Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton Coylumbridge Hotel

Excellent for the kids - not for romance!

from MikuDumfries
My husband and I stayed at the Coylumbridge...not realising beforehand that it was such a family orientated hotel...as we were on a romantic few days away (without our children!), it was disappointing that the hotel seemed to be overrun with kids...to the extent that we chose not to spend our evenings in the lounge and bar areas, and instead, took our drinks up to our room. We had booked a suite for our stay, which was well equipped, spacious and clean. The public areas of the Hotel are well maintained and tidy. Reception staff are helfpul - my husband had the misfortune to fall ill while we were staying and they assisted us in contacting the local Doctor. The food in the main restaurant is buffet style for dinner, which was certainly not appealing and we chose to eat in the smaller restaurant, which was waiter service (a bit slow mind you)...food ok, but nothing special. If you are looking for a good value, fun holiday with the kids, then this is the place to come - they are certainly geared up for children with plenty of activities and a "fun house".

Needs an upgrade!

from ANYA2001
We have just returned from a weekend break at this hotel. We have, stayed here three times over the last ten years. In that time not much has changed. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms leave a lot to be desired, ours had mould growing at the windows, dirty curtains, dirty carpet, peeling bathroom roof, broken tiles in bathroom, I could go on. {The hotel is to undergo a refurbishment over the next three years, long awaited!}
If you have children who are under five, you really have to take them to the children's high tea they don't get a choice when they have to sit with you at your meal. I don't know of many children who would eat, pate, mackerel, lamb etc, saying that though the meals are well presented and cater to the adult taste. The breakfast is suberb, a great choice for all nationalities.
The pool is satisfactory, mouldy around the tiles {i think this is going to be upgraded though}If your children are over five they can join the Coylum capers club, although they need to have a parent present until the age of eight. There seemed to be plenty for the children to do.
The hotel is three star status { not four} sometimes the prices can be a bit steep if you are taking children { it is supposed to be a family hotel though}Roll on the refurb!

Not really 4 star quality

We read the variety of reviews on this hotel before going there for an eight day break earlier this month (if we had read the reviews before booking we might have been more in two minds about it, but we were looking for something that would please our two early teenage sons, so the facilities seemed good)
The earlier reviews we read sum up the hotel perfectly - a mix of the good (sometimes very good) - great breakfasts, excellent service from the receptionists and the 'activities' staff (especially the pool and organised games staff), pretty good amenities (Fun House, tennis courts etc even though you had to pay extra on top of what was already a pretty expensive daily rate) - and the mediocre - no air conditioning in the rooms (which were generally pretty basic in terms of facilities and decoration), no refrigerator, minute second (child's) toilet, limited internet access (only one terminal that broke down for three days of our visit), generally poor service in the dining room (it seemed as though the regular coach parties passing through had the benefit of the better service) and, on the whole, unimaginative food at dinner time.
What made the holiday was the exquisite scenery and the other locally available activities although again these were expensive, presumably because there is a captive market.
An enjoyable holiday then, and we would certainly visit the region again even though we might look for other accommodation that would hopefully reflect the four stars that Hilton Coylumbridge aspires to.

Fantastic Family Hotel

This hotel was brilliant and extremely suitable for families.

The staff could not have been better and the leisure facilities were superb. My children were of mixed ages 7 to 14 and they all thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and the skiing!

Restaurant was very good and a nice bar layout.

All in all we were very well looked after and we cannot wait to return.

Family fun at Coylumbridge

Having read a review in the Sunday papers, we opted to take a week-end break at the Hilton Coylumbridge. The hotel is set in a magnificent pine forest near the Highland village of Aviemore. With two children under 10 we were hoping to find a variety of activities that would allow us the opportunity to relax . We were not disappointed ! From mini golf to organised activities, our children joined in from morning until early evening. We did consider walking into the village for dinner - however, with two Restuarants to choose from and live entertainment in the Lounge, we were happy to spend our time within the hotel itself. The 5 star service and high standards of cleanliness made up for the fact that the bedroom could have done with more modern decor.

All in all we had a great break and value for money at posssibly the best family hotel in Scotland.

Fun Family Hotel

from ghirl123
This hotel is very much a family hotel - most stuff is geared towards kids - we stayed overnight on a DBB basis.... - there is lots to do for kids - 2 small pools, a swing park, magic shows, supervised swimming etc. The River Druie runs behind the hotel - and although not one of their listed attractions - we loved going down for a walk through the woods by the water. (It's behind the swing park.) There is also the "Fun Park" across the road which has a small bowling alley - kids adventure zone and an American style diner. The room was OK, all we were looking for was comfortable and clean - which we got. The food was excellent and all staff were extremely professional and very friendly. This part of the highlands is beautiful, and you will never be short of things to do - even if that is just admiring your surroundings! - If you go - enjoy!

Just back from a great hotel break, myself, husband and our 2 young children. When arriving it was pretty late and it wasnt well sign-posted, but the entrance was fasinating for our younger ones, seeing the lights in the trees, made there day, it was fantastic to see there eyes light up. Upon arriving at the Front desk we were greeted with the most delightful girls, so helpful, friendly and willing to do anything to make your stay worth while. we were upgraded to a Family suite which consisted of a double bedded room with bunkbed room on the side, just the great privacy of that room as excellent, and it had just been refurbished too which was even better - brand new furniture, bathrooms etc. There was seperate kids teas around 4.30 to 6pm and activities for them from 6 - 9 so we got our dinner in peace. what more could you ask for. Pool area was great for children, some of the leisure staff were excellent with the kids, giving them fun bags and playing with the kids. Dinner was excellent too, not too rushed, but a nice atmosphere. I think this is one of the best hilton hotels, as its for familys, theres nothing worse than taking your children somewhere they are not welcomed, but this hotel is one of a kind. I couldnt have asked for anywhere better! I dont know how people can complain about this place, they are obviously in the wrong place.

We booked a 2 night stay at the Hilton Coylumbridge for a special Burns Supper weekend for our party of 14 and were all absolutely shocked at the standard of this Hilton hotel. The accomodation was old fashioned and tatty with long narrow bathrooms which were in need of a good scrub. The buffet style evening meals were disappointing with service so poor that we managed to get the attention of the waiter to get only one drink each. Breakfasts are standard buffet style and not too bad but as the whole weekend was such a disappointment for what we expected from Hilton, none of us would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Aviemore.

Fantastic Family Hotel !!!

After reading the reviews about this hotel, I expected it to be shabby but basically good for families as recommended by many of my friends. I am just back today and feel compelled to write a review to put the record straight. How wrong can anyone be, it was not shabby at all and the rooms was surprisingly very nice - well equipped and lovely decor. We stayed on the ground floor and had two double beds for myself my husband and two children aged 3 and 5. It was the last weekend of their Easter holidays and we enjoyed every single minute of our stay there. The food was very good and the hotel itself lovely including all the satff. As for facilities for young kids - they will not be bored. They had entertainment all day if required and a seperate FUN HOUSE with a large soft play, climbing frame area and mini golf (both of which you had to pay for but were discounted for residents) , th epool area is excellent also. There was entertainment at night for the kids like a childrens disco and at the high tea they had a clown blowing up ballons etc. Really, if you have kids this place is the best. We used to go to Crieff Hydro alot for weekend breaks but this is much better - do not hestitate - go and you will have a great time and so will the kids.

We will not be hurrying back

This hotel is certainly not 4 star Hilton. We stayed there years ago when we had children and thought it was wonderful. We also stayed about 5 years ago and thought it a bit dated. However, this time we were not at all impressed. Our room had a damaged wardrobe door which had just been painted over as had the bathroom door. Dinner arrived all on one plate ie chosen meal and the vegetables on the plate and just thrown down in front of us - for 4 star I would have expected waiter/ress to have brought and served veg. The prices of drinks were ridiculous. Bottle of wine was going to cost around £25/30 - thought it interesting that nobody had a bottle of wine the night we were there. However, breakfast very good. We had a pint of beer and one glass of wine and the glass of wine cost £6.00. We were very pleased that our "deal" only included dinner on one night so the next night we could eat out and the food was much better. We ate in the Bridge Inn in Aviemore (walkable) which was 100% better. We will not be hurrying back.

Top Local Tips for Aviemore

Main dining room Good wholesome, plentifull, tasty food. well served in the grant room. First class breakfast. Nice fresh spicy haggis.

The great outdoors The activities within the Rothiemurchus Estate are great! DH and DS tried clay target shooting, DD and I went pony riding (the owners were FANTASTIC; so friendly) Would love to have tried quad biking, but DD too young. However, all these activities soon mount up! Visit the Cairngorm Reindeer, and the sleddog centre - again, nearby.

Go There Places to visit: Landmark, Highland Wildlife Park, Funhouse. Golf courses and distilleries for us grown ups
