Historical Traveller Reviews of Clandeboye Lodge Hotel
Falling Starsfrom BurtonAyr
Reception staff and restaurant staff were helpful.
Grounds are attractive and well maintained.
Deluxe bedroom was a clone of a typical roadhouse but sporting an oversized, very comfortable bed.
Other aspects of this 4* AA establishment were disappointing. Coffee-making facility included a kettle that had to be filled from the bath tap as it was too tall to fit comfortably below the wash hand basin tap. Two pieces of unwrapped shortbread that had to be fished out from a large glass jar which was surely unhygenic. No spoons or plastic stirrers.
Dust on lower level surfaces
Plenty of towels but no heated towel rail.
No room fridge. Room safe was locked on arrival requiring an enquiry at reception as to how to decode same.
Morning paper that was part of the package never materialised.
Breakfast was not inspiring with a limited and unimaginative range of hot dishes. Ulster fry was not over-generous. Tinned fruit was offered. Orange juice was good but the apple juice was "watered".
Hotel facilities are clearly geared towards conventions, weddings and other functions. Tourists/holiday makers especially with young families might be disappointed.
Great Getawayfrom netcare
Not too far from Belfast and a stones throw from the beach.
The food and ambience was fantastic.
A little gemfrom AlexBelfast
It was for my wife’s birthday, so this time we opted for a junior suite and the bed was the biggest and most comfortable I have slept in for quite some time (it was sooooo comfy!!!!)
We had an evening meal in the restaurant which had a great atmosphere and where the food was excellent (trust me, the spring rolls and the langoustines are a must!!!). The staff were also very friendly and attentive.
I would say that we have found a little gem in this hotel and it is becoming a firm favourite of ours. We will definitely be returning soon.
New Years Breakfrom Kent-family
We chose the Clandeboye Lodge for its location, good reputation, and celebrations for the New Year, and were not disappointed.
The food and entertainment (including casino) were superb and we all had a fantastic New Year and a wonderful four day break in Northern Ireland.
We have recommended this hotel to all our friends and families back in Kent.
A really awful waste of moneyfrom LouCoClare
On the matter of drinks. I looked for a half bottle of red wine any red wine and I was told in fact they didnt have any, They kept saying everything was in there other building as they had a wedding earlier and they had no access to the drinks there. On the menu was an extensive cocktail list which when I asked for one they couldnt make any as the ingredients where you guessed in the other building. I asked for a sambucca same story, Advocat same story. The staff in the restaurant although nice did not seem to have any training. There where many other things that were not available drinks wise. The receptionist was a very unhelpful girl I asked for a price list as I thought that we where being overcharged to be told that it is in the process of being printed. The rooms where very nice and I have no fault with these.
I asked to speak to the owner the next morning and he left me waiting for 2 hours. He was very arrogant and was not prepared to take on board any of my comments except about the bar. He did take off the horrible food off our bill but said the reason for such a small menu was NOBODY EATS OUT IN NORTHERN IRELAND ON SUNDAY NIGHT and he said I would not be aware of this as im not from the north. There was also a problem with exchanging Euro and the rate was very inflated and when I queried this I was told that they had to lodge it and the bank charged, Surely they have to lodge all takings. They offered me 8.90 sterling for 20 euro. The hotel we stayed in the next night was called The Old Inn Crawfordsburn approx 5 miles away and they had 400 for food on the Sunday as apposed to maybe 8 in the Clandeboye I am very dissapointed with The Clandeboye and would certainly not recommend this hotel. Maybe the owner of the Cladeboye should take a trip to The Old inn and see in fact how many people eat out on Sunday and also what good menu they have. Name and address supplied.

Loved the Hotel and the Wedding Packagesfrom Caroline70
Fab - We paid the deposit and all there and then. And god help the Banqueting ladies, i called and called and called them with reams of questions, and each time i was happily satisfied with an answer or a solution.
The hotel invited me up on the 4th to go through everything, so on the 5th my mum and i were free to get pampered, hair, nails, tans, you name it we got it.
The 6th of Jan was here, my wedding day, i was so so so happy - i have to say it was definately the best day of my life, forgetting the fact that the minister forgot his words, and the best man lost his speech, the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel were undoubtedly excellent, so discreey, yet very attentive, both mine and my husbands parents were so so so impressed.
My cousin just got engaged, and needless to say after going to my wedding booked the Clandeboye. Cant wait for that wedding, going to be a great day out.
Countryside retreatfrom OldBear
We arrived 3 hours early and asked to leave our luggage. The hotel were able to provide with our room immediately which was an executive room on the 2nd floor with views over the surrounding countryside. A big plus for my wife was the provision of a real salon style hairdryer and not the usual cream coloured poor quality type you find in most hotels.
The bed was very comfortable, we should have checked the pillows and asked for a change, which they will provide, we found the ones on the bed very firm.
We had dinner in the restaurant which was nice and the offer included a bottle of wine between two.
Breakfast was very good also, plenty of choice and for both restaurant experiences the staff were excellent and very attentative.
This is an independant hotel which care about the service they provide. They did seem unaware of some features of the special offer we had booked but provided the requests without question. Our morning newspaper and coffee failed to appear in the morning but this was only a minor factor. All this for a special offer during January 2007 for £98 a double executive room. Well worth a visit.
First class all the wayfrom A TripAdvisor Member
A delightful stayfrom johnSomersetEngland
There was a very efficient and welcoming reception, including porterage.
Our room was furnished and decorated to a very high standard, better than some 5 star establishments in which we have stayed.
Because we prefer blankets and sheets to a duvet our bedding was changed on request.
We dined every night in the restaurant, where the choice of menu was first class. and the food was beautifuly prepared and presented, with a comprehensive wine list.
Throughout our stay the staff were extremely efficient and obliging, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them.
Top Local Tips for Bangor
a peaceful haven This is just a great place to get away from it all. It is close to all the attractions of Belfast, Bangor etc., but is situated off the main drag, so it feels like its in the middle of the countryside. Not sure it would be the best place for younger people looking for fun and lively atmosphere, but for us it was perfect. It is probaly a pretty quiet place generally, so might be better for couples and those looking to get away from it all. Great food and wine, and lovely staff.
The Clandeboye Lodge Hotel Great for a drink and reading the newspaper
Sightseeing We visited Bangor for a wedding and had planned to see around the town itself the following day, however, the weather was not good and so we abandoned that idea. We then decided to take a drive down the coast road of the Ards peninsula and stopped in several small villages along the way. This is a beautiful drive and the character of the places and people you see along the way iare unlike that in other countries around the world. I would recommend that travellers from outside Ireland take this drive and absord the charm.
