Our special time away was decided upon by their reputation, but we feel they are riding on past success. The Calamari was rubbery and certainly not fresh, the pate was straight out of the fridge and sliced, but did not spread. The rissotto was like a stodgy rice pudding with pan fried fish placed on top, and the side salad was again straight out of the fridge. The fish was fresh at one time, but it had a far too long association with a freezer to be anything but bearable. If I were told the chips were frozen, I would not be able to disagree. All the food was so bland and unseasoned, that Gordon Ramsay would end up in tears. It is a shame that with such a great reputation and a fantastic looking menu, that the chef(s) have become so reticent and lazy, and that the quality and freshness of the food has been sacrificed. As for 6 pumps supplying a range of Real Ales, 2 options did not pass muster. On a positive note, the room was well appointed, modern, clean and tidy. The area is fantastic, the hotel is great, but just take our advice and eat elsewhere.

Top Local Tips for Gairloch

Scenery Well worth a visit, but a car in my view is a paramount to see the beautiful country.

Places to visit If in the area you have to have a trip to Torridon an amazingly scenic area, Ullapool nearby (an hour or so away) and from there go up to Lochinver via Assynt (again very scenic) and come back on the Achiltibuie road. In the summer the boat trips are great and a trip out to Redpoint is well worth it. And the out of the way beach at Mellon Udrigle worth a visit in sun rain or blowing gales!!

road trip from gariloch If you are looking are a great scenic drive with a great lunch at the end of it head for Applecross. You can approach it in 2 ways depending if you are heading on from Gairloch to Skye or back to Gairloch. The mountain road is not for the faint hearted but this adds to the excitement of the journey and you will be spoilt with amazing views and scenery. Be wary of sheep and odd highland cow on road so definitely keep the speed down. The Applcross Inn has won best seafood inn for 2007 and I can see why. Our fish melted in our mouths and even in November we were surprised how many people were there for mid-week lunch so get there soon before word spreads. My husband advises is pack in summer as popular with over seas motor cyclists enjoying the scenic roads. You can go for a short walk round the Applecross House estate then pick which way you want to head back - both roads giving scenic journey.
