I had been trying to make a reservation in this hotel for a few weeks and no body bothered to reply to my emails, faxes or telephone messagesthat had been left, to me this does not seem like good customer service.

charming riverside hotel in historic old-town

We booked the Glen Mhor on for a prepaid rate (I think it was approx $150). We had room number 1, which was a nicely furnished second floor room (a queen bed). The bathroom was very clean, and the hotel is VERY charming! Its located right on the river ness bank in old-town Inverness.

I'm frankly baffled by some of the negative comments about this place. Anyways....

Full breakfast was included (ie: eggs, meat, cereal, etc) -- you could get a full scottish breakfast, vegetarian breakfast, or smoked fish, etc. Very tasty!

We didn't try the hotel bistro/restaurant for dinner, but the menu looks delicious! We did however, at the recommendation of the very nice night porter hang out at the hotel bar -- and it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip! We did some whiskey tasting with other travellers staying at the hotel and had some good conversation with the night porter and guests.

Also the hotel is very convenient to walk to most places in the city, including the bus depot, tourist info center, beautiful isle gardens, etc.

Beware ground floor twin in annexe

Great location and fine interior, but the twin room I had in the annexe was by what seemed to be the laundry...which operated well into the night! Bathroom was a mite garish.

Stayed here for a 3 night break after Christmas and had a great time. Room was of a good size, bed comfortable, although they did have "matress protectors" which were more like a plastic sheet. We removed this and told the front desk we didn't want it put back on. No issue really. Excellent little bar downstairs, very cosy and quaint. Breakfast was excellent, and the hotel restaurant was good, although we only had lunch there. Nice location on the River Ness, 5 minutes to the centre of Inverness. We had a front facing room overlooking the river, which you should request. Although not hard to drive to once you know the location, it may be an idea to phone the hotel and asked them how to get to the hotel rather than relying on Google as we did, and failed. We would stay here again no problem.

I stayed here with my partner the last weekend in September 2006. First of all, when entering the hotel and the reception area it smelled like an OAP home - it was really stale, smelt slightly of urine and lacked air (seriously). We were given a room on the top floor and it was the most bizzare room I have ever been given in a hotel. The bottom of the windows were mirrors - obviously to make the room look bigger, and the windows did not open. When we climbed on a chair to try to see what direction our room was facing, we only saw roof tiles. The bathroom was really odd - covered in plastic flooring everywhere - including the walls and there was bacteria around the shower basin. So we complained and asked for another room. At first they didn't quite seem to understand why we wanted to move room, but eventually said we could on our second night. On our second night we were given a much bigger room with a 4 poster bed overlooking the river - but the bathroom was filthy. It was really small, the shower was nothing more than a plastic hose attachment on the taps and it was full of bacteria around the shower head and the bath. I had clean the shower before I used it! On the plus side the view was good and breakfasts are good, but thats it!

Excellent hotel in a great location. 5 minutes walk from the centre of town but still peaceful and relaxing with great views of the River Ness. Rooms were stunning and cleanliness was not an issue. Staff were friendly were helpful and friendly. Would recommend to anyone.

Handy for the centre and quiet if you are in the annexe.

Stayed three nights and booked direct, beating the price I could get on any of the other sites I tried. Ended up in a double room with a massive sitting area in an annexe of the hotel overlooking the river , which meant going outside to get to the the rest of the amenities. This was no great problem and as I was on the upper floor I never heard a thing from any other guests.. Staff were friendly and I enjoyed breakfast, where, on the second morning they had remembered my preferences from the previous day - impressive - it is not a small hotel. The room was clean and tidy and I enjoyed having a massive sofa to lounge on. I dined there one evening, but didn't enjoy the food - I prefer simple dishes - the fish pie seemed to have every vegetable known to man in it. There are lots of alternatives nearby to eat and you are within walking distance of the town centre. Parking can be problematical during the day if you don't get a space in the hotel car park as roadside parking is restricted. I recommend this hotel on price and comfort but suggest direct contact and hold out for a good deal. The annexe has no lift and a narrow steep staircase so might not be suitable for any one infirm.

hotel and food very good,room was very poor.
we had a double room on the top floor that was very small , the windows had mirrows on the bottom half and would not open , i feel if we would have had a better room we would have enjoyed our stay.ask for room with veiw of river

Great Hotel

Stayed for two nights, and found this hotel very comfortable.The staff are friendly and helpfull. The rooms are nicely decorated with comfortable beds.
The food in Nico's was excellent.
Would definetly stay again.

Caution if you are requesting a standard room

We stayed two nights at Glen Mhor. The first night we were shown to a second floor "standard" room that was anything but standard. The tiny room held two twin beds, the ceiling height of the room ranged from 6'5" to 3' and had one tiny window with ratty pull-down shades. The tiny single-pane window vented at the top and, thus, the shades could not be pulled down without impeding air flow. Given so much daylight in June, keeping the shades up made it difficult to sleep. Even with leaving the shades up, the room became unbearingly warm with moderate ambient temperature and diminished airflow. In the morning, we asked about alternative rooms and were immediately given a key to a first floor room that was below our somewhat miserable accommodation. This "other" standard room (same price) was much larger, had larger en suite facilities, full ceiling height (possibly 10'), three large double-paned windows and full drapes. Apparently, this room was available the first night but we were given what we considered a very sub-standard room for the same price of the better room. The logic of this room assignment is unknown. If we had spent two nights in the second room, we would rate this hotel well above average. A word of advice - stay away from second floor rooms in this facility. Despite our room problem, the hotel was clean, location was ok and breakfast was fine.

My wife and I, along with our two daughters (young adults), stayed at the Glen Mhor hotel for two nights in early June as part of a larger vacation.

Both our rooms faced the river and were large and comfortable, with very large bathrooms with tub and showers. There was no air conditioning, but there was no need for it at this time of the year. The views from the room were wonderful. The rooms were very clean.

The hotel is a couple of blocks from the downtown area.

Breakfasts were very large and included both cold choices and hot food. The restaurant itself is a bit expensive for dinners, but the food is fantastic and well worth the money. The restaurant appeared to be busy both nights that we stayed there. For several years, the restaurant catered for many Inverness events that involved the royalty.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again if I was in Inverness.

Top Local Tips for Inverness

Bus travel is very cheap! We got to Inverness by taking a bus from Edinburgh. It took about 3 hours, but it was a beautiful drive through the Scottish Highlands, and best of all it only cost us 1 pound each (or $2). We booked through a discount busline called Megabus. The price goes up the closer you get to the travel date, so best to book in advance.

scenic walk through islet parks the hotel is located along the banks of the river ness. there is a footpath that runs along the banks to some beautiful islet parks and eventually to botanic gardens. all told, it is maybe a 10-15 minute walk along the river to get to the parks (the whole walk is beautiful) -- and i would recommend anyone going through Inverness spend some time taking this stroll!

Car hire and drive in the highlands Not much to see in Inverness but be sure to take a long walk around River Ness. Hire a car and drive to Kyle of Lochalsh, see Urquhart and Eillean Donan castle on the way. Cross the Skye bridge and back towards Loch Maree (A 890) and then return to Inverness (can be done in a day).
