems mid way between a Travelodge type place and a bigger 4 star chain.
Checking out in the morning was a joke. Long long queues so didnt even bother as room had been prepaid.
Clean, modern, spacious and good value
from sqwawkWhy not 5 stars? This is basically down to the location rather than the hotel itself. The hotel is out in Cardiff Bay which is not an easy walk into town, given the busy road, construction works around and good distance. The taxi will cost around £6 to get you into the town centre.
Modern, luxury hotel at a reasonable price
from njpollardWhile the reception and bar area are nothing out of the ordinary, the rooms are easily as good as any of the 4-star hotels I've stayed in. Our very tastefully decorated room had two double beds with white duvets, a modern bathroom with a bath and power-shower, the usual tea & coffee facilities, plus an LCD TV and internet terminal.
The only downside is that the hotel is located on a retail park between the city centre and Cardiff Bay, but the duel carriageway makes it diffifcult to walk to either, so you'll need to drive or get a taxi if you're planning to go out.
Overall, for the price, this has got to be one of the best hotels I've stayed in.
Vaue at Future Inn
from cyfreithwrClean, spacious, modern, comfortable... highly recommended.
from A TripAdvisor MemberCouldnt ask for more!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberFriendly and chaty staff. The rooms were very large, a queen size bed and a sofa and it wasnt cramped. The bathroom was great, lovely hot power shower. The bed firm and comfortable. The rooms facilities, fantastic!! Free internet, a DVD player, loads of tv channels and music stored on a hard drive all played through a great sound system and on a LCD screen. Couldnt fault it, and it was a good deal as well.
Only slight problem was the view from our window, not great but its a city and the hotel is very close to the docks, but it didnt bother us, we didnt spend hours looking out the window :)
Overall I couldnt fault it, would go there again in a heartbeat!!
no more 24 hour room service
from welshtazThe rooms are spacious and clean, great beds (having been to Canada many times they have the most comfortable beds) and the staff are very friendly. I think that the hotel should not advertise that they have vending machines on each floor because they do not (apparently a vending machine is available in the exercise room and guest laundry room, but did not check this out). Our main dissapointment was that they offered 24 hour room service the last time we stayed so was very disappointed when returning to the hotel to find out this now finishes at 11.00 pm. We could have drinks delivered to the room 24 hours a day, but could not get even a sandwich.
Will definately return to this hotel, but will make sure that we eat at one of the resturants at the bay before returning to the hotel.
Top Local Tips for Cardiff
Dr Who exhibition Your wristband is valid for all day entry, so go in the morning, then again in the evening when it is much quieter.
Millenium Stadium I can only write about the Millenium Stadium, 'cos that is the only place we went. Well, what can I say? It's huge & very spectacular, well organised, helfull staff.
Use the Park and Ride on the Weekend The Park and Ride is on bus payment of £3 for a return ticket per vehicle. The journey into the centre takes about 15 minutes and you leave the bus at the Queen Street Station end of the High Street so you are on the flat to walk past all the shopping facilities as you head down towards the Castle. Buses run approximately every 15 minutes with the last bus at around 6pm. The pick up place is exactly the same bus stop.
