Historical Traveller Reviews of Craiglynne Hotel

Very helpful staff

from ridcully73
I arranged a group stay (around thirty rooms) at the hotel, and we had it pretty-much to ourselves. I had read the reviews already posted and was a little apprehensive at the prospect of the stay, but it turned out to be perfectly acceptable... to me at least.
The staff were brilliant, and helped us at every turn. Admittedly without them and their cooperation and assistance, the fabric of the building would be likely to sour a stay there. The owner (a new owner, incidentally) needs to shell out a few grand to replace carpets, especially the stair-carpet which is worn into holes in places, and to paint the chipped skirting boards and so forth.
It's worth remembering that any hotel furnishings get a lot of abuse and a lot of traffic, so it's really not fair to expect them not to show it.
The hotel doesn't have the gloss of some more modern buildings, and it's true that the bathrooms in most rooms are afterthoughts (remember when it was built, after all. Even the Vanderbilts' Biltmore House doesn't have en-suite in many of the bedrooms, and it is from the same period), so if you're looking for soulless rows of identical rooms leading off an arrow-straight corridor, then it's not the place for you... but on the other hand, hell mend you.
It's got character, it's got charm, it's got first-rate staff and first-rate food, so if you find there's a damp patch on your bathroom ceiling, I suggest you remind yourself that it's not YOUR ceiling, and that you don't have to fix it.

Would I go back? I almost certainly will.

Charming hotel!

I booked a round trip in Scotland and the travel agent choosed the Craiglynne Hotel.

Because of the mixed reviews in Trip Advisor I was courious to see the hotel with my own eyes.

Let me say it right away: I liked this hotel very much. It is charming, clean and comfortable. The temperature in the room was perfect. I had no problem at all with the water in the shower.

We had breakfast and dinner included in the package and I was surprised by the quality and quantity of both! Dinner and breakfast was served by very polite staff which were very efficient too.

It is true that some of the furniture should be repaired, to say the least. It is true that the shower cabin will cause problems to everyone higher than 1,8 meters because it is not high. Finally you can hear people when they walk in the room above yours. Personally, I always wear earplugs when I travel just to be sure that noise will not be an issue when I want to sleep. But it was true for me too, that when I stayed there a majority of the people were over 60 years old. This means that the evenings are very quiet :-)

I think that £110 for a double room inclusive breakfast and dinner seams an ok price in such an expensive country. On the other hand I dont know how much does it cost to stay at other hotels in Grantown on Spey so do your research if you are not convinced.
As I said, I found it very charming!

liked the scones

Before I set off last week I read two of the most negative reports possible about this my short break with some trepidation. When I arrived at the hotel, we were allocated a clean twin room on the ground floor which suited us very well. We were also welcomed with tea and scones which suited us very well too. I am glad to say that we had a lovely few days beak with good food and pleasant, helpful service. It was excellent value for money.

Great Service

This hotel was a little old fashioned and looked a wee bit tired in places, but was clean and adequate. The staff were excellent and could not do enough for you. They were always smilling and assisting folk when necessary. Nothing was too much bother for them. The food was varied and excellent, with lots of traditional Scottish dishes on the menu. Would definately go back. However, this hotel caters for mostly older people and is quite.

Dreadful experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Upon arriving at the hotel we were impressed by the frontage and looked forward to the continued luxury inside, we were to be very disappointed! Having booked a double room we were dismayed to find ourselves in a twin this was only the beginning of the problems. The en suite facilities were housed in what can only be described as a cupboard in the corner of the room. Upon opening the sliding door we were confronted with the smell of damp carpet and a "room" 6ft by 3ft. The shower cubicle was a fibreglass box and the shower inside dated from around 1974! The furniture in the room was broken flat pack with doors and handles hanging off. All in all, not what we expected to find. We immediately complained to the manager and were told there was nothing she could do to help us. We decided to leave and stayed at another hotel in Grantown for the weekend. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who expects a modern level of cleanliness and facility when booking a break.

Awful Hotel

from Mac99
Had the misfortune to book this hotel. This beautiful building is a disgrace inside. All communual areas and the room that they expected us to stay in were in need of a good clean and a lick of paint. . The room was like a cell and the bathroom was likened to something out of a 1970's style caravan. The bar did not open until 5 pm which was not a great start to our holiday. The staff were unhelpful until I phoned my agent to try and get my money back. There was no way we could have stayed there. Thankfully we were moved. Another couple did the same and a few residents actually walked out. They need to shut this hotel down and totally refurbish it from top to bottom.

Great for quiet break.

from ladybird99
I had the pleasure of a one night stay here with my husband and young grandson. The triple room had everything we needed. Huge, clean and cosy room overlooking the lovely gardens and pond at the front of the hotel. Huge bathroom with bath and shower. Staff were unobtrusive but on hand if needed, and friendly and efficient. Meals were gorgeous, and excellent choice. Beds very comfortable, no noise at night apart from the odd car passing by, but nothing that would keep you awake. Beautiful surroundings and loads to do in the area. We can't wait to go back!

Relaxing break

My wife and I stayed there 13th to 17th Feb and had a great time.Lovely room and great food. The East continental waiting staff are a brilliant lot and nothing is to much trouble for them. They also seem to possess a great sense of humour which added to the enjoyment of meal times. I also thought the bar prices were very reasonable. We will return again in the not to distant future.

loved the food great staff and nice hotel

loved the food great staff and nice hotel well worth the money and is near the city centre about a 2 minute walk

Not very good

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here with an aunt and paid the extra for the 'superior' room. Nice big room with open aspect however the windows were quite dirty so the view distorted. No bathroom just a converted cupboard made into a cehap shower cubicle. Not ideal for an elderly sick aunt!! Furnishing very old but beds were clean. Food was woeful on first night but 100% better on the second so I can't say which is the norm.

Entertainment great if you are a middle-age American who all seemed to enjoy the kilted bagpipe player - but not every night.

We travelled into Aviemore and went to the Hilton for our entertainment - much better.

Staff friendly enough but if travelling independently (not on coach tour) be prepared to struggle with bags through tight door at top of stairs with no assistance.

Would we go back - NO!!!!

Top Local Tips for Grantown on spey

Hotel prices, even in pubs. This has got to be one of the most unreasonably priced places to have a drink. It may seem that the hotel bar's prices are a bit on the steep side, but a short walk up the road will reveal that ALL the prices are on the steep side.

OUTDOORS LOADS TO DO OUTDOORS HILL WALKING, WHISKY TRAIL, HEATHER CENTRE.

Kilt and Troos makers. One of the top three kilt makers in Scotland is in the Grantown high street.
