It's a pity that there isn't a zero rating because this place in its present condition certainly warrants it. My notes at the time read: "What can be said about this place? Avoid it like the plague. Paper peeling off the walls and stuck back on with masking tape. No heat from the wall radiators, so a portable radiator was provided instead. No soap in the bathroom, which seems to be a converted cupboard. No soap tray, even. Another cupboard with a toilet in it. Clean linen and towels, yes. Door jambs looking as if they have all been attacked with crowbars. No wardrobe or storage place for clothes, and only one excuse for a chair in what was set up as a twin room. Faded carpets, apart from a new square on the first landing." That sums up room 7. Trying room 4 in its place, we found that the toilet in the (slightly larger) cupboard was being refurbished (i.e. it was full of tools and something else by the smell of it!) We were warned about this,(not the smell) but accepted it, as it was marginally warmer on the lower floor and on the front of the hotel. We were then told to use the separate toilet and separate shower room just around the corner. In the morning, the toilet floor was awash from overflowing water from a leak somewhere or other; as was the carpet in the corridor. Take waders or stout shoes! No soap in the shower, although there was a hand wash (nearly empty) in the toilet. The curtains in our room were not wide enough to shut to completely, so a compromise had to be reached about where we wanted the light to be let in. It was also necessary to pin them to the wall using the now-familiar lone chair and the curtain pole. They henceforth billowed-out like sails on a tea clipper in a full wind. This was caused by the ill-fitting double-glazing. Breakfasts were good, (but how could you get that wrong?). Try freezing-cold plates with hot food. That's how.
Overall, very poor, and not recommended in its present condition, and I suspect that Health & Safety or a Hotel Inspector would have a field day here at the moment; and yes, I do have the photographs to prove it.

Shambles!

We stayed here for one night to attend attend a family party elsewhere. The room cost £85 for the night for a double room. On arrival we were asked to wait until they found the key for our room. 15 minutes later we were told they would give us a different room as they could not find the key for our room. On entering the room we found 2 single beds instead. The room was very basic and although cleaned to a certain standard, the room had not had a thorough clean in a long time ie the sink had stains all down it which looked like dried blood and the toilet was far from clean. We then used the toilet and discovered it didn't even flush properly, it almost overflowed and took 5 attempts to empty, nice! As we were heading straight out we did not have time to say anything to staff and they were all seemed busy in the bar. On checkout in the morning there was no-one around and so we posted the keys into the box for this as we had a train to catch. As we were only there as a means of somewhere to sleep we tolerated it, however if this had been a romantic night away and had to spend time in the room we would definately complained. £85 the night! This room would have been expensive at £30 the night, considering it wasn't even a double. Needless to say, would not stay here again!

I will certainly be back to stay in this hotel. I recommend the hillside hotel to anyone who is staying in Dunbar. The service was first class. You have a choice of bar or rest meals. With a similar menu. You get a very healthy portion of every course. I challenge anyone to have a starter and main, and see if they could manage dessert. You will leave this place completely satisfied with all services that they offer. I will certainly make a point of staying here again in 2007.

We are a young family with 2 babies(under 2) We didnt stay at hotel, but went there for lunch. We were very impressed with this lovely hotel. The staff were very friendly and made us all feel very welcome. Meals were very tasty and filling. Kids meals great! Next time we visit Dunbar, we will definetly stay here. Special thanks for making our visit special.
