Historical Traveller Reviews of Edinburgh City Travel Inn Metro Hotel

not bad but not great location

from traveller089
stayed 2 nights at this hotel with my husband and 2 other couples for weekend without kids.hotel is modern and clean with helpful staff. rooms are what you would expect from standard hotel.the area around hotel is a bit run down and if we were to go again we would choose hotel on other side of city- princess st/george st/queen st as this area is much nicer. we had booked 3 non-smoking rooms but were given one smoking room which stank.although staff were sympathetic the hotel was full so we could not change.if u really want non-smoking room make sure you state this when hotel rings to confirm your boking just before your stay.

Cheap but slow service and thin duvets

from sam1983
We were just staying in Edinburgh one night for a weekend getaway. We choose this hotel as it was cheap and located not to far from the shops and castle. However upon arrival we were informed we had booked a smoking room,we hadn't! However the girl at the desk went to sort out the problem straight away. We had to wait for the room to be cleaned and sat out in recepetion for 30mins before being seen again. The room we got in the end was adequate however we were obviously located on a corridor with smoking rooms as outside the room absolutely stank. Another issue we had was the thiness of the duvet on the bed and the heating in the room. Edinburgh in November is pretty cold and the heating wasn't adequate to warm the room and the duvet was so thin that I ended up sleeping in a jumper.

Excellent stay

We stayed here for 3 nights in early February and this was the second time I stayed here. Good location within 15 min walk of the city centre. Friendly staff. Clean. Bedroom was on the 4th floor and the while the windows looked a bit strange because they were quite narrow, the bed was very comfortable and I didn't notice traffic noise (noise would probably be more noticeable on a lower floor). Restaurant has improved since last time I stayed and we had 2 very good pizzas one night which were reasonably priced compared to restaurants in city centre. Would recommend to anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune.

Great base for exploring Edinburgh

Second time at the PTI Morrison Road, and would highly recommend it for value for money. I regularly use this chain for business travel and haven't been disappointed yet. The rooms are a good size, are clean and the parking is good value at GBP6 for 24 hours.
The restaurant isn't bad - I used it this time as I couldn't be bothered to go looking for an alternative, although there's a few places at Haymarket, and you haven't got far to go to the West End. My only gripe about PTI is the cost of breakfast - I normally don't bother, as I think it's overpriced for what it is, and can normally find better elsewhere.
Overall, it's a great hotel for business or leisure. Word of warning - like all Edinburgh hotels, it's mad busy during the Festival, and will get booked up very quickly. I managed to get a room there last year, and the restaurant was struggling to cope with both breakfast and dinner during August.

Great Value Hotel in Edinburgh

from alicetravels
I planned a trip for eleven family members to Scotland and based my hotel selection on the reviews from this website. The Premier Travel Inn was a great value for us. We were able to spend more money on our travels outside the city but spent six nights at this hotel. We found it comfortable, clean and an exceptional value. We ate a lot of our meals in the restaurant/pub and were in walking distance of other restaurants, the train & bus station and more importantly an internet cafe! The rooms were large (especially in comparison to the B&B's we stayed in outside of town). If you don't like traffic noise you must ask for a room on the parking lot side.
Staff was very friendly and we were very pleased with our stay at this hotel. We loved Scotland and plan to return very soon.

Geordie value

from Grandestpappy
Excellent shower. Very clean room and all corridor areas. Reception staff friendly and polite. Breakfast on both days was first class and certainly value for money. Room 604 can be noisy at times; it's next to a service room( clattering of trolleys, sliding doors, lifts, etc.)
All in all, a good place to stay and within ten minute walk of Princess St.

great stay

from Pisces_Iscariot
Couldn't find a thing wrong with this hotel. The staff were friendly, pleasant and helpful. the bar was open late and was very reasonably priced, there is just a short walk to the city centre and the room was comfortable and well equipped. The only thing I would like to see an improvement on is the range of vegetarian food. This was a little sparse but with Hendersons just down the road, not too much a problem!

Good room

from hsnfl1
Reception was very good, but busy. The room was more than adequate and had a great shower. The tub is quite high to step in over the rim. Location was okay, but not too close to Princes St. and Royal Mile. Get your walking shoes.

Very pleasantly surprised

from pvg
Just got back from a 4 night stay at the PTI in Edinburgh (Morrison St). I was on a quick visit with my parents who chose this hotel and wasn't sure what to expect since they picked the spot and tend to stick to inexpensive budget hotels (when I travel alone, I prefer higher-end hotels). I was pleasantly surprised. The building looked quite new, lobby and restaurant were simple and modern, and the public areas were extremely clean. While waiting for a taxi, I saw a staff person cleaning individual floor tiles and all around the edges of the floor bases with a small cloth.

Check-in was pretty quick and easy. Front desk staff people were friendly, some more than others. They had a little bit of trouble when we asked for information on church services. It would help if they had pre-printed materials to hand out or in the rooms with info like this (i.e., churches, bus routes, bank/ATM, grocery, laundry, etc.). Taxis can easily be called using a direct dispatch phone; we never waited more than 5 minutes for one.

The room was quite spacious, with a double bed, table and two armchairs, desk, wall mirrors, hair dryer, tv, and wireless Internet. The bed was adequate, although by the end of the stay, I was ready to get back to a "real" bed. Plenty of pillows and towels; even though they ask you to hang your towels to reuse, mine were replaced every day.

I had some trouble initially with outside noise from my room. I was situated facing the carpark on the 4th floor near the pub end and the trash bins. The pub was noisy til very late (1-2 am). Glass recycling was handled at 8 am on Sunday, trash bins were filled (and lids slammed) at 6:30 am on Monday. Also had neighborhood noise on the second night, with loud partyers yelling and screaming at 3:30 am. I asked to be switched after the second night and ended up with a great room facing the street - more constantly noisy from traffic, but infinitely better than "people" noise. The rooms themselves are quite soundproof; I never heard my neighbors at all.

Housekeeping was very good - everything was spotless. I never ever heard them in the hallways. In fact, I wasn't even sure they had daily housekeeping at first! So unlike many hotels where you can hear housekeeping chatting away and banging their carts in the hallways early in the morning.

Be prepared for limited channels on the TV and no wakeup calls (at least that I could see). There is no air conditioning and the windows don't open far, so the rooms can be stifling. Window arrangements are different by room too - for example, my first room had small windows that opened about 2 inches outward and allowed no breeze, while my second room had 3 large windows opening inward making the room almost too chilly sometimes.

Did not eat at the restaurant. There's a grocery store on Dalry just a few blocks away, although there's no fridge in the room. There are several restaurants, small convenience stores, Internet cafe, and pubs very close. Avoid the Chop Chop restaurant - we had probably one of the top worst meals we've ever had.

The hotel was located further from city center than we had expected. We walked it once (about 30-45 min depending on your pace), took the bus (10 min), and taxi (10 min, about 7 gbp with tip). Once we learned the bus system, it was quite easy - just catch the 44 or 44A from Dalry a block away; fares are just 1 gbp per person and you get dropped right at Prince Street a couple blocks from the Royal Mile.

Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

The Oldest pub in Scotland. Take the local bus ( No.42) from outside the museum to Duddingston and get off at Holyrood High School, then left along The Causeway to "The Sheep Heid Inn". Lovely old pub, gets busy and they do food upstairs.

Perfect Weather for Scotland We went in September for eleven days and had only one day when it misted. Otherwise perfect weather with sunshine everyday!! Actually a little warm for the month of September.

Last Minute Cancellations The Premier Travel Inn allows you to cancel your booking without penalty up to 1pm on the day of your intended arrival. That makes me feel comfortable in making a booking when there is an element of doubt about my stay.
