Historical Traveller Reviews of The Cairndale Hotel And Leisure Club

t knock it till you try it.

from Hatch40
We booked our trip after browsing on internet and before we had read the tripadvisor comments. After reading the comments that had been left, on the whole last year we were a bit wary about going to hotel as most reviews had given the Hotel a right kicking.

Spent Friday 5th and 6th of April at hotel to celebrate a Birthday.

Have to say that all staff in the Hotel from the Reception staff, waiters , bar staff and even the cleaning staff were really freindly and greeted you with a smile.

On Friday went into Dumfries to shop and expolore. Went back to hotel and spent afternoon in Fantastic health club using all the excellant facilities.

Had a wonderful evening meal in the Rievers resturaunt, Classy resturaunt with good food, good wine and very proffessional waiter

Five minute walk into town centre.

On the Saturday night went the the show Just Paul and John and had a Ball. Facilities, food and Tribute band all Great. really good atmosphere and our party of 6 had a ball.

We stayed in the park view part of hotel and had a wonderful room, but there was extensive evidence of a lot of upgrading being carried out in rest of hotel as the management stated and looked to be almost if not finished.

We will definately go back in the future as felt it was good value for money.

Old and Over priced

from lisbob
Hi we have just returned from this hotel and I am sad to say I would not return. I have just read the other reviews and I am sorry to say nothing has been fixed. The rooms are far far too warm the old storage heating doesnt switch off!! The heat in the room was unreal. The room was dirty old and not worth the money we paid. I would not recommend this hotel it is far too overpriced as I dont think it has been decorated since the 50's. During the day they have every heater, light on full and ever curtain shut throughout the whole hotel!! It is very strange.

We did however eat in the Cabens Arms and lovely friendly wee pub and that was great and I would recommend that.

Anyone reading reviews here will see just how infrequent they are and more often than not it is the problems that are highlighted and in my opinion not the opinions of the vast majority of people who stay in our hotel.

Most guests are only too happy to thank our staff for an enjoyable stay and this sort of feedback is rarely posted although we do make a point of displaying complimentary letters we recieve from our guests in the hotel

We will shortly be adding these to our website too.

I try to respond to all reviews posted on and to respond to constructive criticism.

The comments made about about the heating in the hotel have been noted although we do have thermostatic controls in all bedrooms and this should not have been a problem.

It is always difficult to have a temperature in the hotel to suit all guests when some of our guests are elderly and thermostatic controls would seem to be the best all round solution

The comment about the curtains being closed in the hotel is particularly strange and I can only assume that this was because the hotel was full and this in itself speaks volumes about the hotel when this is traditionally the quietest time of the year.

Any suggestion that there has been a lack of investment in the hotel is quite ludicrous when it is considered that we have invested over £1million in the provision of leisure facilities and £1million in the addition of new bedrooms and conference facilities.

The refurbishment of the hotel is an ongoing issue and as well as refurbishing around 20 bedrooms in 2006 a further programme of improvements will see 30 bedrooms refurbished in the coming months.

This work asctually began in January and guests are already benefitting from these improvements which has also seen the addition of disabled bathrooms and walk in showers in several bedrooms in response to the feedback we have recieved from our guests.

Our hotel is also regularly inspected by both Visit Scotland and the AA who have also awarded Reivers Restaurant an AA Rosette.

Disasters with the Fire Alarm

from dadgad
Easy to find hotel in centre of Dumfries. Staff generally friendly. Sadly a spell of (unusually) mild October weather seemed to cause havoc with the heating/air-con system. Basement restaurant (Sawney's) absolutely icy - had to ask them to turn air-con off. However rooms above health club really hot and in one case dripping (literally) with condensation.

In a possibly related problem, the fire alarm went off two nights in a row - the first one was 3 am the second at 1 am. Judging by comments and relaxed attitude of firemen, this has happened before. No member of hotel staff acting as fire marshall, no-one counting guests all out, no-one ensuring guests went to correct assembly area. Have spoken to (apologetic) hotel management about this and they promise to address it.

Daughter enjoyed pool and health club.

Best Location in Dumfreis

from ScottishName
Stay here quite regularly when visiting my family who live there. I think it is the best hotel to stay in when in Dumfries - best locayion in the center, lots of car parking and has good facilities. Pool, gym, restaurant and bars. Only down side is that it is quite dated now, decor and style. However, I go with two young children and they just love it as the staff are excellent with them and it is not so busy that you feel awkward with them runnning about the place. One tip - if upstairs and ask for the menu, they will give you the expensive restaurant menu - get the one downstairs in the health club bar and it has all the usual bar type meals and lighter bites that may suit better. Restaurant is too formal for us with the children so we use the main bar. Very little choice of hotels in Dumfries and even although this place could do with a bit of a refurb, it is clean, very friendly and the best location/facilities by far.

Mixed feelings

from burnleyontour
Stayed for one night whilst touring on motorbike. Hotel in good position in Dumfries and looks impressive as you approach. Handy parking for bike but not a huge car park in general. Rooms a decent size, clean but a little dated. Patch up grouting in bathroom looked like it had been done by a six year old with a spoon! Reception staff were uninterested and unhelpful. Pool area was nice, fitness area looked a little cramped. Had evening meal in nearby chinese restaurant, very nice. Breakfast was excellent, way above average, must use local produce.

Absolutely fine - a little let down by the food and reception staff

from OvalOffice2008
Hotel has a good location near the centre of Dumfries. There is a car park at the back, although this was full when we tried to park there.

Reception staff were helpful on arrival but it took about half an hour to check out when we left - we were quite a large party and the person at reception simply didn't seem to know how to reconcile the bill. Since he appeared to be on his own - despite it being the morning when others might have been checking out - everyone else had to wait for us to check out - including one person who simply wanted to pick up his newspaper.

Rooms were comfortable and a decent size. The food was a little disappointing, largely because I think the chef was trying to be over-elaborate and was over-complicating what could have been very good, simple dishes. There is a nice cosy bar downstairs (a little difficult to find).

good quality

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Hotel as a group of 12 golfers and can honestly say the hotel is of average quality a bit dated but the staff and food were far nicer than the average surroundings. Great leaisure facilities after a long day on the golf course and very good food offering several meals of differing types to satisfy everyone. The staff were extremely pleasant and will definitely recommend this being the place to stay for other golfers.
Management Response from MatthewWallace
It is very gratifying to be thanked on a job well done and the above comments were warmly welcomed by everyone in the hotel.
Anyone looking to book the hotel in the future will be pleased to learn that the ongoing refurbishment of bedrooms will see the completion of over 20 bedrooms in 2006.
Regular entertainment will continue to be a regular feature of any visit to the hotel and as well as offering regular entertainment with Dinner Dances and Ceilidhs over the summer months our new programme of Cabaret Nights have now been confirmed for the Winter/Spring Season.

Enjoyable stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just returned form a nights stay at the Cairndale. The room we had was a bit old fashioned but everything was spotless. We went to the pool which was first class. Our dinner at night was excellant and the staff were polite and helpful. We went into the hall where there was entertainment, this was very enjoyable. The prices at the bar were very reasonable compared to some hotels weve been at. Breakfast was first class and when we went to check out the Manager couldnt have been more helpful. We will certainly be back.
Management Response from MatthewWallace
Another enjoyable visit to the hotel.Thank you for the useful comments received.
We welcome an increasing number of golfers to our hotel every year and like the above party most return year after year because of the excellent choice of courses and reasonably priced golf courses in Dumfries and Galloway.
The hotel also offers golfers a choice of dining options and the screening of the World Cup and other sporting events on the big screen in Sawney Beans Bar in the evenings is appreciated by golfers visiting the hotel.
Ongoing refurbishment will see the completion of over 20 bedrooms in the hotel and will address the only adverse comment highlighted in the review

Efficent friendly and faded in parts

from fletch91
Twelve of us stayed on a midwek golfing break. The hotel is a bit dated in parts and the bedroom furniture could do with some updating. The rooms varied in size and quality but all were quite adequate and clean. Towels were replaced daily. The staff throughout were friendly and helpful and this applied especially in the dining room where it was always busy at main times. The buffet breakfast was excellent and replenished regularly. Evening meals were also good and varied. The health club, pool, steam room and suana were spotless and are well worth a visit. Parking was easy and pricing at the bar was very fair. We would certainly return and if you are going on a golfing holiday then avail yourself of the free services of the golf co-ordinator who did most of the arranging on our behalf.

Excellent stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
After booking a stay I read the trip advisor comments and was a bit wary about what to expect. Having just returned I can say don't believe all the negative comments you read. The hotel was clean and comfortable the rooms big and more importantly the staff were all very helpful, polite and attentive. The prices in both the bars and baracuda cafe were very reasonable.
Management Response from MatthewWallace
It is very gratifying to be thanked following an enjoyable visit and this is much appreciated by everyone concerned. A thank you goes a long way and it recognises the hard work and effort that everyone puts into meeting guests' expectations.
We will continue to take on board comments made by our guests and will strive to make improvements where possible.
Over the Winter months we have continued to refurbish a number of bedrooms and completed the refurbishment of the changing rooms in our leisure club .
All bedrooms in the hotel are also non smoking

Top Local Tips for Dumfries

Shopping OK for shopping but the main street is a bit untidy/litter

Cavens Arms, Buccleuch Street This Place serves fantastic food and real ales. Their fish and chips is out of this world and for a snack you can get home made soup, a long roll with various fillings and a cup of tea for £4.99 - a substantial snack. Good service, nice staff.

Coast Road We drove along the coast raod from Kirkcudbright to Dumfries. If the weather is good, it's a great drive with some lovely scenery. It takes you back to when you used to enjoy driving - and it's free too!!
