t knock it till you try it.from Hatch40
Spent Friday 5th and 6th of April at hotel to celebrate a Birthday.
Have to say that all staff in the Hotel from the Reception staff, waiters , bar staff and even the cleaning staff were really freindly and greeted you with a smile.
On Friday went into Dumfries to shop and expolore. Went back to hotel and spent afternoon in Fantastic health club using all the excellant facilities.
Had a wonderful evening meal in the Rievers resturaunt, Classy resturaunt with good food, good wine and very proffessional waiter
Five minute walk into town centre.
On the Saturday night went the the show Just Paul and John and had a Ball. Facilities, food and Tribute band all Great. really good atmosphere and our party of 6 had a ball.
We stayed in the park view part of hotel and had a wonderful room, but there was extensive evidence of a lot of upgrading being carried out in rest of hotel as the management stated and looked to be almost if not finished.
We will definately go back in the future as felt it was good value for money.
Old and Over pricedfrom lisbob
We did however eat in the Cabens Arms and lovely friendly wee pub and that was great and I would recommend that.
Most guests are only too happy to thank our staff for an enjoyable stay and this sort of feedback is rarely posted although we do make a point of displaying complimentary letters we recieve from our guests in the hotel
We will shortly be adding these to our website too.
I try to respond to all reviews posted on and to respond to constructive criticism.
The comments made about about the heating in the hotel have been noted although we do have thermostatic controls in all bedrooms and this should not have been a problem.
It is always difficult to have a temperature in the hotel to suit all guests when some of our guests are elderly and thermostatic controls would seem to be the best all round solution
The comment about the curtains being closed in the hotel is particularly strange and I can only assume that this was because the hotel was full and this in itself speaks volumes about the hotel when this is traditionally the quietest time of the year.
Any suggestion that there has been a lack of investment in the hotel is quite ludicrous when it is considered that we have invested over £1million in the provision of leisure facilities and £1million in the addition of new bedrooms and conference facilities.
The refurbishment of the hotel is an ongoing issue and as well as refurbishing around 20 bedrooms in 2006 a further programme of improvements will see 30 bedrooms refurbished in the coming months.
This work asctually began in January and guests are already benefitting from these improvements which has also seen the addition of disabled bathrooms and walk in showers in several bedrooms in response to the feedback we have recieved from our guests.
Our hotel is also regularly inspected by both Visit Scotland and the AA who have also awarded Reivers Restaurant an AA Rosette.
Disasters with the Fire Alarmfrom dadgad
In a possibly related problem, the fire alarm went off two nights in a row - the first one was 3 am the second at 1 am. Judging by comments and relaxed attitude of firemen, this has happened before. No member of hotel staff acting as fire marshall, no-one counting guests all out, no-one ensuring guests went to correct assembly area. Have spoken to (apologetic) hotel management about this and they promise to address it.
Daughter enjoyed pool and health club.

Mixed feelingsfrom burnleyontour
Absolutely fine - a little let down by the food and reception stafffrom OvalOffice2008
Reception staff were helpful on arrival but it took about half an hour to check out when we left - we were quite a large party and the person at reception simply didn't seem to know how to reconcile the bill. Since he appeared to be on his own - despite it being the morning when others might have been checking out - everyone else had to wait for us to check out - including one person who simply wanted to pick up his newspaper.
Rooms were comfortable and a decent size. The food was a little disappointing, largely because I think the chef was trying to be over-elaborate and was over-complicating what could have been very good, simple dishes. There is a nice cosy bar downstairs (a little difficult to find).

Anyone looking to book the hotel in the future will be pleased to learn that the ongoing refurbishment of bedrooms will see the completion of over 20 bedrooms in 2006.
Regular entertainment will continue to be a regular feature of any visit to the hotel and as well as offering regular entertainment with Dinner Dances and Ceilidhs over the summer months our new programme of Cabaret Nights have now been confirmed for the Winter/Spring Season.
Enjoyable stayfrom A TripAdvisor Member
We welcome an increasing number of golfers to our hotel every year and like the above party most return year after year because of the excellent choice of courses and reasonably priced golf courses in Dumfries and Galloway.
The hotel also offers golfers a choice of dining options and the screening of the World Cup and other sporting events on the big screen in Sawney Beans Bar in the evenings is appreciated by golfers visiting the hotel.
Ongoing refurbishment will see the completion of over 20 bedrooms in the hotel and will address the only adverse comment highlighted in the review

We will continue to take on board comments made by our guests and will strive to make improvements where possible.
Over the Winter months we have continued to refurbish a number of bedrooms and completed the refurbishment of the changing rooms in our leisure club .
All bedrooms in the hotel are also non smoking
Top Local Tips for Dumfries
Shopping OK for shopping but the main street is a bit untidy/litter
Cavens Arms, Buccleuch Street This Place serves fantastic food and real ales. Their fish and chips is out of this world and for a snack you can get home made soup, a long roll with various fillings and a cup of tea for £4.99 - a substantial snack. Good service, nice staff.
Coast Road We drove along the coast raod from Kirkcudbright to Dumfries. If the weather is good, it's a great drive with some lovely scenery. It takes you back to when you used to enjoy driving - and it's free too!!
