Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Glasgow Hotel

Hotel was great but...

from clangers1958
I felt they were overbooked! Hotel seemed overcrowded and staff could not cope. My partner booked a double room for 2 and then he could not make it. We were still charged as if 2 were there. It was when I tried to book dinner was offered a sandwich! Yet we paid for 2 for Bed Breakfast and Dinner. I finally got into the buffet for 6.30pm my concert started at 7.30pm and was meeting a friend at 7pm. I had to stand my ground though. This is the first time I have ever had a problem at the Moathouse but am thinking of staying somewhere else next time. Mr.Rock (and partner)

Just OK

Stayed here for a night in Sep.2005. From the front the hotel looks great and the front bar and reception area is generally ahive of activity. However, the rooms are getting a little dated now, and the bathroom is definatley dated and needs an overhaul. The views from the rooms are great looking over the Clyde and SECC. As far as location goes, you are a little bit away from the city centre but perfect for the SECC or the armadillo. Just OK.

Receptionist booked us into wrong room, man undressing in room when opened door. Upgraded, only one light working in upgraded room and half drunk bottle of wine left in mini bar. Could do better!

The usual UK hotel stuff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel is out on a limb, down by the dockside - very convenient for the SECC, but once you arrive, that's it. Greeting by staff on arrival was cursory and it was clear they wanted to shift me through as quickly as possible. I had to ask where breakfast was served and if I could have a paper - OK, be unfriendly, but stick to your easily memorised scripts, folks. Public areas OK if a bit tired. Panoramic lift wouldn't let me out, other lifts looking dirty and a bit rickety. Room good. Iron delivered very promptly. Had dinner in the bar - understaffed, long wait, food just about edible. Breakfast good and with one of the two friendly members of staff on greeting service. Checkout efficient. Wouldn't recommend this hotel (except for a quick start at SECC) as the management seems poor and the staff are generally mechanical. Faintly depressing - your average British hotel experience.

Improvements in service

What an improvement !
Stayed here 2 years ago, service now really good, not like last time.

Could have been better

We stayed here on February 22nd, paid 80GBP for b&b. The room was 1222. The view was lovely. The staff were fine, we got room service, which was prompt and delicious.
The problem was the room itself..soap goo in the soap dish, soapy handmarks on the shower rail, cigarette burns on the wooden furniture, beer bottle opening marks on the furniture.'s very convenient for the SECC.

We feel it should be made aware to others who choose to stay at the Glasgow Moat House hotel that our experience with all staff has been excellent and if you desire to enjoy a more tranquil side of lively Glasgow and a view of the river then this is worth a stay.

Our double bed room was on the 7th floor and was a "Crown" room which means you have a few more complimentary extras to enjoy such as a bathrobe, a bottle mineral water, a can of Irunbru and a small bag of sweets. Unfortunately, our room was next to the lifts (elevators) so it was quite noisy at night and when we asked for our room to be changed because of the noise, they could not reassign another room. Although the view was nice from our window where you can see the river and the back of the SECC concert hall and convention center, the bathrobe was stiff as a board and itchy to the skin. The sheets on the bed were over starched and the toilet paper in the bathroom was skippy and definitely the cheap brand. We would recommend you make sure your room will not be next to a lift by requesting that you not be assigned one in advance before your arrive so they have to honour your request. It is an ideal location for a very short stay if you are going to a performance at the SECC where we saw the magnificent opera signer, Andrea Boccelli. Otherwise, we suggest you bring your own "soft and fluffy" towels, bathrobe and sheets if your skin is sensitive and you don't want to chance experiencing a very itchy, uncomfortable time with their sheets, itchy bathrobe ...oh and bring your own "soft & luxurious" toliet paper too if you don't want a rash you-know-where there too. Breakfast was included but the quality of freshness and taste was poor. The orange juice was undrinkable because its acidity. Also we complained to the manager that the public toilets near the cafe had an unbearable stench which we believe was due to poor plumbing and management responded they would look into it.

We agree with other reviewers that the hotel could do with some modernization and a "facelift" to make its appearance more inviting and attractive because although our room was clean, it looked dated and dull in its appearance.

dissapointed visitor

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having stayed in many hotels of this type around the world, I have to say that I was dissapointed by the standard of cleanliness and service from this hotel. I fail to see why a four star rating should be granted to a hotel if the facilities provided are not maintained to a particular standard. The rooms are comfortable enough, however the standard of preparation leaves a lot to be desired, hair and grime from previous users in the bath, accumulation of mold around the bath sealant, again hair, dust and nail clippings around the edges of the bathroom floor. The decor will not repair itself when damaged and you get a feeling this is not being kept on top of, light fittings in the elevators having bulbs or parts of the fittings missing. The bar area in the evening was relatively sterile in its lack of atmosphere and when more densley populated as it was later in the night then the smoke level rose significantly. The staff where efficient enough but a little too familiar for my taste as I do not appreciate being adressed as "mate" or "pal" when being served at the bar or reception. I suppose this could be regarded as part of the 'Glaswegian charm' however, it comes across as less than proffessional. The location of the hotel is ideal for access to the city by rail, and taxi (I would suggest the latter although more expensive, it saves wading through the litter and detritus around the railway station and walkways from the hotel to the rail link) and was sufficiently out of town to be relatively quiet. If you are visiting the SECC then there is no more convenient venue, however if you are just visiting Glasgow then there are far better hotels at more reasonable prices.

This place is awful!
Apart from the room needing an overhaul (decor as well as basic maintenance) the remainder of the experience left a lot to be desired.
I ordered room service for breakfast, eggs and toast stone cold, cereal but no cereal bowl and what tasted like orange juice spilled over my cooked breakfast.
Key cards don't work properly in the doors (on one side of the building apparently) so I was locked out of my room twice during my 1 night stay.
Colleagues say the restaurants were awful and room service dinners worse.
Staff on the front desks bordering on rude.
Steer clear if you can.

Oh Dear Oh Dear

so disappointed by my experience of this hotel. grubby was an understatement. the sheets did not fit the bed, at one point I woke up in the night with my head on a raw matress. I asked for a double room and was given a twin room, when I asked to be moved, I was given another twin room! coffee making facilities - filthy. bathroom, grubby, blankets, grubby the whole thing, grubby!
I was so dissapointed by my experience of this hotel that I wrote to complain. very poor response!!
My advice - stay somewhere else!
