We were looking for a hotel to stay during the Festival and booked the Ritz through late rooms - the price compared to other hotels was very reasonable, it was central for where we were going, the room was clean and tidy and the staff very pleasant.

As a gay, I found the service in this hotel second to none. Reading The reviews, I was not sure about the place, however I was delighted to have stayed here. It is gay friendly and the shower was a joy for me a my partner to use. There was an abundance of light bulbs and not a rude man to be seen

Old fashioned type of hotel. Shabby chic not boutique.
Good value for money during the festival,
Ok they didn't have a night porter, as the person returned to their native homeland a few weeks earlier than expected but I was told this by www.visitscotland.com that the hotel wouldn't accept reservations that didn't know and accept that 2am during the week was as late as they could stay open. And that was fine, the last week of the Festival is the naff show week and I wasn't there for naff shows. No lift, but, they haven't been allowed to install. A lot less ££ than their neighbour across the road which wanted at least £30-£50 per night more for room only. If you are expecting the Ritz in London transported in Edinburgh for as little as £90 a night B&B forget it, its not that. Its a small hotel, that maybe has lost its way, but the rooms are clean, staff ok ( I mean do you want someone kissing your backside? They were efficent) and hey give the poor Polish guy a break, he told me he volunteered to do 2 shifts a day for his last week in town as he needed the money for home time! They did their best & to be honest, being so central it was quiet. Maybe the previous writer would have preferred one of the more plastic hotels which we have a plenty state side which have nothing to offer but a flash lobby!

If you like the smell of dogs this is the place for you.
We stayed at this hotel during August 2005. The smell is the first thing that hits you as you enter the lobby. We then noticed the source of the smell
two yapping dogs behind the counter. Dont expect a warm welcome either. We were made to feel very uncomfortable immediately. The first thing we were told was that the night porter is only there until 2am and we had to in by then or we would be locked out. I am 46!!!! Why should a hotel tell me what time we had to be in? We had to leave one show early to be sure of our bed. The Ritz was probably a lovely hotel 80 years ago
unfortunately it is not now. It is shabby
..dirty wallpaper
..mould in the bathroom etc. We could not believe the prices
£90 per night
we booked it through the Edinburgh central booking telephone line..which was an efficient system
.BUT they should tell you that parking is not included
..you need to add 40p per 15 minutes to park on the street..for up to 2 hours
..a day park is available at the Train station £5 per day. The breakfast is ok
..but we then learned why the night porter must finish by 2AM
he has to be up at 7 to serve ALL the breakfasts. He was an East European who though perfectly charming, was a little overwhelmed by the number of orders
.a few time he forgot various parts of our order! My advice....look somewhere else.
