Overpriced and Impudent!

First, anyone must start a review on Duisdale by saying what a spectacular location with nice gardens, trails, views and attractive house. But that is about all that is special about this place. We paid over $400 for one night (plus around $150 for dinner) after coming from Hotel du Vin luxury in Glasgow and divine accommodations at Barcaldine Castle, both of which hovered around $200 (plus about $150 for a fabulous dinner at Hotel du Vin). What we got was a mediocre room, quite tiny, scant views from window, no frills at all really for the exorbitant price. And it was close to the lobby where a group of people from the boats decended into the noisy bar area. And the "award winning" meals? Lackluster to be blunt. We waited about an hour with pitiful cocktails in the lounge waiting with hunger for our appointed reservation. They took our order for wine while we sat. There was one interesting Bordeaux on the menu. When we ordered it she asked, "uh, I don’t know about any wines, just tell me what number is in the left column?" Are you kidding me? At these prices I get one from column A, one from column B? The meal was just OK but the pigeon was way overcooked. The dessert was the only interesting part. After coming from an amazing experience with fine service and superlative food at the other posh accommodations above this was a costly mistake. If they charge the same price as other similar establishments I would not be writing this review. But twice the price for half the joy? It is an average place in an above average location. UPDATE: So I reviewed Duisdale just as you see here and they responded with insults. They claim we had a "vast wine bill" which explained the cost (we drank 1 and 1/2 bottles in 24 hours) and that we arrived on a "schoolbus" which was actually the only public bus on the island, not a schoolbus (if they were suggesting we looked good for our 30's and 40's that would be nice, but I take this as an insult suggesting we were young and inexperienced). We came from Portree and then taxi to the train. How impudent!

After an incredible series of stops within Scotland by our five star tour service 'Scotland Calling', they brought us to the Duisdale Country House, a beautiful estate located near the sea in the rich greenery of that southeasterly section of the Isle of Skye known as Sleat (pron. 'Slate' by the Scots). The staff, Anita, Joanne, Agnes, and James were wonderful, and exceeded our expectations with their helpfulness and care for our needs. The food was great, the rooms very well conceived, and the beautiful grounds lit up at night made it magical.

Top Local Tips for Isle of Skye

See a kelp forest, seals and otters Go on the Atlantis Seaprobe glass-bottomed boat trip. It sounds tacky but is excellent. You see loads of wildlife including big jellyfish, seals - so cute! - otters if you're lucky, and lots of birds. Also a shipwreck, and an amazing underwater kelp forest and sealife. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, pointing out all the different creatures and providing excellent explanations - especially of kelp, I kid you not. Buy tickets at Kyle of Lochalsh tourist office

Ferry Try to use the ferry - either the Calmac one from Mallaig, or the local and historic one at Glenelg (summer only). It's a beautiful way to arrive..."over the sea to Skye".
