Rarely have we experienced such friendly, attentive, yet unobtrusive service in a hotel. The Auld Kirk is a real 'find'. Owners, Peter and Tony are slowly and lovingly restoring the hotel and it is emerging into a quite unique establishment. We always opt for bed and breakfast terms in hotels until we have decided that dinner will be pleasant, but after having eaten a delectable meal on our first night, we dined at The Auld Kirk every night. The food is superb. (We cite the confit of lamb as paricularly delicious) Rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean. This is a three star hotel which simply means that there isn't a swimming pool or gym, etc. This didn't matter at all. The Auld Kirk is super. We recommend it highly and the best bit is the extremely reasonable prices. Put all this together in a gorgeous spot like Ballater and you've got a real winner. Tony and Peter are two of the nicest hoteliers we've ever met and Tony's cooking deserves a Michelin star. We will definitely return.

Top Local Tips for Ballater
Area Ballater is in royal deeside which is near to Balmoral and the village is just beautiful.
Not much choice in Ballater The Auld Kirk is the only place you can sit outside and have a drink, other than the really big hotels which are out of the centre of the village. There is very little choice of food, other than hotels and one restaurant the "Italian" we tried was of very poor quality with terrible service.
Great walking You can pick up walking trails just about everywhere, so you can do loch's, hills, rivers! It's beautiful!
