George Hotel, Inverary

from Kara2
We have not actually stayed at this hotel which, incidentally, is family run, but we have eaten there quite a few times, and on different occasions.

The rooms are a delight. They are unique and themed. We particularly loved the Merchant's Room (at least I believe that was the name) which was furnished with antiques from India. There was a huge raised roll top bath in one part of the room, apart from a super, de luxe en suite. Totally dedicated to hedonism and luxury.

The hotel now boasts a very large conservatory in which guests may dine, although there are many tables in the inn itself.

Whether resident or diner, the George is well worth a visit as the food is fabulous, authentic Scottish fare with flair.

Tried to book this hotel, but due to short notice it was fully booked, but the staff recomended a lovely B+B just over the road which i couldn't fault. We used the restaurant on the first day and susiquently used it everyday afterwards as the standard of the food is superb ! It was a real pleasure to eat and drink in such a great place. Even though i didn't stay here myself i heard nothing but good things from guests and the food was such a delight i thought it deserved a minute of my time to review this hotel

Great Scottish Stop

from TheYoungLaird
We stayed last weekend in August for the second year running. Room 27 which is one of the cheaper ones is fab!. Great furniture, really soft bed, huge bathroom, claw foot bath etc. Could have had hotter water and more power in the shower but this did not detract at all.
Food is great, good service, parking, smiley staff. I'll be back next year1!

Loved it - Great value - will return

from amack
We stayed 2 nights in room 8 - the only complaint is that is looks into the beer garden and is quiet low down - bit goldfish bowlish on nice days - however close the curtains and all is well.

Room was fantastic - spotlessly clean - huge jacuzzi bath large comfy 4 poster bed loads of pillows and plenty of huge fluffy towels! No fridge - we were given loads of ice and 2 icebuckets for drinks we took upstairs though and the remote didnt work but probably not meant to be in a room like that to watch tv!

We had a lovely romantic break, fabulous food from the restaurant both nights. Drank in the lounge and the pub and were welcomed in both.

Whole hotel was extremely clean.
Staff sometimes struggled with English language but helpful none the less.

Service at breakfast was not great but the food was so it made up for the slow service.

All in all would recommend it to everyone - great value much cheaper than most places for the standard of room we had. We will return

The George has turned terrible!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After visting The George on numerous occasions we decided to stay over and try the delights of the new restaurant.
Shown to our seats by a sour faced lady we presumed the food would then be as good as we've always had... The med-rare steak was as tough as old shoes and the venison was hard and inedible. On sending the dishes back the second attempts were only marginly better.
The staff didn't have a smile amongst them and being there seemed an inconvenience. Deciding to retreat to our room with a glass of port we were handed them (abruptly) in two half pint glasses complete with lipstick smudge!
This used to be a brilliant venue and I hope that the pub remains so... Obviously going through some teething problems the staff all need a boost of moral and the chef needs some cooking classes.
A restaurant is made by doing more than adding £5 to every dish and sitting us on uncomfortable chairs.

All in all, lovely

from theworldlaughs
Overall our stay at the George Hotel was excellent. The staff were very friendly and did everything that they could to help. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was superb and we would definitely recommend the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Our room was fine, but an investment in a more comfortable bed would not be amiss and the bathroom could have been a bit cleaner. The decoration of the room was nice, but could have been finished to a higher standard. All in all, however, our stay at the George was lovely. It is one of the best hotels in the area and is excellent value for money.

wonderful memories

from aesmith
Saw this site and had to make a comment; we visited this hotel 4 or 5 times, and each time was a joy, excellent food, individual, quirky and welcoming rooms - surely the biggest sunken jacuzzi in the western world.
friendly staff, and easy to speak to other residents and chat about - mountains/sport/anything.
so easy to travel out from here also, great things of interest in and around this lovely little town, the jail, and the nearby ancient capital and hill fort of the Dalriads- plant your foot in the ancient footprint!- back in Inverary remember to climb the hill, and taste the view, then back to the George for a chilled white or a rich red, - and for 'himself' a dram of the best - so many to choose from.
One time, the weather was SO bad, but in the George with the cosy fire, the rain might howl and the strom might beat against the windows - no problems- it just made it cosier!
This was our special place, strongly recommended to all, a gem. A place to treasure which will make and hold your memories in its strong walls.

A Diamond in the Rough

from anderjim
From outside, The George might easily be mistaken for another struggling Scottish High Street hotel. What we found inside, however, was an experience we'd been longing for but had not yet found -- a ramble of ancient, cozy, firelit public rooms serving drinks and food that someone had put a bit of thought behind. Our guest room, Number 9, was a dream come true, particularly at the price. Don't miss Loch Fyne whisky shop across the street, either, when you go -- which you should!

Instant Romance and lots of bubbles

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have stayed at the George Hotel for over ten yers now and have never been dissappointed. The 3 newest rooms have certainly added a new dimension to this very welcoming hotel. The Merchants Room in particular is a must if you want to rekindle the romance or if you have somethinng very special to celebrate (ideal place to propose !!) - the only problem is that you wont want to leave your room to explore the menue, malts or Inverary itself. The massive jacuzzie tub is sheer luxery and there is even a shelf built into the wall that is the perfect size to hold a chilled bottle of champagne whilst you soak in the jacuzzie - bubbles all round!!

Great pub grub taken to a higher level and great malts to sample before wandering across the road to buy a bottle or two from the wee whiskey shop.

Can't wait to go again.

Top Local Tips for Inveraray

Inverarary jail Surprisingly good fun - really good wax models of innmates and interesting look into Scotland's past. People were once thrown in jail for stealing turnips or playing bagpipes on a Sunday!
