Historical Traveller Reviews of Edinburgh Marriott Hotel

Wow, what a hotel!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is fabulous. I stayed at the Marriott in September 2005 with my girlfriend. Before arriving I asked the hotel for a favour. It was my girlfriend’s 21st and I asked them to put champagne, chocolates and flowers in the room. They did this straight away, also just to point out, they don’t keep chocolates (Thorntons) and flowers in the hotel, so they had to send staff to buy them. The staff were brilliant and their customer service is excellent.

We had a nice big room, double bed was enormous. Room was very clean and the bathroom was of a good size. We used the swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi. It was brilliant! Breakfast was very good, lots of variety and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We used to take a bus right outside the hotel to visit the town centre. It’s about 15/20 mins away. Also, remember that the hotel has free airport transfers. I bought a Marriott voucher of ebay, you should do the same as I saved some money.

You won’t go wrong with this hotel. Enjoy your stay.

Wonderful facility

To start, I am a Marriott Platinum Member and I live in hotel rooms 100 nights a year.

This is a fine hotel. Yes the food in the lounge is expensive, but you expect that in a hotel lounge. A bus on the corner takes you city center Edinburgh for 1 pound.

AC is average but you expect that in Europe (and Scotland)

Rooms clean and quiet and I had two rooms with my family. Service and information from front desk is excellent. Only issue is no free internet for guests.

great hotel

Perrrfect place to stay

it is the first time that I stayed in a Marriott Hotel, and it was amazing. A porter stood by me as I was checking in to take me to my room and carry my luggage. The room and all it's facilities was great. The staff was bending backward to help each time we needed something. Prices were not excessive to get room service or anything else. And I also liked the scottish touch with the men in Kilt. The whole experience was just magnificent.

I liked it, not perfect, but better than most in Edi

Ok, make no mistake this is typically Marriott so I expected a hotel with those standards - largely I found it typical of Marriott which is good in my opinion. Compared to downtown Edinburgh hotels, this hotel was in fact a godsend. Beaware however, that the third floor rooms (or at least the one I was in) don't offer fully flat windows - a common problem in all Edinburgh hotels I have stayed at. Instead you get some ridiculous slanted window more like a roof light type. I wasn't happy about this. Also, the bath water temperature was warm at best - again falling short of Marriott standards.
Food was very impressive - try the burger - it's simply awesome and not over priced by hotel standards.
Overall this is the best hotel I have stayed at during my numerous visits to the city and I'll probably choose this hotel over others in future, unless I find somewhere without those damn roof windows! You could do a lot worse than stay here (aka Roxburgh, Best Western and The Point).

Give the Edinburgh Marriott a miss....

Stayed here for 1 night but am a repeat guest - not anymore!

The rooms really are getting a bit tired now and offer no complimentary water, have a very small bathroom and are dark and unwelcoming.

The real problem with this hotel is the breakfast - although there is a lot of choice, the quality is poor. 3 inches of water in the scrambled eggs, microwaved bacon, cold and hard pancakes and to top it all a self toast machine that either undercooks or burns your toast. I waited so long to get a decent piece of toast that in the end my inedible breakfast had gone cold anyway.

Not up to the standards I have experienced in other Marriott hotels in the UK and around the world.

Brilliant !

lovely Hotel, we stayed here for New Years Eve, its about 4 miles from princess street but there are loads of buses to catch with a bus stop just outside the hotel, which was very handy, the buses were cheap and also after 12 clock at night the buses are free !!!! bargin.

The rooms are massive with everything you want in it, oh and the beds are really big too !

We arrived back from princess street on New Years Eve and they welcomed us with free soup or sandwiches which i thought was a nice touch ! The staff were very friendly and very helpful !

When we go back to edinburgh we will defiantely stay there again.

Overall Very nice hotel !

Friendly service, bit unorganised though

We had a good stay here, were upgraded from an executive room to a junior suite. The room was lovely, what you'd expect from a Marriott, can't comment on the standard rooms though. Good breakfast in the executive lounge which is included in the rate of executive rooms. Shame about the advertised canapes, deserts and cocktails in the executive lounge though, staff seem to have forgotten about this. The one evening we asked about this, there was some confusion but they did put some things out in the end. Tried to book a massage via reception who referred me to health club who then gave me a mobile number to phone. Turned out the lady didn't work on Sundays & Monday. Would have been helpful if I'd been told this by reception straight away. Overall a good stay in a great room but some overall organisational problems. Friendly staff.

Hi all, just back from a weekend here and thought it was lovely.
The room was a great size and was very comfortable, well equipped and clean!
The leisure facilities were also really good.
We didnt use the restaurant at any time but breakfast was great, such a good choice and plenty to go round.
The staff were extremely helpful and polite.
Cant fault the place, will stay again!

We loved visting Scotland. Every person we meet from a gas station attendant to bridge toll person was truly warm and very friendly.
The food and sightseeing were breathtaking.

The Marriott Hotel was not "Marriott"...........

The "Club Level" signage states that Breakfast begins at 06:30.
The first day we were there, breakfast was presented at 07:50.
We called the front office about the late service and "The Manager"
came into the Club Room to set us straight......
"Club Level" signage states dessert in the evening. This did not
happen. Bottled water and soda were never replenished.
The day of our departure, we did not receive the two wake-up
calls we had placed the night before. The front office people
told us - we did not place the wake-up calls.
(see the attached photographs)

Take Bus #100, from the front of the hotel, to get into Edinburgh.
It costs only 1 pound. Make sure you tell the bus driver on your
return that you are going to the Marriott. If you do not speak up,
you will be charged 3 pounds instead of 1 pound.

Make sure in Edinburgh to purchase tickets in advance for
Mary King's Close. This is a great attraction.

In the Highlands, if near Aberfoyle, eat lunch at the Mill Store.
Huge bowl of homemade soup and fresh baked bread only 3 pounds.

We were very pleased with the small town of Fort Augustus on the
southern tip of Loch Ness. We asked the captain of our tour boat
for a lunch recommendation. The Lock Inn & Gilliegorm was a WOW!
Management Response from A TripAdvisor Member
Since this review was written in October 2005 we have recruited a guest relations team (of 3) of which I am the manager. Me and my team are based out of the Executive lounge and have now established a high level of consistency around the food & beverage offerings, both for breakfast (which now includes a small selection of hot items) and for the evening hors d'oeuvres and desserts. If you are staying in an executive room you are entitled to have access to this lounge where you can enjoy this breakfast and hors d'oeuvres with our compliments. I would invite any tripadvisor member to come and see for yourself what a nice environment the lounge has become!
