Great location, shame about the service

We stayed here for 2 nights for a weekend break. We got off to a good start when the reception staff said that they had got us booked in in October! The bedroom and bathroom were spacious but the decor needs updating. We stayed half board and the service in the restaurant could have been better - we waited 20 minutes to order our dessert! The dinner menu was OK but it would have been nice to have the choice of a hot pudding. Breakfast was generally good in terms of choice and quality of food. The facilities are excellent - pool, gym, beauty salon, pitch and putt, etc. etc. It is a very large hotel and attracts many elderly clients, which gives it a bit of an old-fashioned air.

Funny thing is that the entrance up a musty set of stairs is by far the worst feature, followed by the reception area. Therefore, don't be put off by first impressions!!!

Relaxing Break

The Peebles Hydro is basically a hotel that provides a wide range of activities for its guests. Many of these activities are sports/health related, but there are also large dining and bar facilities. The hydro also puts on a range of evening activities, e.g. scottish dancing and card playing. Staying in this hotel feels like taking a trip back to a bygone age, and the hydro is probably most suited to the more mature traveller. Guests are required to dress smartly for drinks in the bar and for the evening dinner. The rooms are spacious, clean, and quiet, though the decor is a bit dated. The staff are friendly and helpful, and you can often get special deals on the room rates. The hydro is also within walking distance (15mins) to Peebles town center if you feel like a change of scenery.

I've been going to stay at the hydro every summer for the last 10 years and each year as soon as we drive up to the hotel it feels like we're coming to our second home. The hydro is a typical old-fashioned hotel, with afternoon tea, ballroom, jacket and tie for dinner, but that is all combined with a sense of informality and welcoming that i don't think i've ever experienced at another hotel. The staff are more than willing to go beyond the call of duty when it comes to service - they always address you by your name, if you have a question, they always make it their priority to answer it. I remember one particular incident when a member of my family asked one of the waiters at breakfast if there was any blackcurrant jam...there wasn't, but when we came down the next morning there was a whole jar waiting at our table!What i'm trying to say is that the service is truly personal and nothing is too much to ask. The food is fantastic, sports facilities wonderful...i can't wait to go back!

What can I say?

I spent one night at Peebles this February on my way north to the Cairngorms. This is still my favourite hotel, I have stayed here four times now. The service and food is incredible. If only the rooms were modernised and included things such as mini bars, satellite tv etc., this hotel would surely be ugraded to five star. As it is, I can't believe it has only recently been made four star. The staff all seem intent on one thing - Pampering their guests. No where else have I seen so many staff, all appearing to be happy to serve and more importantly, happy to be there themselves. Twice I have filled in customer comments forms and twice the manager has written back, the letter arriving home before I did! The management team need to be congratulated on the friendly but professional attitude of their staff and the warm and positive energy this creates in the hotel itself. No wonder it is difficult to get a room here, but it is worth the effort.

An excellent hotel

The Hydro is an excellent hotel with aspects of a bygone era still in evidence, eg jacket and tie for males expected at dinner, combined with all that one expects from a modern hotel.

Service is efficient in all areas and there is a high ratio of staff to guests. The dining experience is very good with local products to the fore on the menus. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all very good eating experiences, whether in the dining room or in the bistro restaurant.

I stayed in a suite with my wife and daughter which was both comfortable and spacious although could have done with some repainting and freshening.

The location can hardly be bettered and the views from the front of the hotel are breath taking.

The leisure facilities are also first class and there is a child friendly approach as well.

The hotel charges a rate that is value for money and I am sure that other members would find it a most rewarding place to stay.

Had a great 2 night stay here, everything was excellent. Food, rooms, service, fabulous pool & jacuzzi & some pampering in the beauty salon made it perfect! Cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Excellent Peebles Hydro Hotel

Having just spent 5 nights at the Peebles Hydro Hotel, my wife & I cannot commend it Highly enough. It is rated 4 star, but should be a much higher grading

Having arrived the car park at the front of the Hotel was full, so both thinking the worst, ie there were going to be people & noise all over the place, How wrong we were!

Having made it through the revolving door, and looking at the flight of red carpetted stairs in front of a sense of relaxation & serenity descended on us.

Having booked in (a completey hassle free exercise), we were given a map of the Hotel, trust me this is very useful as the hotel is huge! we went exploring, via the sun lounge, gym, & since it was getting late we had lunch in Lazels restaurant, a big mstake. The food was superb, but with only a couple of hours before dinner I should have curbed my appetite.

We booked dinner for 8pm, so time to change & a drink from the well stocked bar, and sit in the sun lounge to watch the evening pass by.

On entering the dining room and being greeted by name, we were shown to our table, where there was a gentle hum of contentment. The service was superb & the dinner?, mere words can't do justice. 5 courses all freshly cooked & prepared. The staff are friendly & efficient.

Having slept dinner off, it was time for an early start, had to get some swimming & a sauna in before breakfast!

Superb food, excellent Service, Stunning scenery, in fact the only down side of this hotel is that you eventually have to leave, but then again if you didn't you couldn't plan another visit!

This hotel offers a superb location for a truly relaxing break. The service is excellent and I am unable to praise the work of the staff highly enough in all departments, but in particular the restaurant. The attention to detail and friendly personal service given at this hotel is often missing from similar large hotels. I would fully recommend this establishment to anyone looking for peaceful surroundings and easy access to attractions in the area. A car is a must as the drive is long enough for a short walk

Five star treatment from a four star hotel

I have stayed in the Peebles Hydro a few times and have had a hard time in my travels trying to find a hotel to match it. It is the type of hotel you want to spend all your time in. The staff are by far the most friendliest I have encountered taking the care to remember my name each stay. The dining room is extremely elegant with accompanying music at night- even a piper some nights. There is entertainment on a nightly basis- from discos to traditional scottish theme nights in the ball room- there is no way you could ever be lost for something to do with staff and guest matches in the many sportsfields and the daily activities and classes the hotel offers- the views are magnificent, the food and staff are fantastic and the rooms are large and elegant. This is by far one of the best hotels in Britain.

Top Local Tips for Peebles

Glentress Forest Fantastic mountain biking and walking. Eat in The Hub the onsite chalet with fantastic homemade soups, cakes and drinks.

Traquair House - Good to see and make sure you have lunch there If you are near Peebles, worth visiting Traquair House for lunch, its extremely reasonable and very yummy. I had a smoked salmon salad with loads of salmon for around £6.00 and they offered half price childrens sized portions at half price, great for our young son. Unfortunately you do have to pay the entry fee to eat there, so make sure you time your visit to coincide with lunch.

Step Back in Time If you really want to escape from mobile phones (there was no signal on Vodaphone), computers and anything else that bothers you about modern living, then throw caution to the wind and head for the Peebles Hotel Hydro. However, you are allergic to old people, then be warned, this isn't the hotel for you!
