We only read the reviews posted July 2007 after we'd booked. Oh dear, we thought. Thankfully, since August 2007 this hotel has been under new management, and they couldn't have been more helpful. The hotel itself is being brought back up to a decent condition, the food was good, and we enjoyed our stay. I'd go back again quite happily.

We stayed at this hotel during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007. The price was exorbitant; and the hotel was absolutely disgusting! Wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the decor was old and carpet filthy. Bedspreads were ancient. TV aerial didn't work and thus only picked up 2 stations. The staff were slow and when we checked out a couple of minutes late, they made a point to let me know that I was "lucky" that I wouldn't get charged for a late check out.

Did not try the breakfast as it was only served during the unaccommodating hours of 8-9am, (which allows no time for relaxed sleep in during the weekend), and in fact am sure it would have been greasy and distasteful. Staff were also sitting in the common area, where breakfast is served, and smoking midday.

I will definitely never stay here again, and recommend anyone who's looking at this hotel to stay far away.

Filthy, Disgusting Hotel- Do Not Go!!!!

This has to be the worst place I've ever stayed while traveling. The room itself was disgustingly filthy. There were holes in the wall. The wallpaper was stained, moldy and peeling. The window in the bedroom had no curtain and there was tons of mold around the window frame. The bed linens were stained, tattered and appeared to be the same age as the house itself! The carpet was also stained and I felt like I couldn't walk around barefoot. I was so dissappointed with our room that I asked the staff to show us other rooms, but unfortunetly they were all in this terrible state. The breakfast was greasy and unappeatizing as well. I was glad to be leaving it after 2 horrible days only to find that they had screwed up our booking and actually reserved 2 rooms in our name and actually had the gaul to charge us for the other room since we did not show up!!!! Even after discussing the situation with them, they will not give us a refund either. PLEASE DO NOT STAY THERE! It is a horrible, filthy place and one where customer service is never a consideration!

Unfortunately after really looking forward to staying in this hotel I was throughly disappointed. The hotel is a beautiful old house but it is in disrepair and badly in need of decorating in the bedrooms. It was dusting with big amounts of dust hanging from the ceiling. The staff were ok from what we saw and breakfast was nice although greasy. When I saw the kitchen though as we looked at the gardens which were incidently meant to be beautiful and weren't we saw it was poky and didn't look very hygenic. I also noticed the staffs cigarettes lying about which isn't very professional. I have worked in hotels and this was more like a 1-2 star hotel. I wouldn't reccommend it.

Sightseeing Edinburgh has a large number of all year tour operators. There are about 3 Hop-on Hop-off services that goes around all the major tourist attractions. The city is relatively small, so you could probably walk to most of the attractions. On the regular bus service a single journey will cost a pound and you should have this in exact change. A day ticket will allow you onto any bus for any number of trips for 2.50.

Travelling in Edinburgh Best way to understand the city is by taking the city sightseeing bus ticket (hop-on & hop-off). You get to know the routes, the locations of the attractions, overview of the history of the place and it saves time waiting for the local buses. Taxis are cheaper in Edinburgh as compared to London, but one should really walk around if you really want to know a place. Getting lost in the new place is the best way to understand it! Lothian Buses are a good option too!
