Castle Venlaw was a delightful surprise in the Scottish Borders. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our room was lovely (with a great view), the food was excellent and the staff cordial and very helpful with any question we had about the area. We are planning another trip to Scotland soon and will definitely include a few days at this wonderful hotel.

Fantastic Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have now stayed at Castle Venlaw Hotel on several occasions. Rooms are excelent, setting is superb in its own extensive grounds. There are great views from most parts of the castle. The bar is in a cosy library with real fire. Food in the restaurant is top class. The restaurant itself has a quiet and relaxing feel, and large bay windows give views across the valley. Staff are extremely polite and attentive.

Bordering on sublime

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the moment we drove up to the hotel and saw the panoramic view across the Borders, we had an excellent break at Castle Venlaw. The hotel staff were extremely welcoming and once we were comfortably ensconced in one of the hotels luxury rooms we really were able to unwind.

The library bar was an ideal place to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and select from a wonderful menu. The food more than matched up to our expectations and the service was first class throughout our stay.

Situated in beautiful countryside and only 25 minutes from Edinburgh, we were able to enjoy the best of city/country break. Can't wait to return.

the fabulous castle venlaw

from A TripAdvisor Member
Castle Venlaw in Peebles, Scotland, was the loveliest surprise on our 8 day trip in Scotland. The building was stunning, the accomodations luxurious, the bar comfy and the dining experience spectacular. Every detail was attended to...when we entered our suite, there was a lovely classical CD playing. I would recommend it for weddings, honeymoons, and any special event. Truly the highlight of our trip.

Second enjoyable visit

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having just returned from our second visit to Castle Venlaw and visited this site - We were surprised by some of the adverse comments we came across!
First impressions are important and to find a welcoming face in attendance at reception set the tone for our visits - no need to ring a bell for attention. We had a Four Poster Room with excellent private facilities and our every need was catered for.
Considering the number of guests the staff will meet during the year it was good to be recognised by two who had been in attendance on our first visit.
We live only 55 miles from Peebles and enjoy the countryside and the many places to visit, within easy reach. The shopping in Peebles is traditional and not dominated by chain stores or supermarkets!

beyond disappointed

We honeymooned here last August following a several day stay and our wedding at Cameron House on Loch Lomond. Further, we have travelled Scotland extensively on three separate occasions, and have lots to compare this stay with.

I'll keep this brief, we were totally unsatified with our stay, as well as the owner's reply to my emailed complaint following our return home. He was uncaring, disbelieving, and fixated on defending the staff. He finally dismissed our complaint as us expecting too much as we had just had a perfect experience at Cameron House (for the second time).

If you go anyway, be sure to read the thank you cards and letters they have on display. If you are like us, you'll wonder if you are even staying at the same place.

I will be forever grateful that we choose to have our wedding elsewhere. I'm sure it would have been ruined, and no one would have cared.

We try very hard to get it right and receive many, many warm comments. Thankyou for pointing out all the great cards on the mantlepiece!

Sadly, although we try, we can't please everyone everytime and I'm sorry but this was not the hotel for this couple.

The main member of staff they had a complaint about has now left so posting a review 8 months after their stay is perhaps misleading.

Nice - but lacked ambience

from VivaLaDiva
We stayed for one night at Castle Venlaw on our way up to our wedding in Scotland. We booked a 'Romantic Suite'. Lovely room and really nice atmospheric extra bathroom with little ceiling 'stars'and candles. Would definitely recommend this room for a romantic interlude. However - the restaurant did not live up to expectations. The food was good - but the restaurant was a bit impersonal, no service staff around unless actually serving - so if you had a problem or wanted something you had to wait for someone to appear. There was no music and no atmosphere. It was extremely warm! No-one asked if everything was ok. Perhaps am being a bit picky here - but surely ambience is important whilst you enjoy your food. Breakfast was good. On the whole I would say its a nice place to stay but just lacked the 'finishing touches' that would have made it the perfect place to stay.

One of our Managers checks every guest into the hotel; the guest is given a business card from that manager with the offer to contact him/her if there are any problems or queries. Each room has a personalised welcome letter from me again asking the guests to contact the duty manager if they have any concerns. The welcome letter also has space on the reverse in which we solicit commnets about the hotel. We really want to get it right and respond to comments. It's unfortunate that this guest has taken a pop at us through tripadvisor rather than telling us himself.

If this guest was warm in his bedroom he could have turned down the radiator and/or opened the window. If he was too warm warm in the restaurant we could have moved him to a window table. Had he mentioned at the time or even when he left about the music and service issues we could have responded there and then.

We value all comnments but they are so much more useful if we have them direct and we can repsond to the guest. I have however looked at the issues raised regarding service and music and rectified them.

Very pleased...

from WaveyDaveSheffield
I'll be honest here, our 2 night break cost a lot more than I would usually be able to spend, but it was a treat for my wife's birthday. My expectations (as a Yorkshireman) for my money were quite high and after reading a couple of reviews on this site I was a little worried...
I shouldn't have been. Everything about our trip was perfect (except the weather - but even The Ritz can't offer that) thanks in no small part to the Castle Venlaw.
Peebles is beautifully situated between picturesque hills in the Tweed Valley. The hotel is perched on the hillside above the town, in well kept grounds.

We were met at the door and our bags whisked away to our room on arrival. Our huge room was well equipped, clean, warm and had views that would be very hard to better.

The staff throughout were friendly, approachable and attentive without being annoying. No snobbishness and nothing seemed too much trouble.

The menu in the restaurant was large and varied enough for any normal person. The food is at least as good as I've had anywhere, right up there with the best meals I've eaten.. honestly - beautifully presented, plentyfull and damn tasty too. The breakfasts were just as good. My only (tiny) criticism was that the restaurant was very quiet on the first night and a little more piped music wouldn't go amiss, though the second night was busier and this helped.

I was looking for a little bit of luxury for my wifes 40th and Castle Venlaw provided it. I've never stopped at The Hilton (nor am I likely too) so maybe I'm easier pleased than someone who has.. but for my money I came close enough.

Professional, but not a warm welcome

from Nortonator
The hotel offers a professional service - rooms are comfortable, location is beautiful and the food is delicious. However, there is no warmth to the service or staff which is a huge disappointment.

As long as you work to the timetable of the hotel, then you will have a lovely stay.

One of the most frequent commnets we get from our guests on our in house comment cards is how friendly, welcoming and accommodating our staff are.

You clearly didn't feel this. Why didn't you tell me about it when you stayed. Had you done so we could have perhaps made your stay perfect - and that's what we always try to do.

Nice family break

from TravellingWithKids0
We stayed here for one night with our kids (5 and 8). They have a lovely family room with a large main bedroom and a circular "children's den" off this room in the turret, with their own TV, videos, (old) toys. Also quite happy for kids (over 5) to eat with us in the main dining room, unlike some so-called family friendly hotels which require kids to eat separately. Uninspiring kids menu, but enough for them to find something to eat for one night.

So, a nice castle-type hotel that works if you want to bring your kids. Food quite good. Rooms nice but not if you want powerful showers and wide screen TVs.

Looked like to be nice walks from the hotel, but too muddy in February.
