Disappointing hotel in great location

The location affords some of the best views in Edinburgh.. from the front, at a £20 per night premium. Rooms to the rear afford no view and are the worst I have stayed in in Edinburgh. I have had one very poor room, one so so, and one pretty good. There is NO air-conditioning, which makes the smaller rear rooms almost unbearable in summer. The restaurant has great views, but the food is poor, the service low average. I only stay for the convenience of the location.. but maybe this week will be my last stay there.

From what I can remember the hotel was fine. Location was excellent but the entrance was easily overlooked. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but this was fine. Rooms were clean and comfortable. I have tried to re-book this hotel from time to time but have always found it full. Must be popular.

Very well placed, but our room was very small, dark and noisy from the kitchens at the back. We changed to a room which was on a higher floor but still noisy.

Wat a way to bring in the New Year

Stayed for a three night break over New Year and must have had the best location in the city. The views are stunning. The staff were very friendly and informative on the city. Breakfast was great and great views from the bar and restaurant. Would definately use this hotel again for a break in the city centre.

I booked a single room for 1 night for ony £55 with breakfast, which is good for Edinburgh. The room was on the top floor with a brilliant view of Princes Street Gardens and the Castle - I didn't have to pay the extra £20 on offer at the reception desk for a Princes Street side room. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Would definately stay here again. Book through Ramada's site for cheaper deals.

We stayed at this hotel for three night in September 2005.

We were unfortunate to have rooms at the back overlooking Marks & Spencer's airconditioning plant. The ill fitting window did nothing to lessen the noise of this machinery, although it did quieten down a little from 11pm to 4am.

The pipework radiator in the bathroom had no facility for turning the heat off and after having a shower you would find yourself sweating again before you'd had a chance to dry and get dressed.

There was a sticky patch on the carpet at the bottom of the bed so you often had to go back to the bathroom and wash your feet if you stood in it.

The other rooms in the hotel, maybe at the front, might be better but this was the worst hotel room that I've ever stayed in

Today I have just booked a four night stay at the Ramada Mount Royal......I was able to book two 2night breaks together !! ie. four nights with bed and breakfast plus an evening meal for each 2 days. Great value at £129 for each break per couple.

The situation of the Hotel is the best, right on Princes Street with great views over to the Castle and totally in the middle of things. The rooms are very comfortable and large with a great shower in the bathroom. Breakfast is really very good, buffet style and delicious. Get a table at the window and watch Edinburgh wake up down below.

On Princess Street with fantastic views of the castle from the restaurant and bar (although you pay an extra £20 per night for the same view from your room).

Room was clean and comfortable. Very good selection at breakfast; didn't eat there in the evening. Staff were friendly and I had no problems at all while there.

All in all a good place to stay, but add the view and it's a fantastic place to stay.

This is a clean, well managed, unpretentious hotel in an excellent central location. Staff were efficient and couteous. Bedroom was compact, comfortable and equipped with TV, hairdryer, hospitality tray and even an electric fan. Essential toiletries and ample towels were supplied in the bathroom.
I agree with previous reviews that it is worth the additional £20 to book a room with a view over Princes Street and the Castle. I had a room at the rear of the hotel and the outlook was depressing! (See photo).

Food in the restaurant was of good quality and again staff were friendly and efficient. The bar overlooking Princes Street is a good spot to unwind.

I would consider another visit to this establishment.

GREAT hotel

I stayed here 3 nights in March and would absoulutely stay again. The location could not be better, so many things are in walking distance. My room was actually spacious, and although the decor was a bit dated, it wasn't worn or shabby, and the bathroom was very clean. I recommend getting a rate with breakfast included. While the buffet was good, enjoying the view of Princes St Gardens and the Royal Mile each morning while I ate was a real highlight.

It's so worth the upgrade to get the room with the castle view! We spent two nights at the Ramada Mount Royal and just loved having the great view. The hotel's right on Princess Road so it was very convenient as well. I highly recommend this place.

Upgrading has taken place - new carpets on corridors and stair case when we visitied in Feb 05 - also new decor to corridors and stair case.

Stayed here many times before and think it represents excellant value for money, providing ou get the rooms you booked! On my last trip here, on a Saturday in mid-November, I had book two double rooms through a travel website but was allocated one twin and two singles on arrival - not ideal for two couples on a romantic weekend away. Got the two singles changed to another twin, but both rooms in need of smartening up a little... Surely a hotel can't expect a couple to split up and got into seperate single rooms!!!

As long as you request forward facing rooms, you get a great view of the castle / city.

Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

steps at Waverly Rail Station If you are tempted to leave the station and walk up to Princes Styreet, beware the VERY long flight of steps up to street level. If you are carrying luggage you may be better off picking up a taxi on the station concourse.

Airport access It is tempting in a strange city to get a taxi to and from the hotel, especially for older or single travellers. There is no need for any hotel on Princes Street. The airport city express is parked just to the right of the exitat Edinburgh airport. Return ticket is £5, single £3. The driver calls out the hotel stops along the way. There is a stop right outside the Mt Royal hotel when arriving(Ramada sign outside it). The starting point of the bus route is accross from Waverly Train Station which is 3 min walk from the hotel. Depending on traffic you could pay up to £18 for a taxi either way. The bus is a cheaper and more efficient option.

Bus service get yourself a day ticket its great travel at 2 pounds- you can travel everywhere all day
