I stayed in this hotel about ten years ago and had fond memories. I was disappointed to find that it doesn't appear to have had a scrap of paint applied in the intervening years. It was really quite sad to see such a splendid old hotel slip into neglect. On a more positive note, the staff was helpful and courteous and I enjoyed a very good dinner in the restaurant - which has been re-furbished.

Top Local Tips for St. Andrews
Eating Out Avoid 'The Eating Place' - a small restaurant/cafe in the centre of St Andrews. The waitresses charge for food that you don't eat (sent back a chilli burger that had mayonnaise in it - is this normal?!?!) and then they argue with you when you query the fact that you never ate it and refuse to deduct it from your bill!! Prior to asking for the bill, a replacement was offered, minus the mayonnaise of course, but declined - does this mean they would have charged you for two if you had accepted their offer of a replacement?!?!?! Not only this, but the portions are measly - you wouldn't need to be starving! A good place to eat is the Grill House on the other side of town (mexican/steaks etc) - staff very friendly, service good and food excellent!
