I stayed here with my mum and dad this year. It was the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. We got sherry and chocolate when we arrived and the rooms were ace! Breakfast was off a menu, or exactly what you wanted and the best food I've had in ages !
The manager went out of his way to help you and I had a lovely weekend!
Can't be beat

I would recommend Kew House to anyone. My partner and I stayed at Kew House upon first arrival to Scotland, and after a very long journey, felt refreshed, welcomed, and quite at home there. It is immaculately clean, well furnished, and has a lot of little touches that really add up to a pleasing experience. The hosts are very friendly and incredibly helpful in every possible way. They go out of their way to make sure the guests have a great time, and upon arrival give out maps and basic directions in case travellers aren't sure of where things are. They also have great tips on where to eat, how to book activities, how to catch local buses, etc. Breakfast is included, and it is excellent as well.

If people are looking for 'ritzy' accomodation, this may not be for you. But if people are out for clean, cozy, attractive accomodation with friendly yet unobtrusive hosts, this is great. As Kew House was our first accomodation upon arrival, we were slightly disappointed with all the other accomodations when we left, as it just seemed that none could compare. This is a great place.
Great find!

I am not usually a guest house traveller, content normally to hide in a large anonymous hotel but my girlfriend thought it would be fun to try smaller places on our return holiday to Scotland. There were some ups and down but all were friendly. Kew House stuck out amongst the rest as it was immaculately clean, well presented and very comfortable. The hosts were really helpful and as a result we had three fabulous (and inexpensive) meals out while we stayed there. The location just a short walk West of Princes Street proved to be great and just far enough to walk off a bottle of wine with dinner. The really good thing here though, was being treated as an individual. Any questions we asked always had answers and the wi-fi was really handy (and free too). We'll be back!

A Great Place to Stay

from bigfozbelper_England
We spent two nights mid-October at the Kew House with an aged-parent and found that we agreed with the majority of reviews: the rooms were well-equipped and immaculate with touches that were much appreciated; advice about travel, restaurants and attractions was excellent as were the breakfasts. We felt comfortable and well-looked after.
'Putting the World to Rights' with Ian was very enjoyable and I will expect the 'heels' on the bread to be saved for me the next time we stay!
All-in-all, a most enjoyable stay which we will definitely be repeating in the near future. Shame about the weather, but you can't have everything!

A little gem...

You could not ask for more delightful, knowledgable hosts than Ian & Alan. We stayed at Kew House for 3 nights at the beginning of October and were just thrilled with the facilities and the location. I would highly recommend booking a superior room - that little extra space if you are staying for more than one night is wonderful. The rooms are modern & clean, with very comfortable beds - the best we had over the previous 11 nites in Scotland. Breakfasts are delicious & the downstairs lounge is a lovely place to relax - the free hi-speed internet was much appreciated!!! Although it is not a long walk into the city - maybe 10-15 minutes, the fact that there is a bus stop right outside the door is handy. Any questions you have about recommended restaurants, sights and tours are happily answered by the very knowledgable Ian.

Thanks for a great stay!! We hope to be back soon.

Perfect Home Away From Home

I couldn't have been happier with my stay at the Kew House. As soon as I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and given all the information I needed to get started exploring Edinburgh. The innkeepers were so incredibly helpful and friendly... always taking the extra steps to make my stay as easy as possible. My room was spotless and very cozy (including chocolates and sherry upon arrival!). The hotel offers free Internet access, and the breakfast was also delicious and a great way to chat with other guests (who also seemed very happy with their stay).

I'd definitely highly recommend this hotel to others and stay there again next time I visit Edinburgh. :)

Definitely Not disappointed

I have just returned from my fourth successive year visiting the Edinburgh Festival and my second year staying at Kew House. I had intended using these few lines to add my accolades for the wonderful attention paid to me by Ian and Alan on my visit and to say how much I enjoyed the accommodation, personal attention and spotlessly clean guest house they run. I can see from the comments made by “disappointed” that perhaps I should take a moment to explain to them that the whole point of staying at bed and breakfasts or guesthouses in the U.K. is to enjoy the differences they all have.

If I had wanted a Jacuzzi or a large tub, I would have shelled out more money and stayed at one of the many anonymous chain hotels the city has to offer. Personally, I like a clean, smoke-free environment, a comfortable bed, and even the chance to check my e-mails each day. Above all, though I like to be treated by someone who really seems to care that I am having a good time and enjoying myself.

I had another look at the Kew web-site after reading the anonymous guest’s comments (---) and found there was at least one picture showing bathroom facilities. The representation of this lovely B&B is accurate and fair. Speaking as someone who has paid a great deal more during the Festival, for a great deal less, I will be back to Kew House in 2006.

As for “disappointed,” I suggest you stick to the chain hotels if the lack of large bathroom is all you got from your stay at Kew House. I have no worries about giving my contact details.

Unlike most of the other reviewers I found Kew House to be disappointing. For the £115p/n we paid, We found the room to be clean but small with a bathroom the size of a cupboard. Maybe the other rooms are bigger, and I would definitely recommend checking before booking. For me, next time I go to fabulous Edinburgh I will be staying somewhere else.

Ian and Alan are phenomenal inkeepers. The house is very well-maintained (ask Ian to tell stories!), the rooms are inviting, and the hospitality is non-stop.

Don't let the location just out of the downtown core put you off. Access from the airport (via the Airport bus) and Haymarket train station is easy - a few flat, easy blocks -- and the bus stop to catch the short hop into the downtown core is just steps away. Hint: use Lothian buses, and get an all-day pass. Or, take the Leith Walk back from New Town if you want to trya lovely, relaxing, refreshing alternative.

While the hotel is on an arterial, it is amazingly quiet. Plenty of hot water in the shower. Very comfortable mattresses.

They served the best breakfast our entire trip (we went to the Highlands) - tattie scones and sausages and coffee can't be beat.

Do try the First Coast restaurant; I can't praise Alan enough for this advice.

These folks share a real slice of Scottish city life, and it greatly enhanced our stay.

Oh yeah, final hint to Yanks struggling with Euro-toilets: give the handle a good, brisk shove. Worked brilliantly. Or have Ian share his amusing tutorial with you!

This is my first posted TripAdvisor review; I wanted to let all the readers know that this website is really helpful. I used these reviews extensively in making decisions about our trip to Scotland, and wasn't one bit disappointed.

Glad we found it!

Our first time to Edinburgh. Got into the Kew House a bit by chance as our original choice was booked up. We're very happy to have been recommended to the Kew House. I can't echo enough all the rave reviews already posted about this place. Clean, modern, comfortable, friendly...all and more apply! Ian and Alan were perfect hosts, offering friendly & helpful advice, and entertaining us with a perfect wit & humour! A quick weekend was not enough of lovely Edinburgh, and we'll be going back to Kew House!

Lucky find!

from dolly1969
Following a miserably wet week in the Western Isles in a damp fisherman's cottage, we decided to move on to Edinburgh for a few days and booked Kew House for 2 nights after stumbling across the details for the Hotel in a Scottish Tourism Guide. Our experience at Kew House and in Edinburgh couldn't have been more different from that the week previous.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and the owner's, Ian and Alan, couldn't do enough to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We loved the small finishing touches - sherry and chocolates in the room on arrival - yum! The traditional Scottish breakfast was perfect as was everything else in the hotel.

The hotel is located just 1 mile away from the city centre and all the tourist attractions. Its an easy walk or you can catch a bus from outside the hotel - they run all day and night at few minute intervals. The hotel had secure parking too which was a rare find.

We didn't have enough time to explore Edinburgh fully - so much to see and do - what a fantastic City! However, if you're interested in history we would recommend visiting the Castle and 'The Real Mary King's Close' - both were excellent. The bus tour is touristy, but great and unmissable - it gives you a good overview of the City and its history, etc. The bars and restaurants have great atmosphere - our favourite was Priva on Leith Street (reminded us of those we've visited in Prague).

In short, we can't wait to go back to Edinburgh and Kew House and would highly recommend it to anyone contemplating a visit to Edinburgh.

A Lovely Twist of Fate

from A TripAdvisor Member
We tried to book a different hotel for our stay in Edinburgh. However a miscommunication led us to the Kew House. Some mistakes truly have a happy ending.

From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed. They offered suggestions on places to visit, recommendations of local restaurants and how to navigate the local transportation system. Having never been to Scotland, this was most helpful. When we decided how we wanted to spend our time they even helped book a tour for us and find bus routes to get to other locations we wanted to visit. We had a very early flight out of Edinburgh so they arranged for a taxi to arrive at 5:15 in the morning to take us to the airport.

The room was immaculately clean and nicely furnished. In fact the entire hotel was amazingly clean and comfortably furnished. The lounge offers guests internet access and a place to relax in a Zen-like atmosphere. So many of the little touches you get at the Kew House that you expect from a much larger and more expensive hotel really make the difference. Sherry and chocolates in your room upon arrival, fresh flowers in the entry hall and chocolates on your pillow each evening just to name a few. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual but none of the little details are overlooked. It is a completely non-smoking hotel which was such a relief to two people highly sensitive to smoke in a country full of smokers.

Should you stay at the Kew House take their suggestions for dining to heart. Alan and Ian aren't just great hosts, they KNOW where to get a good meal. Every one of the recommendations they made were superb and exactly as they described. The breakfast served there was enjoyable too. They offer a nice selection to choose from. Everything is cooked fresh to order and is delicious.

The only complaint I could find if pressed to find one is the lack of water pressure in the shower. Although I have heard this is common throughout Europe. However, with every other aspect of our stay so enjoyable this was hardly a point of contention. I only wish we had more time to stay and play.

it was so nice! the best!
