My partner and I spent two nights at the Macdonald Holyrood to celebrate my birthday and what an unforgettable experience it was!

The staff were lovely and made us feel instantly welcome and they couldn't do enough to help us with directions. We upgraded to the Butler's suite on the 6th floor and it's really, REALLY worth the money! Every evening your own personal butler hosts a canape and champagne event in the library on the 6th floor. It's all free so take full advantage! And the butler was so charming and even made me a birthday cake free of charge.

I'll definately be returning here. The location was fine as long as you don't have a problem walking 10 minutes for restaurants/shopping. All in all a wonderful experience.

Highly recommended. Great for older couples, younger couples and families. Also good for business types too as there is a large desk in the hotel rooms complere with modem connection.

We traveled extensively at that time and do not have any definite comments. The staff was very courteous and helpful except for one staff member in the restaurant. Was not bad enough to report on so did not get staff member name. The doorman was particularly helpful with directions etc. Sorry I can't remember his name either.

Probably the best hotel we have stayed in Edinburgh.
Excellent service and very good rooms.
We hope to come back another time.

We stayed at the Holyrood my birthday in Oct, we couldn,t fault it at all. The staff were very helpfull and the room was just right comfortable and roomy. Bathroom was clean and 4star standard. Breakfast is a must for all you foodies. We loved Edingburgh and the Hotel. We would recommend the hotel very strongly .

An Excellent Stay!

from flyerkites
Having already booked to go to this hotel, I saw the not so good reviews on tripadvisor. I contacted the Hotel and they assured me that there was no problem. They were right. We were upgraded to the 6th floor, and the rooms were lovely. We dined in the restaurant and the food was very good, and the service professional and friendly.( A special mention to Claire). You can sit in the lounge areas and have a drink while listening to the resident piano player, very pleasant. Rodney (the 'butler') on the 6th floor is brilliant and Ian the concierge is excellent at arranging the added extras which make your stay special. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel is in a great location, and the water in the bathroom is a slightly strange colour, but that is because it comes from a naturel well! An excellent stay.

Very Nice

June 2004. We stayed one night. 4 th floor. They have got great summer rates. Room spacious. Bathroom likewise. Clean. Comfortable. Friendly staff. The only problem being that they were not showing Sweden vs Denmark in their TVfootball lounge:)

Holyrood Standards Slipping

from A TripAdvisor Member
After a stay at the Macdonald Holyrood shortly after opening, I would have, and did, recommend the hotel to friends. I attended a conference at the hotel recently. The conference facilities were excellent and the break refreshments and snacks also excellent. However lunch felt like we had been transported to a completely different hotel. The glassware and cutlery on our table was dirty, the staff were sullen and (my biggest gripe) they removed empty plates from the table before all the party had finished their meal. The main course was nice but the sweet resembled something along the lines of lemon curd in a pastry case. Not pleasant. Although the hotel facilities for the conference were good, the restaurant was the hotel's downfall for me.

Lovely but.......

I have stayed in Edinburgh a few times and was offered a good deal for a Saturday at this hotel over the Bank Holiday.

The reception is lovely and our room on the 4th floor was plesant, bathrooms clean etc.

I ran a bath and when I returned to it I noticed that the water had a yellowish tinge to it. At first I thought it may be the lighting in the bathroom but was not convinced. also the TV has a speaker in the bathroom which cannot be turned off.

The restaurant was lovely and service all through the hotel was excellent. They made you feel special.........UNTIL
5am a fire alarm!!!!! I read this in previous reviews and shrugged it off.

We had to sit at the steps of the newspaper accross the road for half an hour whilst the fire brigade checked the hotel. Although I am happy that my safety came first but after a few drinlks its really annoying!!

I would reccommend this hotel for a stay in Edinburgh.

Dissapointed

from A TripAdvisor Member
Had a suite on the 6th floor complete with own butler (who was very un friendly) I requested to have balcony un locked but they could not find keys, airconditioning did not work so we had to sleep with windows open, only to be woken up at 0630 as the hotel is directly next to the new Scotish Parliment constructinn site. The bath water resembled a shade of Whisky. The breakfast in the Library was nice and plentiful but the butler was so unhelpful. All the other staff (especially chambermaids) were friendly. The hotel seemed to be somthing that it was not, for the amount I paid I expected that bit extra.

Will not return

Smelly

from The-Dobs
When i arrived i was impressed with the reception but when i got to my room it was very smelly, it smelt like eggs. I complained to Brian the receptionist who kindly moved me but the smell was worse. Brian could not give any explanation to why it was smelly, anyway i got moved to the 4th floor where it was ok, the staff where nice but i dont think i would stay again.

60th Birthday Celebration

from CarolSuffolk_England
With invaluable help from the hotel's Events Office, I organised a surprise birthday celebration for my husband. Along with several friends and family, we stayed for the weekend, and from the moment we arrived, we received first class service. The celebratory meal was excellent and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. I am very impressed, and will definitely return.

Always reliable

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have stayed here a number of times and always found it an excellent hotel. Away from the main drinking streets so you dont get disturbed at night by revellers, but only £3 or so in a taxi to get anywhere in centre of town (or a quick walk up a hill). Service always brilliant, especially the concierge and health club (which is free to guests). I have stayed here both on business and during the festival - top notch.
