Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

airport coach bus Take the airport coach bus when you arrive at Edinburgh Airport... if you stay at The Clarendon, it stops directly across the street. Next door to The Clarendon is the Hilton so both of these hotels have easy access to this service. Buy your train pass (if USA travelers) prior to leaving, and take advantage of the wonderful train service--we even elected to take the train when we left Scotland down to Wales... a long but relaxing journey--which opened yet another area (including London) to roam around prior to a Manchester, England to US flight.

Money We went to the Bank of Scotland to exchange our money. They would not even talk to us...Our hotel suggested we go to a travel agent nearby and exchange our money. I gave him $1,000. US dollars and he gave me $400. worth of Euros. Turned out, we didn't even need money except for the bus and tips. Use your credit card. Before you leave, call your credit card company and let them know you will be using it out-of-the-country; otherwise, they freeze your card after the first time you use it. You can use your bank ATM card in theirs and get their money back.....but our bank in the US advised us NOT to take our bank cards out of the country. Mastercard & Visa is taken everywhere. US dollar is weak and food prices are high. We took snacks & breakfast food. Saved us a lot of $$$ and useful when on long walks.
