I am 79 years and was at the Caledonion Hotel Nov 17th for 5 days. The was out of order all the time. I had 5 flights of stairs to climb each time to the room which was cold, but clean. Breakfasts were ..ok .... evening meals were awful. Just fancy small portions no potatoes, just large bowl of mixed veg. Staff were pleasant. Bar area was very cold until the last evening we were there. I certainly will NOT recommend anyone to go there.

I have never been moved enough to write a review before, but I am desperate to prevent anyone else from ruining their weekend by staying at this shabby, damp-smelling, appalingly run establishment. We went to Oban for a wedding and several friends also stayed at the hotel. In our small, dingy room, the 'curtains' (I use the term lightly) didn't even reach the sides of the window so we were woken up as soon as the sun made an appearance. If they were going for a nautical theme with the plastic white square, strung up by roap, they failed. There was no shower head in the bathroom and our 'romantic bay view' would have been more accurately described as, 'a train station view'. A point I find particularly galling as I had particularly requested a nice room and was assured by the 'honest' staff that it was one of the best. Our friends suffered equally with masking tape on the windows (presumably to keep out a draught?') and a toilet that didn't flush. I could go on but I hope you're getting the picture. One last thing, try and avoid the cafe downstairs if you like well-cooked food. An all round disappointment and I hope you find somewhere nicer to stay.

This hotel deserves minus 5 stars. Any good reviews you have read are forged. It is common knowledge in Oban that this hotel is a complete let-down in every aspect. The staff are unfriendly and untrained, the food is overpriced and bog-standard processed stuff, the hotel is noisy and generally a rotten place to stay. Do not even think of staying or eating there.

We booked a standard room with this Hotel. We arrived & were greeted by friendly staff. I was advised there was a Valet service costing £5.00 per day. I was assured there was CCTV & an attendant so my car would be safe. My room was nice but the lovely view was ruined by dirty windows. I got no sleep for the duration of my stay as there was a taxi rank situated outside the Hotel. People would stand screaming/shouting outside our single glazed windows after leaving pubs/clubs. We complained to the receptionist who admitted that they had received complaints in the past & had often had to call the police (still they didn't invest in double glazing). On departure I was informed by car window had been smashed. It turns out the Hotel park your car in the local train station car park which the public have 24hr access to. The Hotel also have the cheek to charge £2 extra compared to the train station. It cost us £125 to get car fixed. The Hotel refused to help with this cost as they got us to sign a waiver ensuring they were not held responsible for theft or damage. We only signed the waiver as we were assured there was CCTV & an attendant. This experience has totally tainted my view of Oban & I would never return.

Nice accomodation, shocking service!

from Dalriada
I stayed here with my wife and inlaws on what was meant to be a special weekend for them. Although the rooms and views were great the dining room service was the worst of any hotel i've stayed at. Despite complaining several times and eventually to the restaurant manageress things did just not get any better, the mostly foreign staff were simply not bothered! Coach parties seemed to get the best attention despite paying a lot less, wonder why? No hotel parking is available so meter to feed during the day. The hotel is located across the road from the main bus and taxi stance so if you want some loud early morning entertainment when the pubs close you won't be dissapointed, we got it both nights we stayed! This hotel has recently changed from being part of an excellent small group of hotels to a much larger chain, small is beautiful!!!

Sweet caledonian 23rd June

This hotel did us proud, past experience of the "older hotel" in Britain has not been too pleasant, but The Caledonian in Oban has restored our faith, at least in exploring more of Scotland and staying at its hotels. Although we read in Tripadvisor that parking may be a problem (as there is no private parking) we arrived at 5.30pm Friday and left the car virtually parked at the door of the hotel and after touring on the Saturday managed to do the same that night. The hotel although fully booked was very quite inside, outside at night was a different matter which is ok by me but ear plugs should be standard issue with single glazed rooms. The room itself was clean, decorated nicely and had a slight luxurious feel (big bed), ours even had a view of the harbour, not bad for £52 pppn. For breakfast there was a very good choice and was most enjoyable, just a pity the waiting staff were still sleeping standing up. We also had our evening meal in the hotel "cafe`bistro" on our first night and it was great , i would recommend the "Fishermans Boulas", which was served by friendly staff. Checking in and out, maids and night porters were all helpful and pleasant, we really did want to stay "just one more night".

this is a really bad hotel

We went for a quiet weekend in Oban, based on the reviews on this site we decided on The Caledonian. Good things first - lovely reception staff, and the burger I had in the bar was really really tasty.
Bad things - It's sooo noisy - we had a room at the back and both Friday and Saturday night it sounded like a riot was going on outside, loads of druken fights and screaming that went on well ater 3 am, now you can't blame the hotel for this but we asked for a quiet room - at the very least they should have warned us as apparently this kind of behaviour happens in Oban every weekend.
The mattress on the bed was little more than a collection of dodgy springs wrapped in a cover -it was really uncomfortable and didn't help or efforts to get some shut-eye. The extrator fan in the bathroom was broken and the carpets were dirty.
On our second night the hotel bar was full of very drunk people, some of whom had been drinking there all day, it turned nasty but the bar staff just kept on serving as if nothing was happening ! In fact most of the staff seemed more interested in figuring out the new hotel computer system rather than helping guests. The tables in the bar and outside were never cleaned or cleared away.
We were supposed to stay a 3rd night but baled out to a nice guest house on the esplanade.
This is one of the worst and most over-priced hotels I have ever stayed in !

What a relief

I stayed in a different hotel the week before this visit and having had a horrible experience. I was worried what the Oban Caledonian hotel would be like, especially as my wife was with me on this occasion.

I need not have worried. I booked directly with the hotel and reserved an ocean view room. On arrival the reception staff were welcoming and friendly and the room was excellent, with a view over the sea and harbour. The furniture was nice and the refurbished bathroom was excellent. We ate in the cafe bar as we had arrived late and the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Again, the staff were super.

The breakfast buffet had a good selection of fruits and cereals and the cooked breakfast was excellent.

Based on this visit, I wil be staying in the Caledonian hotel on all future trips to Oban.

Disappointing Stay

I have just returned from a weekend break
at this Hotel, I found the Hotel very
disappointing and not up to the standard
of other four star Hotels I have visited.
Breakfast was not very good, and the bathroom
could have been cleaner. Would not go back
to this Hotel.

Great Stay With An Upgrade

from simpleisgood
I apologize for the delayed review as it has been a couple of weeks since we travelled to this site. We arrived in Oban after a pleasant and scenic drive from Glasgow on March 26, 2006. Based on comments on TripAdvisor we knew to look for the car park around the corner but were disappointed that there was no where easily accessible to park and unload our luggage on the curb near the hotel, so we toted it all from the car park to the hotel.

I had booked a standard room and upon arrival we were very pleased to get an upgrade to a harbour view room. Although I do not think it was one of the Captains rooms it may have been, as the picture on the website looks exactly like our room. We had two huge sets of windows over looking the harbour and the Isle of Mull.

The room was very clean with nice linens and a pleasant selection of teas and biscuits.

The front desk staff was very pleasant and accomodating. The dining room staff was not as cheerful and the bar staff well they might as well as been statues, as they had absolutely no interest in communicating with us or serving us.

Overall we would definately return to Oban and the Caledonian. It is a great town and a nice hotel that is easily accessible to all the sites, the ferry and the comfortable Oban Inn Pub. - If you have a chance head north of town past Connell to the Scottish Sea Life Center, it's a fabulous animal rescue facility.

would stay again

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were on a one night stopover, and had a long tiring journey and were upgraded to a bay view room which we were delighted with - beautiful wooden sleigh bed - clean and cosy room. En-suite facilities excellent, a good size room - although we did have to ask for toilet rolls. Very clean and lovely fluffy white towels with complimentary toileteries. Plenty of hot water. Just a shame they haven't got secure parking, although we had no problem in parking our car in the public car park, but were a little worried about this. Dinner menu excellent and a good choice at breakfast. Staff friendly, we would certainly consider staying there again but maybe not in the height of summer as we think it would be too busy for us.

Good But Not Great

from PamDor
I steamed into Oban en route to the Isle of Mull, having spent the previous night at a wonderful B & B in Callander.
The Hotel has some good things going for it. It's located right on the water in the heart of the shopping center; the staff is friendly and obliging; and it's convenient to the ferry.
I was less impressed with my single room which, while very clean, was the size of a monk's cell and rendered me claustrophobic.
Despite being pointedly urged to frequent the hotel's bar and dining room for dinner, I opted to dine at EE-USK, a fabulous seafood restaurant located right on the wharf a short walk from the hotel. The Lismore oysters were each the size of a small lamb chop and incredibly tasty. Breakfast the following morning was what you'd expect from a larger hotel dining room buffet, i.e. lots of food but without much flavor.
On my next visit to Oban I'll either pony up for a larger room at the hotel or try a local B&B.

Peaceful and serene

from neonmeat
Just back from a weekend at the Hotel. We were there to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary and had booked an Ocean View room, with spa bath and four poster bed. Two nice comfy chairs were positioned at the large bay window, overlooking the bay. This was a place we preferred to be as opposed to wandering about the town, or in a pub. We had everything we required in our room, and if we needed anything else the staff were more than happy to accomodate. The food was of a very high standard as was the service, all very very good.

I work as a travel agent and have been to many hotels all over the world and am quite critical, generally from a professional point of view. I had no criticisms to make of this stay, whatsoever. the drive was wonderful from Glasgow and the weather was as perfect as you could expect for february.

Interestingly, it seems as though the Swallow chain have bought this and the other 2 sister hotels over, and that was changing hands this week. Lets hope they dont mess it up, with their greed and dumbing down of what is a charming hotel.

Oban luxury

from Mrs_McMinn
We have just enjoyed a fabulous nights stay in the Oban Caledonian. When we arrived, we parked in the Bank car park next door to offload our luggage. We paid £5 to have our car taken to a car park a little out of town by a porter as parking is limited in the town if you'd like to leave it there through the day. I had requested a room with a sea view and we were actually upgraded from a standard room to an "Ocean View" room, which had a king size bed and was a king sized room! It was beautiful, very tastefully decorated, with a lovely view of the harbour and Calmac ferries coming in and out all day.
Our main mistake of our stay was not dining in the hotel restaurant. We wandered around until we found a little Chinese restaurant called China - big mistake. Once inside we felt we couldn't leave, and although the food was of reasonable quality the surroundings were not!
Breakfast in the hotel was served in a lovely bright room and hot food was served, rather than buffet style. Staff were friendly and curteous, and we enjoyed sitting by the fires in the lounge area.
Only problem was that when we received our car back, there was a scratch on the bonnet - the car park they use is not secure, it's just for public use and as kids seem to roam the streets at the weekend, I'm not sure it was in a safe enough position.
All in all we had a lovely stay, enjoyed a trip to Mull on the ferry and would definitely return to the Caledonian Hotel.
