Outstanding views shame about the rooms

The entrance of the hotel and the grounds are absolutely outstanding but once inside the hotel starts to look a bit shabby - admittedly this adds to the character to a certain extent, for example the log fires etc (only problem with this is they are a bit overbearing at times) - we booked into a turret suite which we thought would be extra special but we unfortunately got the one which had not been refurbished and it was extremely dated ... staff were very friendly throughout especially in the restaurant and made our stay memorable ... grounds were gorgeous and the visit was worth it to take in the dramatic views ... extremely overpriced for what we got though - they tried to charge us £320 for a one night stay with sparking wine and chocolates (4 of) on arrival - definitely not worth it - would have bought my own if i had known it was going to cost me a couple of hundred quid !!!

Leisure facilities were fantastic - swimming pool was gorgeous as was the jacuzzi - if they manage to get the accommodation sorted it would be a magnificent hotel (again !!!)

I booked the Atholl Palace Hotel for a night's break in November. It looked fantastic on the website - and the building looks amazing - was quite excited coming up the driveway. That all changed when I saw the rooms. The lobby area was lovely as was the bar, but he dining room was very dated, and the bedrooms appalling - no where near 4* standard at all!
The food was abysmal - very poor quality - for dessert I received what I would class as supermarket "saver" brand creme caramel. Definitely not worth it at all. The redeeming factor of the meal was the wine. When in the bar for a couple of drinks after the meal, tables were left uncleared, with dirty glasses and overflowing ashtrays.
Would definitely not reccomend this hotel at all.

Having read a few negative comments I thought I'd add my own thoughts. Breathtaking views, lovely new swimming / sauna facilities etc and varied food on the dinner bed and breakfast package. Food of the highest quality, the staff could not have been friendlier. The hotel is not the most modern although it adds to the feel of the place. Special mention for the Maitre D who went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. We both had a cracking time and my girlfriend is quite fussy about the standard of accomodation she stays in.

I got married at the Atholl Palace in April 2004 and found everything to be excellent. Our guests were well catered for, the staff couldnt have been more helpful and friendly and assisted with care of small children through our meal. The rooms were all spotless and comfortable and breakfast was a full feast - I unfortunately missed this as was on the way to the airport for my honeymoon!!! For someone looking for a stay in a baronial castle with splendour and fabulous grounds it has to be the Atholl Palace!

My wife and I arrived on thursday night (17 march 2005) in preparation for the Barbar Ship Convention. We arrived with some trepidation having read a number of very poor reports on this web site. Well, all I can say is that those other people must have been staying in another Athol Palace Hotel in another Pitlochry!!
From the minute we enterd the hotel the staff were extremeley polite and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble.Having checked in with a "wee Dram" we found the rooms clean and comfortable.
The food was of the highest order, all fresh food and well prepared and excellently served. The Maitre'D was superb nothing seemed to fluster him his young and I would imagine some very experienced staff worked their "socks" off to ensure that everything was just right ( it's worth mentioning that at the height of the rush his staff were catering for 200 excited and boistous singers and followers !!!
We have experienced an absolutley wonderful weekend made that much better by the attentive staff, suroundings and conditions at the Hotel
Thank you one and all for making it so special (p.s. don't forget to try the spa downstairs in the "club")

Having been double booked in another establishment we were sent to the Atholl Palace and we were very glad by the end of the weekend.

From the welcome drink to check out we all thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. The interior of the hotel is very traditional and Scottish but very welcoming and relaxing. The meals in the restaurant were wonderful and the restaurant staff were very pleasant and helpful.

The leisure facilities were also of a high standard. The rooms wre large and roomy and very comfortable.

All in all we rated the hotel very high and hope to return in the future.

Spectacular setting.

Possibly not the biggest room that you will have however that is a small complaint. Took the wife and kids for a birthday weekend and was very happy with my decision. We were given a family suite at the top of the palace which was very homely and furnished to our needs. A wonderful old building which is in spectacular grounds and on your arrival will take your breath away. I have to say that the bar-room, with its log fire, is my most favourite bar in the world with a wonderful aroma filling the air. I could sit in there all day. It is the jewel in Pitlochry's crown. Love the place.

the setting is great, the building is spectacular, the public rooms are wonderful.....but the bedrooms are very very small for a very very high price. We felt like we were being ripped off and it spoiled an otherwise great weekend in a beautiful town.

After reading a number of less than favourable reviews on this site it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I took my family, along with my mother-in-law and my 11 year old son's cousin to this hotel for a two night stay on the 21st of December 2004. Through the course of my occupation I have the good fortune to stay in some of the country's better establishments (at someone else's expense) and I admit to having been just a little suspicious of the low cost!
As one reviewer stated, this hotel is indeed an architectural jewel and the inside certainly had something to live up to. I am pleased to say that this was easily surpassed from the warmth of the welcome to the paying of the bill. The staff were friendly but not intrusive, the food excellent and served with a smile. The pool and leisure facilities were of the highest standard and duly frequented by the children who were also made to feel welcome in all parts of the hotel. The rooms were more than adequate and looked to have been recently refurbished. As for the lounge and entrance areas these were reassuringly decorated in keeping with the overall ancient ambience of the hotel.
Whilst it may not be the Conrad International it does not pretend to be and does what it does very well. I shall certainly be returning in the future (and No, I do not work for the hotel).
I am still suspicious though as to why to it was so reasonably priced!

My wife and I stayed at the Atholl Palace Hotel for one night in December 2004 and it was positively the worst hotel experience we have ever had. The place looks grand from the outside and is undoubtedly an architectural jewel but the service, rooms and decor of the place is atrocious. We were upgraded to one of their tower suites for which the manager gleefully told us she would charge at least £300 in the summer - it's not worth £30 at any time of year. The bed linen was ancient and covered by an old army style, rash inducing blanket. The furniture was equally ancient and hopelessly old fashioned. The hotel staff ranged from woefully untrained, inadequate individuals with only the most basic grasp of the English language to downright rude and obnoxious. The worst part of our stay was having to eat dinner in their overpriced restaurant. The prawn starter was made up of barely defrosted, tiny pre-packaged prawns drowned in mayonnaise and you needed a chain saw to cut the steak which came as a main course. For this culinary crime the Atholl had the gall to charge us £80. If you ever find yourself in Pitlochry and only the Atholl Palace has rooms - sleep in the town car park. You'll be more comfortable.

Walk If you like walking don't miss a trip to the Bruars Falls

Get out!!!!!! This is part of some of the most glorious scenery in the world. Don't overly worry about which bit to see, it's all great and you won't see all of it. Just get up early, eat a hearty breakfast, get a map and some decent walking shoes and get into the countryside. It's truely magnificent.

You have to tour around the Loch Rannoch Tour in car around the lake Rannoch, not far away from pitlochry, it is quite an amazing scenery, you have the feeling to be in another planet. On the way to the loch, dont forget to stop at Queen's view, the best view we've had in Scotland!
