Accommodation excellent and perfect location for touring city. We stayed there for two nights and couldn't fault this hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was superb and waitress very friendly. Two for one offer was really good value. Would certainly not hesitate in staying here again.

We stayed in the hotel having been booked in to the Ben Doran but was moved here due to plumbing problems. The room was small (twin beds pushed together)and the ensuite even smaller but was ok for our one night stay. The decoration was modern and clean. The staff, both receptionists and lady who served breakfast were friendly and helpful. We only had breakfast but the choice was good and the food excellent. There was room for car parking and the hotel is about 5-10 minutes from the city centre (£6 taxi or good bus service).

First impressions are quite nice....the bar area. We had 4 rooms booked. We got 2 above the bar area they were very very small but clean. The other 2 at the other side of the hotel, well where do I start... The 1st room we were given, the smell of stale smoke..... ugh!(we were told no one smokes in that room)and above the bin and kitchen area. We asked for another room. We got another one. They hadn't been refurbished and to say tired well...... dated furniture, paper thin walls and to say ensuite!! We had a toilet, sink, bath, showere above the bath, we had no water for a shower on sat pm or sun am, when we told the management they were very rude and didn't know how to fix it or couldn't, we asked what we could do we were told if not happy we could check out.... But we were charged the same rate, but when we complained we received 25% off. The staff tried but never really succeeded to be helpful. At breakfast we waited over 35 min and were told everyone ordered at the same time but really the one nearest the kitchen got served first..... Sorry won't be back!! We go every year to the fringe and this is the worst hotel by far but it won't put us off going to Edinburgh. Maybe when the hotel is finished and the management changed hmhmhm no won't be back!!!

Half of the hotel has been refurbished the other half of not and same price for each room. Single room had damp and wallpaper hanging halfway down wall double room was small, shower was cold, no hairdryer and both very dirty and need TLC. Bar staff and one receptionist very nice. Manager and other receptionist very rude. Manager was away for the weekend wasn't interested in the hotel or the guests. Cut stay short due to attitude of Management. The only good thing was the food couldn't fault it. What a shame as we so looked forward to staying at this hotel.

Hotel tired, staff excellent

Stayed 3 nights, if it was not for a wedding function we were attending we would not have stayed for one. Room tiny, you have to be slim to use the toilet, you have to be small to get in the bath. The shower had no pressure and what little water came from it varied in temperature. The bathroom extractor didn't work, and there was no plug for the basin. No remote control for the TV set, but the room was so small it was easy to reach. On the whole, nothing very much good about the accommodation but on the good side, the staff are excellent, particularly the bar and restaurant staff. The food there is also very good. Unfortunately complaints about the room met with no result other than a small discount (and the promise that the rooms are due to be re-furbished).

Avoid unless you are there for a party

You might be alright here if you are attending one of their raucous functions but anyone else should do themselves a favour and avoid the Minto like the plague. If you entertain quaint old notions like a good night's rest, forget it. You will get thumping disco music till 1 a.m., constant noise from the makeshift beer garden out the front, and when guests do finally return to their rooms the paper thin walls will ensure that you are further disturbed. This is a function led business rather than a residential hotel, a legitimate business model if they are upfront about it but questionable in this location. Lots of small indicators re lack of care on the accommodation side e.g. room telephone disconnected, outdated instructions, TV remote missing, very poor soundproofing. Did not bother to stay for the second night I had booked. Requested compensation and received 25% refund which they were not absolutely obliged to offer under the terms of my booking. Rating would have been 1 otherwise. I stay in Edinburgh several times a year and this is the worst accommodation I have had there.

I recently held my 21st Birthday Party at The Minto and I have to say it was fantastic. The hotel made my party fantastic, with the DJ playing all my favourite songs and a fabulous buffet for all the guests. Reasonably priced and a really nice group of staff... and they even throw in a free posh car to pick you up (complete with lovely chauffer!) Would highly recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a venue!

I am in minto hotel several weeks of the year on business. The staff are very obliging and the chef is outstanding! I have had late checkins and have been looked after and not been seen as an annoyance as in some more salubrious hotels i could mention. They are having a major refurb just now so should be even better soon!

This was the best hotel I have ever stayed in, the head chef is absolutely brilliant, and the food he created was beyond belief. The accommodation was satisfactory but I would still recommend this hotel purely for the food

Minto Hotel...Pull It Down!!!

I have stayed in some really bad places in my time, but the Minto Hotel beats them all hands down. I should have know that when I booked it and they didn't have a working website for me to go to that something was wrong. I should have known from the minute we stepped into their small foyer that something was really wrong and would soon get worse, for what greets you when you arrive is a green brushed velvet arm chair with the greasiest headrest I have ever seen. It was black! The welcome mat had also seen better days. We had to pay for our first night in advance of our arrival(we were supposed to be staying for 2!). We checked in to be told that that the restaurant was out of bounds to ALL guest that night because they had a wedding party booked in. Ok, these things happen. We took the lift up to our room in the smallest lift I have ever encountered. As we exited the lift, we were hit by the most sweet pungent smell with a hint of grease which was so bad it made want to throw up. We entered our room to find that we could barely get in. A foot from our door was the double bed which almost sat on top of the window (which by the way didn't shut properly neither was it double glazed so you got all of the noise from the outside). We walked into the bathroom...ok we backed into the bathroom to use the toilet because once you got on there you couldn't turn around. This would explain the huge amount of dust under the sink...the cleaners simply couldn't get in there to clean it properly. Meanwhile the smell was starting to seep under our doorframe, so we put one of the blanket there to block the smell. To give you an idea of just how small the room was, one of us had to back into the bathroom so that the other could pass by. Now were are to people of average build, not Sumo wrestlers!! Felling totally ripped off at £70 per night, we went out for the evening for a meal. When we got back, the wedding reception was in full flow. We decided to try and get some sleep. As we pulled back the old blankets we horrified to fimd that the sheets were full of cigarette burns, as were the blankets. We called down to reception to ask when this party might end. We were told that that it would end at midnight. At 1:30am it was still going on and we had during this time established that we were right above it. Remember there is no double glazing in this hotel at all. We made numerous calls to the receptionist to complain about the noise but also to ask why a guest not with the wedding party that went on so late would be allocated a room right above it. She had no reasonable reply for us but did apologise. We told her to prepare our bill as would be leaving in the morning. Bearing in mind that we had travelled up by plane to Edinburgh to attend a wedding of our friends we tried to get some sleep. The following day, we went up to the Mount Royal Hotel on Princes Street for our last day and night. It cost us just an extra £15 per night more, but it was worth every single penny. This hotel is right in the heart of the main shopping area, and near gives you good access to sightseeing etc. You need to catch a bus from the Minto just to get to this tourist area. The staff at the Mount Royal could not have been more kind once we'd told them of our plight at the Minto. We were able to have a bath and prepare for the wedding and most importantly enjoy what was left of our long weekend break. Now I do understand that being booked into a room right above a party was unfortunate, but the condition of the hotel is just down to laziness. I truely hope that if this review does nothing other than to stop you handing over your hard earned cash to these people, then it's been worth taking the time to write. Ever wonder why the Minto has no website, that's because there's nothing favourable or photogenic to put on it. My opinion. Bulldoze it to the ground. It truely is an awful place to stay in.
