Really was the poorest service and poorest food we have ever experienced. Avoid this hotel, as Glasgow has many that are far better.

Terrific Thistle

from A TripAdvisor Member
Friendly staff, excellent facilities, breakfast was superb with added bonus of haggis and a great location just off main shopping area. Recommended.

Brilliant stay

Went to an awards dinner at the Hotel and it was fantastic.
Stayed in the biggest room I have stayed in outside of America. Very clean and tidy. Got great deal including Breakfast. Bar was really busy but service good considering. Pool was fantastic. Staff best ever.

Warm welcome in Glasgow

Fantastic central location for this great city hotel - not noisy but with easy access to all the key attractions. Surprisingly large bedrooms which were comfortably fitted out and led to a great night sleep - the comfy bed and thick duvet also helped.

Enjoyed a hearty breakfast and a delicious dinner, but most importantly as a women travelling alone on business, I was made to feel very welcome by the staff, it's amazing what a difference a kindly word or friendly smile can make, what I have come to expect from the people of Glasgow - I certainly wil be considering a 'Haste Ye Back' visit.

Good (rooms), Bad (food), and Ugly (building)

from adls
The Glasgow Thistle is a very 70s/80s style monolithic building. In other words, it's a pig ugly carbuncle on the face of architecture in Glasgow. The feeling of ugliness extends to the well-worn elevators and the dark, damp car-park ... though I must say I was grateful to have ample parking space on two levels of covered parking with security.

Checking into this hotel, you might be a little put off by the ugliness of the building. But that would be wrong. Because upstairs the impression is one of classy elegance with tastefully decorated and richly carpeted corridors, and large, impressive rooms. The room size was indeed generous, making up for the relative lack of any decent views. The furnishing was comfortable and relaxing. The working ceiling fan eats into the rather limited headroom, but is nonetheless a nice classy touch. The bathrooms were clean and looked expensively refurbished not so long ago. I really quite enjoyed sleeping here.

Leaving the comfort of the room, you'll find that exploring Glasgow by foot from the hotel is quite easy. Sauciehall Street and the Buchanan shopping complex are a short stroll away, and even Prince's Street is not far. If you're driving like I was, the hotel was well-connected by roads that allow easy access around the city. So the location was OK too.

Like several Thsitle hotels outside London, in-room Internet access hasn't reached here yet. But I was still thankful to be able to log-on on terminals in the lobby.

The service was OK. I can understand that with a big hotel with so many guests checking in and out constantly, sometimes the service is not as warm or personal as some would like. But I still found the service acceptable. I checked in slightly early on an apparently busy day, and appreciated the receptionist making a special effort to ensure I was accomodated in a nice room in minutes.

However, there certainly was one aspect of the hotel I distinctly did NOT like: the food. I did not experience some of the horrors at breakfast-time that some other reviewers noted (like over-crowding, not enough food etc). But the breakfast itself was as miserable as typical Glaswegian weather: damp, grey and nasty. But even that experience paled besides what was in store for dinner. The decor was meant to be avant-garde, but the atmosphere in this more-than-half-empty restaurant was more like a decaying old fairground. The service was either inattentive or couldn't-care-less. The food though was simply awful. You could tell the kitchen tried to cook up something that looked chic, but in the process forgot to factor in taste and flavor. Tasteless, plain and poor value overall. I wasn't surprised that the lady dining alone at a table nearby was shaking her head and sighing all the way through her meal.

Not at all a 4 star!

I stayed in the hotel for business on the 11-13th March. On the whole I found the hotel dirty. There were still breakfast trays in ther halls at 5pm in the afternoon, along with piles of dirty linen waiting to be collected. My room was large, but not very clean. The bathroom was adequate. Breakfast was the only decent meal of the day. The lunches provided were inedible, and on the last day we requested a packed lunch, I requested a wholemeal chicken and salad sandwich, with no butter, and I got a white bread sandwich containing only butter, mayonnaise and a smattering of chicken pieces. The service in the restarant was poor. We had reserved a table for dinner and arrived 1/2 an hour early only to be told that we had booked a later time and were made to feel like the staff were doing us a favour in sitting us early - the restaurant was over half empty at the time! On the plus side, the hotel has a lovely pool area and well equipt gym and the location is great. However, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again.

fair only

The four star rating seems a far too high. I stayed in a standard double, and the room was large with a huge bed. However, the bathroom was small and the bath and walls rather grotty.

In-room facitities were only fair: rather old tv, wonky remote control, kettle ancient etc.

The breakfast was average, and not very flavoursome.

A plus is the location: it's very close to the city centre and the shopping.

Overall, ok, but some problems.

Myself, husband and friends stayed at this hotel for a birthday celebration in February.

The location is superb for shopping and nightlife, the staff very friendly and accommodating and due to ongoing refurbishments;what were tired areas are now fabulous, i.e. the bar and lobby.

What struck me most was that staff were informative and helpful in view of the work taking place in certain areas of the hotel. Once the refurb is complete this hotel will be amazing.

Breakfast was exceptionally busy and we did have a short wait, though the food was great and the staff worked hard to minimize the wait.

If you want to experience the culture of Glasgow stay here.

Very average

Great location, but this hotel needs a good clean and reinforces the Thistle chain's position as an heir to the TrustHouse Forte brand which were overpriced hotels in need of refurbishment and 10 years behind other similarly priced hotels. The redeeming feature is that the bar stays open til late.

not to be recommended as 4*

We recently stayed at the Glasgow Thistle hotel.
Booked the courtesy coach on offer from the hotel but it never turned up.
No apology, staff with a couldn't care less attitude.
Breakfast Sunday morning complete chaos. Buffet bar empty for over half an hour and everything self service except the tea/coffee which we are still waiting for!. Queue for self service hot buffet and queue for self service toast all in same corner resulting in total gridlock. Kitchen looked dirty.
Staff walking around like the walking dead with no idea of what was going on. Complete lack of training evident in the staff.
Thought we'd catch the international rugby match on the big screen in the bar but the bar was closed for renovations(for a fortnight) no alternative except room service or the restaurant. First four star I've stayed in with no bar. No residents bar at night just very rude and arrogant night staff.
No sign of any manager throughout the weekend all in all a very disappointing stay. Glasgow however was great.

Room and bathroom very small. Worst breakfast I've had in Glasgow. Almost froze to death in reception while waiting to meet friends. May have been a nice hotel in the past but now needs work. I could not recommend it.
