Perfect for touring artists!

from jontheron
I stayed at the eTaps in Cardiff and Birmingham during a recent tour of Wales and the UK with a traveling theatre company over from Montreal. The place was clean, accessible, had free wi-fi in the lobby and totally helped us save on per diems!

Great for those on a tight budget

from TweetyPie
I booked the room because I wanted the cheapest room in Cardiff with free parking. I paid £35 for a standard room, which had a double bed (and a bunk cleverly placed across the top!).

The hotel is easy to find and very close to the centre. The staff were polite, friendly and efficient.

The room was as shown on other travellers' photos - although cold, plain and basic it had everything I needed , although I did miss not having Tea/Coffee facilities in the room, especially as I arrived late and didn't want to go back downstairs. The small TV had the main channels.

The matress (I think there was one!) was extremely firm, like sleeping on a block of wood, which didn't particularly bother me but be warned. For one night it was fine. No worse than a student's room in halls. I didn't find it particularly small but I can't imagine more than 2 people in there. The shower cubicle I had was a very good size, I had no problem with the sink being in the room but the toilet was a bit claustrophobic.

The room was clean but the white walls had quite a few scuffs and marks on it. I didn't experience any noise except the constant dull hum of the hotel's heating system.

Overall the stay was good value and I would stay again if on a tight budget. I've paid more to stay in much grottier places (a couple of the B&Bs on Cathedral Road qualify!)

Oh my god never again.......

Good Points: Price and Location.
Bad Points: Car Park too small, room too small, toilet /shower too small, bed too hard (like sleeping on a concrete slab)

Will I be back? Never in a month of Sundays.

Good hotel for the price

With incredibly cheap prices, this is an good hotel for those on a very tight budget.

Close to the city centre, no problem with parking, noisy, but only to expected on a Friday and Saturday night. Ideal for couples/younger people, on shopping/entertainment breaks. Not great for children.

Room, although small (especially the WC) was clean and well presented, and although the layout is unusual, we did not find this a problem.

The only issue we had was with breakfast. The eating area is very small and breakfast time was very hectic and busy - more a case of grab, eat and run than sit, eat and relax.

I can only say that you get what you pay for - it was better than many B&B's we have stayed in. Those wanting 4* treatment should stay away. We would definitely stay in an Etap hotel again.

Loud, dirty, small

from Etap_guest
I know it's cheap, and it is central, but I've stayed there a number of times and my soul is curdling at the prospect of going again.

1. It's very, very noisy - I've yet to stay a night when there haven't been marauding groups of drunks making as much noise as they can in neighbouring rooms or the corridor.

2. It's dirty - stains on the bed linen, dirty toilets and floor, etc. Walls are filthy.

3. It's tiny - OK, you knew this, but you have to stay there to know just how cramped it is.

4. Parking - you may not get a parking space. The car park is free but it's small and crowded. I was told to park outside and get up early to feed the meter. And you do need to do this as one of the delights at breakfast is watching the parking wardens patrol outside.

5. Breakfast - approx £3 - terrible. Bowl of cornflakes, some bread to toast and an apple. Vending machine drinks and some stale croissants. It's eat as much as you like, but given what's on offer, that's not much. Also prepared in filthy conditions.

6. But the most annoying thing is they don't make the bed on the top bunk. The sheet is left on top of the naked mattress and you have to put it on yourself. Not only are you supposed to do this while perched on top of the bunk itself, but if you try to tuck the sheet under the mattress on the side by the wall, you risk shredding your knuckles because the finish on the walls is some kind of razor-sharp artex. So the best that can be achieved is a roughly tucked in mess. Nightmare.

Look, I stay there because I'm on a very tight budget, but if I had any choice at all I would go elsewhere. My advice to you is to do the same.

Bon voyage!

Cheap, bizarre hotel

from t-badger
Booked the room because of the price- £32 gets you a room in central cardiff with free parking, which is fantastic, leaving my hard earned cash free to spend on the many delights cardiff offers!
The room won't be to everyones taste. It's very small, doesn't have a proper bathroom (you get a tiny toilet room and a shower cubicle). The wash basin is in the main room, so you have to wash/dry yourself in the main room with no privacy. And there's a bunk bed above the main bed- i think this is a feature in all the rooms, and certainly takes some getting used to, giving the place thwe feel of a youth hostel.
The beds are very firm, which i liked but again perhaps not to everyones taste. No kettle in the room, but the hotel has a shop and drinks machine available 24/7, reasonably priced. Flat screen TV with some satalite channels.
Hotel is a 5 minute walk to main shopping area. I would say it is great value, but if you want a bit of luxury, it's not the best choice.

Cheap and uncomfortable

from A TripAdvisor Member
OK, it's a budget hotel and you don't expect too many frills. The staff are very helpful, the room is very clean, but it is so small and the bed is so hard it's impossible to get a decent sleep. With a tiny shower cubilcle, really small toilet area and wash basin in the room don't expect too much privacy. The breakfast is great value for money, but I would prefer to spend a bit more on the room for a decent night's sleep. Will try somewhere else next time

Superb Staff

from wyeboy10
These hotels are just arriving in U.K. Value for money ,they are amazing. For my wife and myself the bill for 1 night was £37.90 which included breakfast and all taxes. It was basic , clean comfortable and very functional. The breakfast was continental all you could eat ,tea and coffee free all day and night. The staff were well trained pleasant and very helpful ,first class. It was fairly new and can imagine with time it could get scuffy easily. but I would hope that it will be well maintained.

Excellent Weekend

from Irishfan72
A group of us have just returned home after spending a great weekend in Cardiff for a football match and staying in the Etap hotel. We were pleasently surprised at the accomodation after reading some of the reviews and the price we had paid for it. But must admit we could not fault it. The staff were very friendly, the room was clean and tidy and the hotel is very centrally located for the city centre, about a ten minute walk, at most. Each of the days the room was cleaned, the beds made and new towels left. The only thing I can't comment on is the food as we were never out of bed in time for breakfast which ended at 10 am, but there are vending machines and fridges at reception where you can buy tea, coffee, sandwiches, soup etc and also the T.V. does work without the remote. The only thing I would suggest is that when booking a room, unless you are on a very, very strict budget, book only two people per room, although there is a double bed and a bunk over it and it could cater for three, as the rooms are compact enough with the handbasin in the room and a seperate shower and toilet cubicle.(You also can't be shy or modest about changing in front of someone) But it was ideal for what we wanted it for, somewhere to put our heads down after a night out on the town! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would have no problem returning there, would highly recommend it for groups of lads on a night out or a stag as they seem to have no problem with this where other hotels frown on it.

great place to stay

from cockneyWales
Just arrived home after overnight stay in Etap Cardiff. Stayed with friends and went to a show in CIA. Very impressed with close proximity to city centre. Hotel rooms are basic, but have all you need, very clean and staff were very helpful. What do you expect for £32 per room. Will definately return to this Hotel. It was my husbands 50th birthday, so no prizes for guessing our ages. About time other Hotel Companies stopped ripping guests off. Well done Etap!
