Historical Traveller Reviews of Oban Bay Hotel

Good, but spoiled by penny pinching and slow service at breakfast.

from YorkshirePhil
A friendly professional welcome and a smart, clean modern room and bathroom. Our only gripe was breakfast, which was advertised as a help yourself buffet, but was actually waiter service. One of the mornings we allowed 1 hour for breakfast and still nearly missed our boat due to the extremely slow service (10 mins to take an order and then 45 mins for the cooked food). The full breakfast was hardly generous portion wise and included the smallest bowl of beans I have ever seen. If you wanted the fish dishes (smoked haddock for example) the SURCHARGE was £6.95 - this seems a bit steep when you are having this instead of the fry-up! Conclusion - a friendly clean and well-kept hotel with a great view of Oban Bay, which is spoiled by the penny pinching at breakfast.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and your kind words with regards to our rooms and your stay. Our breakfast service did used to be buffet but this just caused us large ques at the restaurant doors and our full breakfast with the number of different options gives a great breakfast and now its been improved again. Thanks again for writing a review.

fawllty towers

Oh dear!...Catalogue of errors starting with the parking or lack of it. Pre-booked parking as advised (at a rate of £5 a night!) and when I got there all spaces taken. Got shown to their over flow car park...or as it should be called a pot-holed, un tar macced muck filled back yard. Clothes and luggage ruined trying to negotitate it.

Incompetent and somewhat rude staff couldn't even get the room number correct.

Breakfast was appalling. Uncooked and tiny portions. I see they have the cheek to charge £15 for this!

Only good thing is the view over the bay from the bar.......avoid avoid avoid.

Briliant Value

from kennyWestLothian
I booked this Hotel for our family reunion. I'm glad I did as the food, which was plentiful and well cooked and the decor were top class. The service in the morning was a little slow, but still excellent value for money by a long way. The views from the rooms was another strong point for this hotel and we also had the time to nip over on a "cruise" to Mull and get the bus to Tobermory. All in all, a great weekend for our family get together. Would we go back....try and stop us.

awful service - would not return

from kirstysnow
we booked a two night deal for this hotel and were impressed with the featured hot tub, sauna and spa. Our room was small and very dark, dusty and damp bathroom. The mattress was awful - easily the worst I have ever slept on. The sauna, hot tub and spa were all out of commission, when my husband mentioned this to the staff, the reply was that we were on a special rate so could not expect all facitilities to be available - sorry but that is exactly what we do expect! No sound proofing - our room was on the bottom floor, some workmen who were in the hotel had parked their van next to our window and can't say I enjoyed their swearing and singing all afternoon, when we were trying to take a nap! Our room was not cleaned on the 2nd day although the cleaner delighted in standing in the corridor shouting at her collegues.

This hotel looks lovely - the food wasn't bad, but certainly would not recommend this place to anyone.

Great Hotel

from C.Findlay
Just back from a great 2 night stay at The Oban Bay Hotel. We stayed on a DBB deal. We enjoyed everything about this hotel. It is situated right on the seafront so there are fantastic views. It is a 5 minute walk along the prom into the little town of Oban. Oban is a lovely town. The staff are all SO friendly and helpfull. The food was fantastic. Real Scottish home cooking. The waiting staff are so nice.
The facillities are great. I can't believe that at 7pm on a cold February night I was sitting outside looking out to sea in a hot tub! Luxury! There is also a wonderful sauna and steam room. There is also a spa where you can massages etc.
The whole hotel was refurbished last year to the highest standard. The room fittings are all very tastefull.

I would not hesitate to recomend this hotel to anyone and cannot wait to go back ! Top Marks !

Great website, shame the experience didnt live up to it...

from Felix07
The website for this hotel promised a chic, modern hotel and spa on the seafront and we were excited to go there on our first trip to Oban. The hotel has been recently refurbished in the de riguer neutral tones, leather furniture and wooden floors of the noughties but it has missed the important things like good plumbing, heating and putting the customer first!

On our arrival we found our room to be small and with no view - granted we had come on a deal (£80 per night, bed, breakfast and dinner) so we got what we had expected - no complaints.

We decided to upgrade for £25 per night to an "executive suite". The heating was switched on when we got to the room it was about 0c outside so the room was fairly cold - we went out for a walkd thinking that when we got back the room would have defrosted. Wrong! When I asked for another heater I was told there werent any. (Scotland in January.. a hotel with no central heating... extra heaters should be available) - we got an extra blanket. Not much help when you get out of the bath and are cold!.

There was no proper shower in the bathroom just a bath with a tap attachment (..am wondering what "executive" doesnt need a shower ..)If you have long hair its impossible to wash your hair properly in a bath! I could have lived with this though but the room was still like an icebox ( I grew up in a house with no central heating so I am fairly hardy - I just dont expect this when I am paying to stay in a hotel!) The window then leaked all over the carpet when it rained overnight. We mentioned all of our issues to the manager in the hope something would be done but no.

The Spa facilities that this hotel offers are not what I had expected. A steam room that was not working properly and a monsoon shower that I couldnt get to work. The changing areas offer no privacy and are accessible by members of staff and external workers when you are using the facilities. Slightly odd...?

Our overall stay was not what we had expected or needed on our much needed getaway and it shouldnt have been. It was a quiet time of year and our problems should have been addressed properly. On departure we were expected to pay for the upgrade and were offered nothing by way of a discount to make up for our problems. If you want customer retention or recommendations a fifinancial gesture never goes amiss...

This hotel has all the makings of a good hotel but failed to show this whilst we were there. Its all very well having a great website and wooden floors but if your guests are cold, the rooms have leaky windows and the plumbing is substandard you have wasted the refurbishment money. Get the basics right PLEASE!!

Excellent break

from chris-hugh
Our journey from Glasgow to Oban had been very trying as there was a gale raging and torrential rain. When we got to the hotel it was so warm and welcoming that we forgot the journey immediately. The double room was a good size, spotlessly clean, very substantially furnished, and the bed was the epitomy of comfort. The hospitality tray was very generous and replenished every day. The bathroom was spotless with lovely fluffy towels and a very good shower.
The breakfast was one of the best we have experienced, and we spend a lot of time in hotels. All the courses were ordered from the extensive menu and served to the table. Dinner was a wide choice beautifully served and top quality. The staff were efficient and friendly and helpful. All in all this was one of the best value breaks we have ever had, costing £104 00 per person dinner bed and breakfast. for 3 nights.

Beware the shortcomings of this hotel

from fkf
This hotel is more noteworthy for what it doesn't have then what it does have to offer.
Although I phoned the hotel directly to inquire about air conditioning which I was told they had, they don't.
I asked for a room with a view and I got a view of the laundry and a gravel road at the rear of the hotel. Work started early in the day and the noise from same woke us at 6:30AM.
They aslo don't have a viewable tv, all the channels were snowed out. Didn't make much difference, the TV was a 11" model, about as big as the model in our mini van.
No clock, no radio, ,no wash cloths, 1 hand towel for 2 people, The mattress although fairly new had very little support and there were no springs or slats to reinforce it. No newspaper, no safe, no kleenex, no sound insulation. (we could hear the people next door), . There was no ice in the entire place, their sole ice machine was broken, we went to the hotel next door for ice water. On the up side, there were new Ikea quality firnishings, the staff was friendly and the bed linen was good.

nice hotel, great views

from chicolatino
We stayed here in August 2006. The hotel has a great location right down at the waterfront with lovely views over to the islands. It is on the outskirts of Oban but it is only about a 5 min walk into the centre of town
The parking is not great with only about 7 spaces infront of the hotel and about another 7 at the back. People then tend to double park but if they do this they are meant to leave keys at reception.A tip for parking is to go to the back of the hotel. A road up the side of the cathedral then a small road on the first left. There was plenty room there even if it means a couple of mins walk.
We had a room in the extension of the hotel and this had been refurbished. They were nice modern rooms and had a lovely shower in the bathroom. Ours had a leak though and I think that the builders were not the best!!
The restuarant was nice and the food was ok aswell. The staff were pleasant enough but they kind of just wandered around not really under any orders. Twice we had to wait to have our order taken while 5 other tables who came in after us were served. We were in no rush but just a bit of guidance would have done them no harm.
We never used the spa or sauna as we were always busy but we did take a look at the hot tub outside. It was a bit grotty when we looked and had two cigarette ends floating about in it which kinda put us off so we never went in.
The conservatory at the front is beautiful and no matter what the weather there were always lovely views over to the island.
I would reccomend this hotel as it is nice and quiet but also central for visting Oban and i would probably go back there myself.

Top Local Tips for Oban

McCaig's Tower If you get the chance to go to McCaig's Tower definately go the view over Oban and beyond is amazing!

Typical Scottish coastal town Bring a rain coat with a hood as it nearly always rains at some point in the day and if you bring a brolly it will get blown away.

Parking As the hotel has limited parking, we found free parking 200 yards away and also hidden behind the cathedral next door!!
