This was our second visit to the Roxburghe and as with our first visit we found the staff to be more than welcoming, kind and friendly. We will most definately return for a third visit.

The staff was courteous; our room was fine; breakfast display one of the prettiest we have ever seen. Most important: The young manager of the Roxburghe personally helped me by driving me in my rent car around the downtown construction maze into your already full garage. Not since 1949 in the midst of a taxi strike when the doorman of the Pierre Hotel took me in his car to Grand Central to catch a train for my Boston prep school have we encountered such considerationby hotel staff...and we travel a lot.

No complaints; Super location
from Pfadfinder
This hotel was booked for us by a tour company with which we did a 7 day tour of Scotland. Although we had some misgivings due to some of the reviews found here, we nevertheless decided to book our extra night in August 2004 in Edinburgh at this location.
It worked out fine. No complaints at all.
As others have pointed out, the location is fantastic. The Edinburgh Festival book fair was at our front door. Shopping on Prince St. and George St. footsteps away. Three great cafes/restaurants across the street. The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle 15/20 minute walk. Waverly Station was a 10 minute walk.
Our stay was during the Edinburgh Festival and Tattoo, so I had some concerns about my extra night's reservation being screwed up - no problems. The reservation was there and we stayed in the same room we had for our tour.
The room was satisfactory. Even had a refrigerator - as well as the usual 4-star accoutrements - iron, pants press, hair dryer, and coffee maker (hot water pot - not a brewer). The room was clean and the beds were comfortable.
As was typical in the four other hotels we stayed in on this trip, ventilation left a lot to be desired. No air conditioning (the apparent norm is Scotland). The one window certainly helped, but with no air return or cross ventilation, the room was warm and stuffy.
The staff was helpful, if somewhat officious (slightly less warm and friendly than the other hotels in which we stayed). The concierge was helpful and friendly.
The lifts all worked :-)
The breakfast buffet was good.
The hotel was not cheap, nor were meals - but it was Festival and Tattoo time - and the rates were not out of line of others in which we stayed (although our last night was spent at the Glasgow Airport Ramada - where the room was comparable but about 40 percent of the price of the Roxburghe.
All-in-all, great location, high price, but no problems..

Great Hotel and great location

My new wife and I spent July 23rd to Aug 1st at the Roxburghe and loved the hotel and staff. I also read the reviews posted here and flew out a little concerned. The hotel was all that we were looking for and more. The rooms were well equipped and the newer gym and pool made it complete. This is a great downtown location.

Great location, Great service

My young daughter and I stayed here the other weekend. After I had booked, I checked this site and was very put off about some of the other users reviews. Panic over, when we arrived, we were allocated a lovely room (with net curtains). As our rate didn't include breakfast, and I balked at paying £12.50 for my child to eat egg on toast, the receptionist recommended a nice little cafe round the corner. Excellent. The pool was fantastic, and all in all we had a very enjoyable time.
On returning home, I found that I had left my mobile phone charger behind. Not a problem, 2 days later the Roxburghe sent it to me recorded delivery. Now, thats what I call service!

Poor reviews are unjust

My husband and I were confused at the poor reviews the Roxburghe received. We spent 6 nights in late May 2004 and everything was lovely.
Yes, the main lift was broken but anyone staying on the 4th and 5th floor where no lift was available your bags were taken up for you. If you're on vacation - walking up and down 2 flights shouldn't present a problem considering the amount of walking you'll do sighseeing. The staff was very friendly, helpful. The room was large with a king sige bed, clean and the bathroom was very large, modern and clean. The huge delicious English and continental buffet breakfast kicked off the start of each day. Centrally located, quiet. Yes, no air conditioning but many hotels in Europe do not have air conditioning and if you need AC check the hotel prior to booking. We booked through a very inexpensive travel site and we were not not given a bad room because of our low rate. A 4 - 5 star hotel in Europe is not the same as in the USA. Don't expect Trump Plaza or a Hilton. Nor is a Radisson in Europe the same in the US.
Yes, we would definitely stay here again:)

Excellent hotel, great location

I made the booking via activehotels at a extremely good rate and was prepared for a substandard room, having read previous reviews on tripadvisor. However, the room was very attractive, clean and well equipped. OK, the lift wasn't working but I didn't find this too much of a problem as the directions to rooms were very clear. I found the staff very helpful and friendly and overall found the hotel excellent and in a great location. I would certainly recommend it.
Appalling place

An unbelievably poor hotel. The weekend I stayed the main lifts had broken down and stayed that way for 3 days. I was on the 5th Floor. The tiny backup lift only went to the 3rd floor, and from there you had to follow a poorly signposted convoluted route to the floors above. When I was lost initially, the concierge was extremely reluctant to come up and show me the way, and NONE of the nearby household staff knew how to get to the right floor from that lift!
The fridge in the room did not work, and several calls for them to fix it went unanswered. The 5th Floor also has two large terraces with inviting views but stayed locked the entire weekend. The room itself felt old and smelt of years of smoke, even though it was supposedly a non-smoking room!
In general the staff were rude or borderline incompetent. Great location, but awful hotel. Stay elsewhere.

Is it a Four Star Hotel?

1) Our room did not have any net curtains
so people across the street can see what
your doing!
2) The hotel has no Air Conditioning! We asked for
a Fan but there were all used by other guests,
but we were very lucky to get one a few
hours later
3) The Lift wasn't working, so we had to walk
5 flights of stairs to our room, bit difficult if
you had loads to drink!
Thats about it!

We bought a 2 night trip as a present for my parents. We joined them for lunch on the second day and could tell that they were disappointed in their room. When we went to view it we were embarrassed - it was a rather sub-standard attic room with 2 sky light windows and no view! It was clear that anyone taking up a special offer break was put in the 'sad' rooms - there certainly seemed to be much nicer ones on offer!
Excellent

The hotel was excellent. Very nice room indeed and was very, very clean. Good location. Thought the hotel staff were helpful and the breakfast, which we had delivered to the room, was the best we have ever had! All in all, a very enjoyable break.
