Perfectly adeqaute place to stay. Elegant lounge, friendly staff. Room a bit cramped but with all the facilities that you would expect. The bathroom was new, modern, smart and very clean. Main problem was that the room was very hot, even at night and with window open (it didn't open very far and, of course, let in traffic noise). Had to have portable fan (provided with room) running all night.

Restaurant has contemporary styling and the food was fine. Service, however, was erratic: At dinner people were being seated in a single area of the restaurant (the conservatory section) which made it feel cramped and lacking in privacy. When a partyy of 8 arrived the staff seemed to forget that I existed and I was left waiting ages for dessert (but they did give a complimentary whisky as recompense). At breakfast the staff were almost too efficient and my coffee and toast were cleared away whilst I was at the buffet getting a yoghurt!

There is a bar in the basement which was full (including non-residents) and was not relaxing - better to have a drink in the lounge or restaurant.

The hotel itself was fine enough - not too far from the centre of the city and a number of decent restaurants close-by. The first room we were given had a bathroom that had a terrible damp smell. We complained, the manager came up to check and moved us straight away - good service. The second room was much better but throughout the night - up until around 2.00am- doors were continually banging along the corridor - some due to room service, some not. Also, outside there was quite a lot of noise from various people singing / shouting. As a consequence we had two very sleepless nights - but didnt complain to staff as what could they do about it if the problem is down to other guests and people outside? If you sleep like a log, the hotel is fine, if you don't, then stay elsewhere. We certainly wont be staying there again.

Nice hotel, friendly people, COMFY beds

After reading other reviews, we decided to stay at the Bruntsfield. It was about what we expected. Nice spacious room. Comfortable beds and nice clean bathroom. We found the water pressure very good for the showers which actually made enough of a breeze that the thin shower curtain blew all over and stuck to your body. That was kind of annoying. Our room looked out over the back of the hotel with a fantastic view of the Castle. All in all we were happy with our stay, but felt it was a little expensive for what it was. It is a little distance from City Centre, but is in a pleasant area. I would recommend the Bruntsfield and probably stay there on a future visit if I couldn't find a better deal pricewise elsewhere. The staff was friendly and helpful for the most part.

Opinion on Bruntsfield

I booked a last minute deal for this hotel and read all the reviews so was expecting a large room at least. The room we got turned out to be about the size of a travelodge room and the bathroom was the same. We were on 2nd floor so had problems with shower. There was no pressure. We were at the back with a small window looking out onto other back gardens so possibly all the larger rooms were to the front. Hotel is quite old which was reflected in our decor, fixtures and fittings but the room was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. They are in the middle of putting up a new front canopy so has scaffolding all up the front. Entrance is through the King's Bar at the moment. Car parking is tight but a space can generally be found for you. Quite a walk to town centre but buses are frequent and get you there in 15 minutes. It's a good trade-off for being able to park your car. Breakfasts are very nice and everything is available. No stinting there. All in all I felt we got a good deal but certainly not the room you see in the picture they show you. Where that room was I don't know!

Pleasant stay and great breakfast

We had a pleasant stay at this hotel. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, although some of the fixtures are a little dated and i did have a few problems getting hot water to come out of my shower but it did eventually work!
The hotel is in a pleasant area overlooking a park about a 10 minute bus ride from the centre of Edinburgh. Buses come along every few minutes and stop just a short walk from the hotel so getting into the centre of Edinburgh is really easy and convenient. Its situated on a main road, so there is some noise, but its not as noisy as staying in the centre probably.

Breakfasts at the hotel are really good. A very good continental and hot breakfast is available, really nicely served and presented with lots of choice. You can have just about anything you want- even Haggis! A very full and generous breakfast that will keep you going well up to lunchtime.
We had one evening meal in the Cardoon restaruant in the hotel. The dinner menu is quite expensive(about £15-£20 for a main course), however, the food is great so we didn't mind paying for the convenience of eating at the hotel for this price as we really enjoyed our meal.

We were a little dissapointed with the Kings Bar- We were hoping to eat our evening meals here and were hoping for a more 'country pub' atmosphere, but its quite a smoky, busy and lively bar and is not that big. However to be fair to the hotel, is it advertised as a 'lively' bar, and its lively rather than rowdy.

There didn't seem to be a great choice of restaruants in the immediate area, but you are on a frequent and short bus route into the town centre so this isn't really too much of a problem.

Staff were polite and helpful

Would recommend this hotel, and stay here again- no major complaints.

Excellent - loved every minute!

We stayed at the hotel in January 2004 & as we had got such a cheap deal I had my fingers crossed that we wouldn't be disappointed & we certainly were not. We had a twin room, which as commented by others was massive and the bathroom was sparkling clean - a must for girls! The staff were very helpful in telling us the best places to go & booking taxis etc. We could walk into town in 15 minutes- walking off our big breakfasts- but usually got a taxi on an evening for about £4/5.

I would highly recommend the hotel for service, price and location. Just shop around as prices vary from website to website.

Friendly, efficient and convenient

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in February. Our room was a large size for a city hotel and the bathroom was huge! We had a lovely view of the castle from our window which looks fabulous at night.

The hotel is a short walk from the centre of the city - probably about 15 minutes to the bottom of Princes Street (House of Fraser end) if you stick to the main roads. There are a few pubs en route if you feel like breaking the journey up! We also found another route to the centre which was more leafy and scenic and ended up by Waverley.

The breakfast at the hotel is very comprehensive - fruits, yoghurts, cereals, pastries and the traditional Scottish Grill (including Haggis if you're brave enough!).

The staff were fantastic throughout our stay - very friendly and efficient and there is secure storage for luggage if your room is not ready when you arrive. The portering service was as good as that at 5* hotels I have stayed at. I highly recommend this hotel and will certainly be booking again next time we visit Edinburgh.

We stayed at this hotel on a weekend break in January. Although not very busy (but who is on the 2nd weekend of January?), we could not have chosen a better hotel. Our bedroom was large, comfortable, good quality and was spotlessly clean. The hotel restaurant was modern in design and served fantastic food. A wide choice of dishes were offered at breakfast from both a buffet table and direct from the kitchen - no tired hot buffet here! We didn't use the bar much but we could see that it was a popular bar with both hotel guests and locals which seemed to create a good atmosphere. Best thing of all was the friendly and efficient staff who were always smart and eager to help.

Top Local Tips for Edinburgh

shuttle bus There is a shuttle bus from the airport to town. It does not go to all hotels, including the Best Western Brunstfield. I'd suggest a taxi from one of the shuttle stops to your hotel if you have heavy luggage. I had 2 piece of luggage AND hand baggage and had to manage all up 2 stairs onto the bus and then off again. In my view the taxi cost (used going back to the shuttle stop) was worth the cost!!

Castle gun Time your trip to the castle so you see them firing the big gun, I think it's at 1 o'clock every day

airport transfers when you arrive at the airport take the airport bus which is cheap return into the town centre neat the main train station however if you do have alot of luggage and do have limited mobility i would recomend with a great taxi company we went with called Thistle Executive who were more than helpful with us all.
