Iona is beautiful but primal and with a wildness that is at once enticing and startling. But the St. Columba hotel was a sanctuary. The staff is helpful, patience and kind; the food is fantastic. The sitting room is gracious, the outside inviting (in early fall)and the wine and whiskey selections were fine. My only reservation is that the single room I was in was tiny (but cozy) and the hotel was creaky and the walls thin but the water was hot, the toilet worked and ambiance is perfect for the pilgrim or adventurer. I imagine it could also be a very romantic place for couples.

Top Local Tips for Isle Of Iona

Don't miss worship in the Abbey Iona Abbey has worship services 9 AM and 9 PM daily. Plan your arrival and departure to attend as many as possible. No sermon; just fine creative liturgy and music. You have not experienced Iona until you have soaked in the liturgy of the Abbey. Abbey also has tours hourly given by Historic Scotland. Nice intro to the Abbey. At the Iona Community's Bookstore you can buy A Pilgrim's Guide to Iona Abbey by Chris Pohill. I recommend it as a way to walk and pray through the Abbey itself.

Pilgrimage Try to do the island pilgrimage route. I wanted to but wasn't there on the right day. Beaches are out of this world.
