From the friendly greeting we first received to the farewell chat with the owner we felt welcome and very well looked after during our New Year 4-night break. The rooms need a little modernising, but the family rooms we had were clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Our children, aged 10 and 12 were thrilled with the pool and the games room and my husband was thrilled with the full-size snooker table! The food was beautfully cooked and the variety was good; the service was friendly and prompt. All in all a great family hotel - would definitely go back there again.

We stayed with friends for three nights over the New Year holiday break. The staff were very hospitable and worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. The food was of a very high quality and the portions extremely generous. The table decorations and general aura of the dining room on New Years Eve were very inviting - a lot of hard work had been put into this!
Nice touches were the cocktails on the first night and snacks towards the end of each evening's entertainment. Good value too.

New Year 2007

We have just returned from an enjoyable short New Year break. The hotel is well situated near the promenade and shopping area. On arrival we were made very welcome by the Proprieters, and were shown the well laid out dining room, bar/dancing area and quiet lounge. Our room was comfortable, clean, with an en suite and much appreciated tea and coffee making facilities. The en suite was satifactory with clean towels. However, this area is a little tired and refurbishment would improve the rating. The kitchen staff worked hard to provide varied menues at all times including a super gala dinner for New Years Eve. The evening entertainment was good although some performances lacked luster and not everyone could participate. The sport facilities are very good, especially the swimming pool. The staff must be given credit, they were very pleasant and communicated well with visitors despite being under great pressure. We had a good few days and will consider returning for another winter break.

The best weekend ever

I have just been at the Wight Montrene for 3 nights with a walking group of 52, ranging in age from 55 to 84. I have not received a single complaint or moan. We could not have been looked after better.

More than a two star

As we were three generations (I being the middle generation and mum to a 12yr old), I needed to find somewhere to accomodate all our needs. The Montrene was the perfect choice, and definately deserves more than it's 2 star rating. Everyone was friendly and did all they could to assist me with my disabled mum, especialy during a day she was not well enough to leave her room. My son had a great time in the family atmosphere he felt so comfortable with, meaning I could relax. Nothing was too much trouble for proprieters or staff alike whose hospitality was second to none. The bedrooms are mediocre, but clean and all public areas of a good standard. Breakfast is amazing with dinner consisting of good quality home cooking. I spent 7 yrs living in hotels around the UK, the bigger the hotel the more impersonal. Would I book The Montrene again? Without a doubt.

Quantity & Quality of Evening Meals

Excellent location,facilities very good. Quality and quantity of food for evening meals left a lot to be desired and the service was extremely slow.
Breakfasts were as good as advertised.

Having just returned from a week at the Wight Montrene I would like to say how much my wife and I enjoyed our stay there, the food was really lovely and the staff extremely pleasant and helpful, a special mention for Poppy our waitress at meal times and Alex behind the bar.

Top Local Tips for Sandown

Sandown restaurants Hi, Sandown is pretty lacking in decen restaurants, La Scala (Italian) was OK. For great food try Morgans in Shanklin (poncey decor, but good food). The Spyglass in Ventnor was the best pub with food that we found (huge portions and great quality)

Isle Of Wight Zoo If you like big cats go and see the tigers at this zoo. there are plenty of tigers, a few lions and some jaguars. make sure you take the guided tour. The enclosures seem a little small but these are cats that have grown up here and I suppose its what they are used to. The tigers all seem to have real character and many have been hand reared and are very friendly with the staff. take your camera and you can have some stunning photos to remember your visit.

Sandown zoo Do not think this is just a zoo. It is a wonderful place to visit. We went there for an hour and did not leave until 4and half hours later. It is a wonderful place to go to see the big cats.
