Stay Away from this hotel

This was my first and probably my only trip to Wales. I was looking forward to it and the hotel pictures looked great. I was checked into a room in the basement. Although a good size, the room was old, musty, dusty and dirty. The mattress on the bed was caved in. The pilows were the flattest poor quality pillows I have ever seen. I did not even want to use the bathtub. I asked the front desk if this hotel was indeed a 4 star hotel and they replied yes. In all my travels and a career for many years in the hospitality industry, this hotel would be lucky to be rated a 2 star.

I called Expedia and ended up leaving the hotel 3 days earlier than planned.

I travelled by train and if you don't have a car, it cost 30 pounds, or
approx. 70 Canadian dollars to take a taxi/cab from the hotel to
the downtown core and back again.

On a positive note, the hotel grounds are quite nice, there is a large Marks and Spencer across the street, Tesco, grocery store, fast food places like McDonalds, Burger King and Pizza Hut within a 5 minute walk.

Last Minute Booking Nowhere Else Available But...

My husband and I won tickets at the last minute to the Ireland - Wales 6 nations rugby match. We spent 3 days searching for hotel and this was all that was left. i would have preferred to be in Cardiff but we had no choice. However, the checking in was easy and staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and well equipped. My only complaint would eb that the shower coudl not be adjusted and although I love power showers this one nearly beat you to death with the force of the pressure and soaked the bathroom. Breakfast was good, loads of choice, again helpful staff who were attentive, the food was really nice, lots of fresh fruit but the coffee was awful - very bitter, as if it was the last dregs from the pot. The hotel is in need of some refurbishment, parts are a bit shabby but all in all it was not an unpleasant stay. The picture of the hotel and lake looks nice but does not show that you are on a very busy road opposite Burget King, Pizza Hut etc, but we did not get any excessive noise. Although the hotel is out of town, only 4 miles, its easy accessible and there is a coach/mini bus from the hotel to Cardiff and back for £5 per head each way. If only two of you its cheaper than a cab. It is a bit expensive but isn't everywhere over priced these days.

Theft warning

My husband and I stayed for a company dinner held on the premises. We were given a smoking room although non smoking was requested at the time of booking 6 months earlier. They advised that they do say that this cannot be guaranteed! I could not have stayed in a room smelling of smoke. Fortunately this was not the case so we accepted it. Out toilet seat was dirty on our arrival so I had to get room service in to clean it which they promptly did. Whilst we attended the dinner (excellent food), £60 was taken from my purse left in our locked room. I only discovered the theft in the morning on waking. I reported this to reception and the only response was "I'm so sorry about that"! I would have at least expected to have completed a form providing the details so it could have been properly investigated but no interest was shown. Wholly unsatisfactory in my view. Be warned!

Has potential

This hotel could be great, but is looking very tired, needs a re-furb! I did not have to pay for the room as the stay was complimentary, but at over £100 per night, the hotel is very over priced. Hotel is easily accessible from the motorway and is a short drive into the city centre. Lovely lake surrounds the hotel.
Breakfast is ver expensive- £15 each. Decided not to take that and had a fantastic breakfast at Tesco for £4!! It's a 2 minute walk from the hotel.

Dirty Rooms, Poor Service

I have stayed here many times but the hotel has gone downhill. Rooms are dark, dirty and musty, cigarette burns in the bedcover. I was served raw cold food by room servcie not the first time I may add. Took forever to place the order then waited ages. Breakfast Tea and toast always takes ages to come even when not busy. The check in staff are friendly and helpful. This hotel could be much better.

I stayed in this hotel as part of a golfing group. All the staff were really pleasant and helpful - especially Maitre D - Luis. The food was superb and the breakfast great. The weather was warm but not stifling so rooms were fine. Like most 4-5 star hotels in UK the bar prices and the rack rates are ridiculously expensive - just ensure you get a sensible room rate via the internet or an agent.
Overall my stay here was excellent.

Avoid it!!

I stayed here this week for 3 nights and have to agree with the majority of people who have posted this hotel - the hotel is desperate need of refurbishment, carpets and wood work are showing that they are "well worn"!

The Room - well it's like being in a Sauna most of the time, I had the window open and the fan that is supplied by the hotel on 24hrs a day and still found it hard to sleep!

Staff - well they are all foreign, but still friendly enough!

I did have a major complaint, at 0830 one morning I was woken by the loudest drilling sound you have ever heard, the room and everything in it was shaking - I called reception and they said 4 seperate times that the work would be comopleted in 20 mins and that there would be no need to change rooms - I am Cabin Crew and had returned to the hotel after a night flightso had only been in bed for just over 2 hrs! Needless to say the work carried on til well in to the afternoon until it was time for me to get ready to return to work! I complaned to the Manager and he said whilst he undetstood my arguement it was "essential in-house maintenance" and this could not be avoided? i ask myself, knowing I'm Cabin Crew and that we work the strangest of housrs, why have I been allocted a room that is vitually next door to the "essnetial Mainntenance work"?

Anyway the compensation was a free meal and drink - not the best of things when you have had hardly no sleep!

I would avoid this hotel if you can, it cleary does not live up the Copthorne standars and is in desperate need of refurbishement!

My husband and i stayed here for 3 nights over a bank holiday weekend at a charge of £530 excluding breakfast, which they charged £15.95 each which wasnt that good and we had to ask the waiter to clear a table for us so we could sit down. We got a lovely room overlooking the pond it was comfortable and clean, but it was a really warm weekend and the room was like a sauna the window wouldnt open more than 6 inches. i did complain too the reception about it and got a apology letter when i returned. The hotel was miles from anywere and there wasnt even anywere locally to just have a nice walk too. We had to taxi everywere and the taxi to Cardiff bay which incidently has some great restaurants and bars was £10 each way.The bar area was nice and comfortable. We had a pleasant weekend but left feeling that we didnt get vaue for money. I would stay there again but i certainly wouldnt pay the price we did.

Terrible Terrible Terrible !

What an unpleasant hotel. There has been little or no updating of this establishment since it opened many years ago. Very drab, dated decor, dirty rooms and worn out old brown blankets on the beds - yuk ! and how often are they laundered I wonder. The bathroom ventilation system did not work on the 2 occasions I stayed there and mold was growing on the ceiling as a result. A disgusting shower curtain that had neither been washed or replaced in years and more black mold growing around the bath and in the grout....and this in one of there so called 'Connoisseur' rooms. The breakfast buffet was luke warm, a little bit like the welcome received from The female General Manager. The hotel is situated miles from anywhere (6 miles into town and 7 miles from the airport). Who on Earth recommends this hotel ???? It's a dive avoid at all costs.

Terrible price for a terrible hotel

I have numerous complaints about this hotel. Firstly the price. They charged £100 pppn bed & breakfast and oh what a waste of money!
The disaster started from check-in where the staff started to check myself and my collegue in and then preceded to ignore us both while they answered the phone. They then gave us room keys that didnt work, so we had to return to the desk to get them validated. The rooms were in desperate need of refurbishment. They were cold with no facility to alter the temperature. The bathroom was dirty and the shower was so awful that I couldnt wash the shampoo out of my hair properly, I had to go to the leisure club. The food was overpriced and the service left a lot to be desired. They advertised a facility of digital TV however this was not working. I rang down to reception but they said the facility was temporarily unavailable!
Breakfast was the worst experience ever. There was no fruit juice left and we had finished our breakfast by the time we got offered tea and toast and even then we had to prompt the staff to serve us. The cooked items were also rubbery and there was little left by 8:30am.
Upon checkout I was asked if I had a nice stay, I told them not really as my room was freezing and the shower wasnt up to much, the reception staff responded with a shrug of the shoulders as if they had heard it all before!!!
I wouldnt stay here again even if it was free... I have since had a letter from the hotel apologising for the facilities and thanking me for the feedback, but nothing else.

Top Local Tips for Cardiff

Chinese Buffet There was a good buffet Chinese restaurant downtown. I can't remember the name but the price was very reasonable. Also the cinema or movie theater the Vue I believe the name in very near the train station was big and great place to see movies. On Tuesdays, special price of only 3.50 pounds.

Copthorne Hotel Dinner Theatre Go see the dinner theatre at the Copthorne Cardiff!! Fantastic night out with great food and a fab show!!

Bilingual Road Signs Whilst I generally support the emphasis on preserving Welsh language and culture, it can make driving around a pain. Travelling back to Cardiff, I was often nonplussed to find the road sign showing Newport when I wanted Cardiff. I was on the right road of course (Cardiff being reached earlier than Newport), but if the space taken by the Welsh translation of Newport had been omitted it could have been used to display Cardiff as well and thereby avoided causing some misunderstanding.
