Recently refurbished hotel. Public rooms are beautiful. Room small, but pleasantly decorated. HOWEVER, we did not sleep most of the night as noise from the street was horrendous and didn't stop until 4.30 am. Room was also cold and heating system was also very loud. Will never use the hotel again.

We stayed for one night having paid for a special Christmas package which included a luxury room and breakfast. This hotel is the most comfortable UK hotel I have ever stayed in and I never heard a sound from outside the room. The room itself was pure luxury with a huge comfortable bed. Breakfast was very nice too!

Excellent Service, Good Location, Rooms Need Updating

Stayed 2 nights the first week of January 2005 on the 4th floor of the east wing. We paid 72 pounds a night without breakfast. Our room was a good size, clean overall, except for the carpets that do not appear to get vacuumed, but the rooms definitely are worn and need updating (threadbare carpet, torn wall paper, beat up furniture). Our room faced the parking lot and during a ferocious wind storm remained relatively quiet and warm. On the other hand, our friends room faced the opposite direction and her room was drafty, noisy and cold from the wind. The windows rattled significantly. Keep that in mind if you visit in the winter. While the rooms were threadbare, the public space sparkles. We had a good experience with the bellhop service, concierge and dinner in the bar. The number of places to park is small, but our bellhop suggested we park overnight in front of the hotel with a meter to save $ and then move the car the following day. The hotel is located in a good position relative to shopping, the Royal mile and the Waverly Train station. Overall, if you can get a low rate, the hotel is a good value if you don't mind beat-up rooms. If you can't get a low rate, shop around. The Intercontinental would do well to invest in this property rather than let it run down.

FANTASTIC

It was our wedding anniversary, and I can only say it was FANTASTIC. We stayed three nights at the George InterContinental, and it was the most memorable stay in a hotel I have ever had.

Honestly, the hotel looks slightly tired, but I can't emphasise enough how caring and professional the staff are. They can not do enough to cater for your needs. It was a pleasure to stay in such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I will truly recommend this hotel, without hesitation, to all friends and family.

Not forgetting the fantastic location, in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance to everything. The Concierge are just full of useful information and helpful tips.

Thank you George Hotel for making my anniversary trip to Edinburgh so great.

Do Not Stay Here

I am not sure how they obtained a ranking at all as far as stars. From the outside the hotel looks nice. With luggage in hand there was no doorman nor bellman. My reservation was to be for 2 adults and 1 child, they only had the 2 adults, so they argued with me about this. We finally went to our room (in the basement). I have never been so disgusted in my life. There was mold on the walls in the room, fresh soap scum in the tub. The mattreses were so old there was no cushion to them. Called the front desk to tell them that is was not satisfactory, they stated they were full and could not do anything to help us, they could posible help us in the morning, but not for sure. I picked up the phone book and call the Balmoral, they sent a taxi for us and made us feel exceptional. AGAIN DO NOT STAY AT THE GEORGE IN EDINBURGH. Donna - Illinois

Tired, Worn, and with service to match

This was an interesting experience for an Intercontinental, granted the hotel is dated, worn, and generally poor - but there are hotels in a worse condition of a similar age. What I found to be worse for a hotel where the sales line is "we know what it takes" was the attitude of the staff, who for the most part where completely disinterested and indifferent to the point of being aloof and discourteous.

There are better hotels in Edinburgh if you can’t get a room anywhere else, maybe give this one a try

Please don't be fooled by the grand entrance hall and dinning room.
There was no parking available at the hotel so we were advised to find an alternative, that being an NCP, which is a pricy alternative.

The room we were given was disgraceful. There was wallpaper missing from the wall, the room was dirty and that carpet was threadbare.

After complaining we were given a much nicer room, but a smoking room that smelled disgusting.

Staff also seemed indifferent to out complaints.

We stayed in a standard room and the other reviews are right as far as threadbare carpet and the odd damaged piece of furniture. However, the service was good, the bar was very ambient and the breakfast buffet was excellent, with a wide range of foods for all tastes.
The staff were very helpful and friendly and the location of the hotel was ideal for shopping and sightseeing.
We paid £99, a reduced rate for a group booking but we have since realised booking direct with the hotel can get you a rate of £83 so check that out first.
All in all, we cannot complain about our weekend stay and would say, don't be fussy...a lick of paint wouldn't go amiss but it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment at all.

Excellent location, but beware of the standard rooms

This hotel did have an ideal location and a very friendly staff, but the standard rooms are awful. We were intially booked in a standard room in the hotel's west wing, but after one night in the shabby accomodations and sagging bed we requested an upgrade to a deluxe room. This made a huge difference. We got a beautiful room on the 7th floor of the east wing. It had a fantastic view and was much more up to the standard I would expect from Intercontinental.

It shouldn't be that such a fine hotel have such a mixed bag of reviews. But I learned from the staff (during a May, 2004 stay) that the hotel is up for sale - 25 million UKL. So there are no current plans to renovate guestrooms or other public areas.

My stay was very enjoyable and my standard room reservation got me a double upgrade to a room with a view of the Firth of Forth. If you look close you will see minor wear and tear. Staff & service was tops. Some of the staff is very young and some inexperienced. However, if they couldn't directly help, they would quickly find someone who could.

Before heading upstairs with your luggage, ask to preview your room.

I read the reviews on here before I went to Edinburgh. I can't say I was exactly looking forward to staying at the hotel because of some of the comments on here. When we got there we were upgraded immediately. The rooms were clean, nice view and not too bad. Yes, the furniture needs updating that was about it. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Brilliant customer service!

Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

Good traditional pubs For a good selection head to Grassmarket. The Last Drop is a particular favourite. On Royal Miile Tass and World's End are good, the former especially so for food and music. The Hebrides at bottom of Fleshmarket is also particularly friendly.

Tour Buses departing from Waverley Bridge. I definately recommend a trip on a tour bus which departs from Waverley Bridge every 15 minutes. Not only does it give you more of an insight of Edinburgh, but you can use your ticket for 24 hours from the time of purchase. Therefore you can hop on and off as many times as your like at the different attractions and locations you wish to see. Also at certain attractions if you present your ticket you will receive a discounted price!!

Arriving & Departing Book a taxi, airport to hotel & return. No problem carting luggage around, great.
