A rude, incompetent and dirty hotel stay.

The Point Hotel in Edinburgh was awful - I've never returned from a holiday so stressed. The rooms weren't cleaned properly (dirty cups remained unwashed and in the room for the entire three night stay), the water didn't work for most of the visit and the staff would promise to bring things (such as water to wash out soap-filled hair) and it wouldn't turn up. Complaints were met with rudeness and ineffectiveness. A letter to the Manager was similarly unforthcoming. Don't stay here - it's dreadful.

The Point is a thoughtful, intelligently and distinctively designed modern hotel, with excellent attentive staff, a good restaurant and stylish bar. The breakfasts are excellent.
It is located near to West Port, which is a 'characterful' but up and coming area. It is 10 minutes from the city centre, grassmarket and the castle and many other central sights, making it a great base to explore the city.

Recently stayed here over the May bank holiday weekend. The area surrounding the hotel isn't very good - numerous strip clubs! However, good location to get to everywhere of interest/shopping etc.
This is described as a modern contemporary hotel but both myself and my husband found it rather drab! Corridoors leading to the bedrooms were hideous.
Room we were given was extremely small, in fact one of the smallest I have had the misfortune to stay in - bathrooms aren't very light and the shower was hardly working and when it did it nearly blew you off your feet as it was extremely powerful!
The only redeeming feature was the breakfast - good quality and good selection.

A modern, well designed classic
from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't think that you will sit on the fence with your opinion of this hotel. In my view, it is a modern classic. The rooms are clean and bright, simply designed and refreshing. They do not fall into the trap of pretentious, dated or retirement home in their feel.
The restaurant served excellent well presented food and was reasonably priced. That said, the restaurant felt like a thoroughfare, although even this added further to the atmosphere of the place.
I would thoroughly recommend the hotel for its location, value for money, quality of food and in particular, the stay in a place that is just a little different from the mundanity of everyday life.

Does the job if you just need a bed.

After checking tripadvisor I was a little worry about the standard of the hotel we were going to, however we had got a good deal on an executive room over the internet so were willing to give it a go. In a nutshell I would say the hotel isn't up to the standard of a 4 star as the sign displays outside, but the beds were comfortable, it was clean and the staff friendly. Some of the reviews here say it was awful, dirty with unfriendly staff, which I didn t see. Perhaps the style of the hotel wasn't to the tastes of the reviewers as the lighting in the hallways is a little bright. One very positive point about the Point is that the shower was brilliant, very powerful flow of water!
Just a bit of fun for the eyes

Stay here if you're on a night out in Edinburgh, ok it's a little wierd but just go with it. Decent bar downstairs with reasonable staff and white russians at the bar...the rooms bright and fairly basic, a few clever design features - rolling walls & lighting, woke up looking at Edinburgh castle...missed breakfast
ve ever stayed in.

This can only be described as the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
Don't even contemplate staying in this hotel - you would be far better off in the TravelLodge/TravelInn down the road. No way is this a 3/4 star - 2 star at MOST. Hotel may have a 'smart looking' lobby ... but the moment you get past this it all goes horribly wrong. A 'executive room' with castle view = a room that is dirty, shoddy, with a bathroom that quite frankly you would not want to wash in. Expect fixtures and fittings in poor order - and a dank smell which hangs over the whole building. We were mean't to stay for 2 nights - we checked out and moved down the road. The manager did not even seem surprised. This hotel seemed full of time guests who were all looking disgruntled.
Don't go here.

Horrible Hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here on the 2 January 2004 and agree with all the negative comments on this site. Dirty tired old hotel - would not recommend it to anyone. Staff were vacant and unhelpful, rooms dirty and in disrepair. You can find a better hotel for less money in Edinburgh for sure. Give it a miss.
I agree it is just a porr dirty copy
from A TripAdvisor Member
I agree it is a cheap nasty noisy place, and the hotel is in a terible district,OK in the day but at night give me New York any day. And the design looks ok until you get close and see all the tired marks and dirt. Just look around an see that the designers have just copied hotels all over the world ( and not very well) It gets a three star or a four star in some books, but ig you are putting someone in there warn them its a 2 star.....
Very Strange!
from BOC68
What a strange place. We were told that the building used to be a furniure store. That still doesn't explain the strange lay out.
Virtually every expense has been spared in decorating and furishing this hotel. It has the feel of a garishly painted sanitarium. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful, but there was no sign of a bellman or other personnel to help with luggage. The reastaurant where breakfast was served is staffed with waiters who obviously believe they are above providing service (when they did condescend to notice you, it was service with a sneer). This cannot be attributed to understaffing since the breakfast is a serve yourself buffet and there is ample staff. Every evening there was a partially clothed woman in a box in the lobby. I can only describe the place as bizarre. On the positive side, it is within walking distance of the castle and only 2 blocks from the Big Red Tour Bus stop. There are several very good restaurants nearby as well as a coin laundry and an internet cafe.

Double booked

I am acutally unable to write a review of the room as we didn't reach it. On arrival we were told we had been booked into another hotel outside of the City Centre because our room was trashed by previous guests/flooded - 2 different stories from 2 different members of staff.
We eventually ended up in a hotel 10 miles away, which we had to pay for again. In the taxi going there the taxi driver asked us which story we had been given - apparently it is a regular occurence!
Madonna might have stayed there, but I would not recommend it.

TOO COOL FOR US..
from IrishStep
The motel was too austere and cold { new-age } "modern"MOD but the breakfast affair was fantastic and well appreciated by us weary travellers. who due British Air Strike we did not have sleep for 37 + hours, it was nice to sleep well alas, and awake by paige to a splendid array for energy to charge the day. Will choose another more Family Warm motel for next trip, with babies, and 8 adults. Sincerely.
Very Chic!!
from Theweeyin007
Having read the reviews on this website, i was starting to get a tad worried!! However, i was pleasantly surprised. The entrance and the lobby leading to the bedrooms were very impressive, however the bedroom kinda let the hotel down. The furniture did not match the style of the hotel - it was more traditional. Having said that it was clean and comfortable. I got a good deal on the hotel and paid 1/2 of what the hotel quote per room per night. I would return to the hotel only if i got a good deal again, i don't think it'd be worth paying full price. I would recommend others to stay in the hotel but, not to pay the full price as you can get it so much cheaper if you shop around!
