Historical Traveller Reviews of Gretna Hall Hotel

Wonderful Couple of Days

from macomarsh
Before we visited the Gretna Hall Hotel we read, with interest, some of the reviews on Trip Advisor and were surprised at the extremes. It appeared that people either loved it or hated it. No one seemed to have a 'middle of the road' opinion so we were a little apprehensive.

However, once our party arrived, all fears were taken away. It was evident that the remarks of some reporters were more to do with their unhappiness at getting married than with the hotel itself.

Yes...the carpets were worn in the bar and corridors but the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and service wonderful.

My wife and I were lucky enough to have our wedding in the Linton Room over in the wedding location and the staff really know how to make it a special day. It was raining but due to the great people there, it didn't spoil the day one bit.

Our party used 3 rooms, all of which were clean and well sized. Ours was the family room, which has bunk beds as well as the double and a nice seating area. It had a patio which has a wonderful view of the gardens. If you get a choice, ask for the garden side rooms for this purpose.

I read from some that the noise was loud from the motorway if you are located on the other side of the hotel. To find out for myself, I stood by a room that backed on to the motorway while it was being cleaned and it had its windows open. You could hear the traffic but not excessively. It certainly would not have prevented me sleeping or enjoying my stay. Just a point to note is that all of the hotels in the Gretna Green location back onto the Motorway as it runs right over the middle of the village and will have this as a common theme. Do not be frightened off by this as the noise levels are not excessive.

To sum up, the location is perfect for weddings and the setting is very pretty. The rooms are clean and the staff friendly. I agree with a previous review that some people will pick at anything and are probably venting at something other than the hotel!

I would definitley stay there again and would highly recommend it for aspecial day!

t fault it!

Just returned form renewing our vows in the Blacksmith's Workshop. Stayed in a Macallan Bedroom, double room with own patio onto beautiful gardens. Granted the carpets in the hall are quite worn but the bedrooms were clean and comfortable and the service from the staff excellent. Breakfast has plenty of choice and well organised. Setting of hotel beautiful. Anyone visiting has to remember that it is ran as a wedding business and it is done very well at that! We came across some people who were out to pick fault but considering the fact that they had married at 11.30 that morning and were wanting a divorce by 4.00pm they would do really wouldn't they?!!! All in all everyone was enjoying the atmosphere and their big day. Would highly recommend to anyone, especially to renew your vows. Wouldn't have missed it for the world!

Tatty Hotel that charges top prices!

from DavidNorfolkSalesGuy
We paid the Rack Rate (Thats the full room rate) that normal hotels rarely charge unless its a last minute booking! We were there to see our friends get married the next day.

We had travelled for around 5 hours in the car, so we just wanted to check in get changed and relax. However, the room we were given was on the ground floor of the hotel, miles away from reception in the bed had about 1ft of space around the outside, so very small. The only ventilation was a window that opened about 4inchs and when you did this the sound from the motorway (which is about 20 metres behind the hotel) was deafening!

The original hotel building dates from the 1700's and looks great on all the photos, however, what they do not show you is attached just on the right of the picture is a very poorly maintained 1970's pebbledashed extension.

Their website also mentions that ALL rooms were refurbished recently. That is true, but they were not done to a very high standard. The carpets are badly worn and in the corridors are riddled with duct tape to hold them together.

On the plus point, which is why I have reviewed this as Okay and not Terrible, is that the food in the restaurant was good and served pretty promptly.

Please if you are thinking of having you big day here, please do not be tricked into paying the TOP rate. We met several older couples who were staying here for a few days and they had the best rooms and paid only £25 DB&B per person.

The Wedding Planners

from Han_Chris
What can I say, this was the most amazing day of my life, I got to Marry the man of my dreams after 7 years and this was the place we chose.
Our wedding party arrived on the Monday and we took over the bar giggling until closing time. The staff were completely helpful, making sure everyone knew their places for the next day.
We stayed in a twin room which was clean, plenty of towels and very comfortable.
The rooom was perfect for the pre wedding evening.
The staff were really good fun and were to hand all of the time we were there and dealt with evey minor bride to be demand that I could throw at the them. They were so professional.
The Wedding day, meal and drinks went completly to plan with everyone having the most fabulous day.
The wedding evening room my Husband and I had teh Bourbonne Smythe which was eloquently decorated with exceptional facilities including a jacuzzi bath and complementry bottle of champagne.
I would recommend these guys and this hotel any time.

t be staying here again!

from babychicken77
I stayed here for two nights for a hen weekend in March 2007. There were three of us sharing a room, the third person had to sleep on a camp bed on the floor, but still had to pay the full price (£95 DBB for the weekend each).

The bed wasn’t comfortable, it really needed a new mattress and creaked every time I moved. The room was a bit tatty and the bathroom could have done with a proper clean.

The food wasn’t great – although the service was fine.

I definitely wouldn’t stay here again.

Fantastic value

We have just returned from The Gretna Hall Hotel after staying for 4 days on the New Year Package. It cost £308 for each adult and there were 50 of us. We first thought it was a bit expensive but it was my daughters choice of wedding venue. She was married on new years eve in the Blacksmiths Workshop and all I can say is that it was the most beautiful wedding that I have ever attended in my life, the memories are priceless! The Hotel and Staff were fantastic. The food was out of this world, never have I been served so many outstanding meals in all my travels. It just leaves me speechless and emotional. The weather was horrendous on the day but the rain stopped for the wedding due to the mini hurricane..but it all added to the uniqueness of the whole experience. Unforgettable!!!!!!

I would like to finish by thanking ALL the staff, Management waitessses, room service, groundsmen, and catering staff and to add that we couldn't have received better if we had been royalty! Which one of the aunties actually felt! Thank you so very much.

Awful - Never Again

from JimBobGeoffery
We stayed for one night and that was long enough! The room was terrible, smelt very musty and damp. My fiancee's had to take her allegy pills to get through the night.

The food was okay although had to wait a long time for the starter. There was no offer of drinks or sight of a wine list. The portion sizes were a little on the small side.

The room could do with updating and a good clean! The floor tiles in the bathroom were loose and very dangerous when wet.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in Gretna.

Simply Awful

from Downundercouple
We stayed there one night and never again. I can see why the staff did not ask us if we enjoyed our stay at the end of it---which did not come quickly enough. The bed was dreadful, with a deep dent in it---a chiropractor's nightmare. The food was mass produced and best left alone. The staff were largely unhelpful. The location is terrible---right near the motorway and very noisy. We had a nice view of a gas cylinder out of our window. I would not recommend the place to my worst enemy. It was a real rip off. If you want to visit Gretna Green, make it a day trip!!

Never Again

from mish99
Stayed for one night for my best friends wedding and would never stay there again. My husband, myself and our four children stayed in the family room, bunk beds, double bed, campbed and sofa bed, sofa bed turned out to be two seater sofa not sofa bed, so my husband who might I add is 6ft 7tall,and has had numerous spinal operations had to sleep on the camp bed and I had the two little ones in bed with me. After paying £150 a night no way was my two year old son sleeping on a two seater settee with the risk of falling off and cracking his head on the coffee table. The room hadn't been cleaned, both bedroom and bathroom bins were full of rubbish, also when sitting on the toilet I burnt my leg on the towel rail, no switch to turn it off......... breakfast was nice but didn't make up for the rest of the stay. Hotel needs desperately refurbishing and cleaning, my daughter ran around in bare feet at the wedding reception and her feet were black, you'd think she'd been down the coal mine, disgusting. Never again! Other wedding guests were complaining too but didn't make a big deal as not to upset the bride and groom as they were upset enough that their big day was ruined.
