Historical Traveller Reviews of Prestonfield Hotel

We stayed at the Prestonfield the weekend of the Edinburgh 10K Road race - which my husband was running in.

The hotel was amazing. Very opulent and luxurious. Our room was gorgeous - a large luxury double - big enough for the both of us. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly and they really made the weekend extra special - taking a real interest in us.

Our meal in Rhubarb was fantastic.

We will definately stay at the Prestonfield again without hesitation! It was worth every penny.

Hate to spoil the party but...

.. our stay was terrible. The worst I have encountered from a hotel charging this much. Lowlights include but are not limited to: being told the wrong way to walk into town by a member of staff, being decanted the wrong bottle of wine at dinner, being blatantly lied to by a member of staff who, when confronted with irrefutable evidence to the contrary, made up more lies, which resulted in us waiting by the side of the road in the freezing Edinburgh weather for 1hr. The room was disappointing. We were in the modern extension at the back of the house where the ceiling are wallpapered to try to get that authentic look - it doesn't work. The bathroom was tired and dark. The mini bar was never restocked. The service at breakfast poor. The only good points were the ceilings in the original part of the house and some of the very amicable local staff. The restaurant itself is in a nice setting, although this wanes when you realise its not an original part of the house, but the food tries too hard. Our meals were overly fussy to downright nasty such as a horribly powdery crusted beef. When we left the hotel we made our complaints to the staff and were told that these would be passed on to the management. We have not heard anything since. Profoundly disappointing.

I did not stay at the hotel, but also have a need to post a review of Rhubarb restaurant. We had a party of three there in November 2005. It was absolutely the best restaurant experience of my life! The Inn was beautiful- especially arriving at night, driving up the long driveway with torches lining the way. The ambiance was so wonderful - regal, classy and just gorgeous. The food was so delicious, I could barely believe it. Particularly, the butternut squash with hazelnut soup - fantastic! The staff was amazing - helpful and so nice. I would fly back over there just for dinner in a heartbeat!!

The biggest WOW factor ever had!

I havent stayed at the hotel, but I thought I must write a review of its wonderful restaurant 'Rhubarb'. Pulling into the long sweeping driveway, with trees covered in glittering lights, and with peacocks asleep in the trees was enough to take my breath away. The place is like something out of Narnia, and has to be seen to be believed.
Once inside we were treated like royalty from start to finish, with excellent service without the staff intruding into our evening. Food was exceptional and adventurous.
After the meal we retired into a separate room for coffee and scrummy chocolates.
On our way out we sneaked into a side room where my boyfriend got down on one knee and proposed !! How romantic ! ( I said yes)
All in all a memorable fantastic evening in a memorable fantastic restaurant.
Thankyou Rhubarb for providing us with a small piece of Paradise.

has the wow factor indded!

We visited Prestonfield for my husbands 40th birthday in October. The champagne, peacocks, beautiful scenery, sweeping drive that we were met with on arrival, certainly met with our expectations. Our room was luxurious with everything you could need for a very comfortable stay. The bathroom was the only slight disappointment, a little on the small side for a deluxe room. We ate in the hotels restaurant Rhubarb on one of our nights, it was expensive and the starters were awful ( raw strips of lamb and a crab and watercress soup which was too salty). The rest of the meal was lovely, the pudding was too die for (assiette of rhubarb, little rhubarb mini-puddings).
The ambience was superb, candle-lit and cosy. We retreated to the tapestry room with our coffee and brandy.
All in all a lovely few days, the staff are friendly and helpful, we hope to be back!

First class

Booked the Prestonfield as a birthday treat for my boyfriend. From the minute we arrived, we were bowled over by the outstanding standard of service and the amazing decor of the hotel which was just as impressive as it looks on the website. The roaming peacocks and highland cattle made the hotel's setting all the more magical and the kilted hotel staff added that special Scottish something.

Our bedroom and bathroom were both beautiful and extremely well-equipped (the complimentary champagne went down particularly well!) and the bedroom had wonderful views over the countryside.

We ate in the restaurant (Rhubarb) which was stunning - the atmosphere was wonderful with the whole restaurant candlelit and the service and food were both superb. We rounded off our evening with drinks in the Tapestry room which is one of several beautiful sitting rooms at the hotel. Throughout our stay the standard of service from the hotel staff was exceptional and made for a truly five star experience.

We wouldn't hesitate to return to the Prestonfield and would highly recommend it.

Lavish Luxury

from A TripAdvisor Member
What can I say? Wonderful! As we pulled up to Prestonfield, it took our breath away that hotel looked even more impressive than in the brochure. So very pretty. WOW! is the correct choice of words. This hotel is no imitation of somewhere lavish to stay. This hotel is simply how the other half live.
It is right next door to Arthur's Seat and you will see peacocks and highland cattle wondering the grounds!
We decided to splash out and eat in the hotel restaurant, Rhubarb. The food was excellent if a little pricey (£100 for two) but the service was impeccable.
Something to watch out for is the cost of a taxi. We seemed to pay a different fare each time we travelled into the city centre but usually paid approx £5. We did stroll into the city a couple of times which took approx 45 mins.
For service & style, this is the type of hotel that others try to copy

Everything we hoped for

from BunnyJack
Having seen the wonderful website of this hotel and read numerous reviews we could hardly believe that the Prestonfield could live up to its reputation but it certainly did. I have to agree with everything the previous reviewer has written but would add that although we booked late and got the last two rooms available between Christmas and New Year we in no way felt that we had got 2nd best. We simply could not fault the hotel, food or staff in any way and only wish that every hotel good offer such incredibly high standards.

Exquisite Stay

Once we finally navigated the streets of Edinburgh and found the hotel, we were blown away. We were greeted by hilarious Highland cows along the drive and magnificent peacocks strutting around the entranceway! The bellstaff are in kilts in gray and black (so if you felt like wearing your tartan you wouldn't feel like one of the staff). It was a perfect Scottish flair. We hadn't even walked in the front door yet and loved the place -- and once we saw the wildly overdone and magnificent interior we felt like we were Alice In Wonderland and had fallen through the rabbithole. So beautiful and so much to look at. Already much has been written about the over-the-top red brocade and velvet opulence of the place and it is true. The service was perfect. Our room was gorgeous, romantic, dim and luxurious. We were served chocolate mousse and Pol Roger champagne on arrival. We reluctantly left our nest for one of the public rooms, where we sipped cocktails, enjoyed the fire and the ambience before moving to the dining room, Rhubarb. There we had a very expensive meal with very expensive wine, pretty much a once-in-a-decade splurge for us but well worth it. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The portions were surprisingly large, and beautifully presented. Dessert was heavenly - try the coffee-chocolate creme brulee. We retired for afterdinner drinks, coffees, chocolates to the lounge again for a few hours. Just perfection. Even the ladies powder room is a hoot - magenta, chandeliers over the stalls, as if decorated by a ten year old princess. Oh, and save room for breakfast, also served in Rhubarb. Just a lovely, peaceful, elegant and delicious meal. Loved everything about our stay. We are looking forward to our next visit to Scotland and will be back to Prestonfield.

Amazing time

from SamReynolds
My boyfriend and I decided to visit Edinburgh for a week during the fringe and we rounded up our stay with the most amazing evening of our lives!!!As mentioned it wasn't cheap but it was truly worth every penny and more. We were absolutely blown away by the entire evening from the fantastic service, the very drinkable and extensive wine list and the stunning food-all presented in the most romantic setting ever imagined. Although we were by far the youngest people there (aged 20) we were treated like royalty. I would highly recommend a trip although we only experienced the food, not the hotel but we are planning to start saving for another trip as soon as funds allow!

Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

Range Rover pickup To really splash out get them to pick you up in their luxurious Range Rover from the airport! Costs extra, but worth it if you want to blow someone away on a special occasion!

Arthurs Seat Get up early in the morning and climb up to Arthurs Seat - the air smells so fresh and the views are spectacular

comfy shoes Bring comfy shoes, even if they are not your usual footwear. Stick your nice shoes in a bag, you will need the comfy shoes, for walking around, if you intend to see the sights. If not, then taxi and dont walk! :0)
