Historical Traveller Reviews of Novotel Glasgow Centre Hotel

Very Smart and Efficient

from dalboy
Very clean and smart hotel, the room was a little dated and in need of freshening up, but it was large and comfy.

My only real gripe about the whole stay was the early morning call. I'd requested 7:30am for the 3 days I was there, 1st morning call was recieved at 6:20am, the 2nd day it was at 7:00am and on the 3rd day it was 7:30am, so they got there in the end, although it leaves you a bit grumpy when something this simple cannot be done correctly.

Staff were pleasant and courteous and I wouldn't have a problem staying there again.

good quality and good location

from ldea
we (2) spent a weekend there. it is 5 minutes walk to the centre and few hundred meters from the most lively area in town (bars, clubs and restaurants).

professional staff, quiet and clean rooms. decent english breakfast (buffet style).

70pounds per night, brakfast included.

Novotel Glasgow

from StudentMod
I am a great believer of speak as you find and I found the Novotel to be clean, comfortable with friendly staff who would go out of their way to please. My room was surprisingly large, well decorated and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and clean and had the TV reception piped through so you didn’t miss the news when having a shower. The food was great, evening meals well cooked tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfasts were good too, served with a friendly smile, and cooked to a good standard. I enjoyed my 3 day stay and would go back again with pleasure.

could do better

from MaryLC
Location: excellent - within walking distance of Sauchiehall St and comfortingly close to the police headquarters. Also limited traffic noise and well-insulated windows.
Decor: attractive and soothing. Would however have appreciated more lighting in the room which only has an entrance light, lamp on desk and fixtures on either side of the bed. A couple of cushions for the sofa, and an ironing board and minibar (found in Novotel in London) would also have been nice.
Cleanliness and maintenance: mostly good. The bathroom however had a strong smell of damp when I first entered.
Service: the member of staff who checked me in candidly confessed to having started work there only 2 weeks ago. Fair enough. I had requested a non-smoking room both in my booking email and at the reception desk and yes, dear reader, was given a smoking room. However it was quiet and did not smell of smoke (there was instead a strong smell of paint which was almost worse) although the corridor reeked. Said member of staff also confessed inability to credit points with my Accor loyalty card. Other members of staff efficient. Photocopies of maps given that were barely adequate - I picked up a free tourist map from an Internet café and wondered why the Novotel couldn't offer the same.
Eating: I had breakfast twice. The selection was quite good although the croissants one morning were all, literally, raw. They were swiftly removed and others put in their place. The plates were not all completely clean and some of the cutlery encrusted. Service mostly cheerful.
Facilities: a newspaper can be ordered and is brought to your room. The Internet access was expensive and rubbish. Avoid if poss. and find an Internet point in city.
Restaurants: staff will invaryingly direct guests to Sauchiehall St for eating out. If your tastes go beyond burgers and takeaways, try Bath St and parallel and perpendicular streets. The trendier bars etc. mostly seemed to be at basement level.
Overall my stay was reasonably comfortable, but the problems listed above should not be happening in a hotel whose rack rate is in the region of 120 pounds. Booking via the Internet advisable.

We will not stay at the Glasgow Novotel again

from CalgaryRose
We chose this hotel becuase it semed to be in a good location and we got a good online price. I looked at the comments on TripAdvisor before booking and thought they were generally OK but on having stayed there must now agree with the negative ones. On arrival there was a problem with our reservation, which the surly desk staff seemed unwilling to sort out. Our rooms were tired but adequate. Cleaning staff were intrusive. The area is central but not attractive. We wre glad we were only there for 1 night.

A good location, quiet but central

from TATraveller
We stayed between Xmas on a very good deal. It turned out that it's location was excellent - about 7 mins from the centre but in a quiet area with lots of nice restaurants close by (didn't need to negotiate the city centre itself at night).

The hotel staff were very efficient and friendly: the room the usual Novotel standard - not new but clean and comfortable - and breakfast was good given the price we had payed per night. All in all comfortable and very good value.

We had thought to stay at the Marriott but it was twice the price and when we saw where the Marriott was we realised we had chosen the better location for visiting the city itself.

Good option for the city

from Ivanorris
This is an standard Novotel hotel, do not expect more than that. Rooms are OK, location is good and the staff does the job very well. I missed some animation in the zone because the area is maybe very quiet but not far from the shops and clubs. Anyway I would go to this hotel again in Glasgow.

useless manageress !

from A TripAdvisor Member
not a bad hotel on the whole and easily accessible to the clubs and shops ... but had alot of hassle with the manageress in the morning, accusing us of vandalising an ice-machine in our hallway , when , in fact , its alarm went off at 4 in the morning waking everyone up including ourselves ! when we rang reception to complain we were told that it would be sorted soon. it wasnt turned off until 9 in the morning it seems that since we complained we were given the blame for it ! absolutey appaling on their behalf

Good Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in the Novotel on and off for about 9 months when working in Glasgow. The hotel is modern, clean and the rooms are spacious. The hotel location is great being just off suicchall St (spelling). The gym upstairs is a nice touch allbeit small and the sauna is useful to the likes of me who spent a lot of time there. Breakfast and dinners are good and the small bar at the corner of the hotel was good for showing the football. I got to know the staff quite well and even when I went back with my wife after about a year, they still recognised me. Very friendly bunch. Staff are generally European students over for a year or two's work. Good accomodation in the center of Glasgow.

Very dissapointed

from scottishdave
We stayed in the Novotel Glasgow on Saturday night and was very dissapointed. Most of the reviews on here were excellent which was part of the reason I booked it but our stay was not the best. The room was quiet dated and small and the bed was very uncomfertable, not much space for hanging anything up and the TV reception was all fuzzy.

The cleaners walked into our room at 8:00am, 10:00am and 11:30am each time knocking once then coming straight into the room! Now maybe during the week 8:00 isnt too early but on a Sunday morning! and 3 times! Could they not have looked and seen which rooms had checked out before entering! We found this rather un-settling!

Then at 7:00am the hotel had a carpet cleaner in which had a power washer and generator blasting out from the early morning! Could the staff not see this was waking all their guest up?

On the whole I was very un-impressed and would not recommed this hotel to anyone. We paid £69 as booked it on-line but the walk in price was £120! I would have felt robbed paying that amount of money for a very shabby hotel - avoid if you want a good sleep.

Top Local Tips for Glasgow

Take the train or bus! Driving in Glasgow is excruciating. My husband and I are seasoned drivers, and we were at our wits' end.

places to visit St. Mungo Cathedral & Necropolis, Kelvin Park, Museum (Kylie & Quentin Blake temporary Exhibition)

Glaswegians what really made my trip to glasgow special was the warmth and friendliness and helpfulness of the people. I asked for direction about 10 times in 2 days and was on each occasion given incredibly helpful advice about the area & transport & shops to visit as well as the directions - The people were delightful.
