Excellant staff, extremely clean.

Rooms are pretty, bright and very clean. We stayed in a family room which had a 6ft bath in the bathroom, complimentry toiletries, fresh white towels, tea, coffee making facilities, modern TV, hairdryer, comfortable beds, clean, crisp white sheets. Food very good and plentiful. Staff extremely polite and helpful.

As an ex pat now domiciled in tthe Philippines I had to write to let you all know of the total satisfaction I had with ourstay last October at the Wight Montrene. I was en route for an annual gathering of my UK club and decided to base myself on the IOW to take in a few special evenings and local events.
I found the food, accommodation, conditions, staff and everything about the hotel to be as advertised. I was a late booking and was welcomed like part of a family although never been there before. (Chosen from the internet here in Oriental Mindoro I may add.)
As a fun diver here in the Philippines I was especially interested in the local diving club's access to a really spacious swimming pool. I also took adavantage of the other facilities such as the Sauna, Steam Room, Jacuzzi. I would have used the solarium but living where I do it is a bit of coals to Newcastle but hey it looked great!
I also heard good comments about the Beauty salon (Oasis)although I did not personally try out any of the treatments my partner did and she remarked upon the wide range of treatments and therapies available.
Overall we were delighted and willl no doubt return next time we are in the UK. Gareth and Lhiza

An oasis of calm,cleanliness, and service + a swimming pool in a busy seaside town, a few hundred yards from the beach. A 2 star hotel with 4 star food. Eat breakfast, forget lunch. Quality dinner but small menu. Dogs welcome - ours was!

We had a great time, the staff were very frendly and polite, the food was excellent, and the rooms very comfortable, this hotel sould be a 3 star not a 2 star.

I have just returned from my second visit to the Wight Montrene and I can definitely say that it was as good an experience as my first! My wife and I took my aunt and uncle with us this time and they were extremly impressed with the food, service, cleanliness and friwendliness of all involved in our stay. We will certainly be visiting again later this year and are already planning a return visit with my family for 2009.

Forget the 2 stars, this hotel is worth much more than that. Cleanliness, facilities, food, staff, location, all top rate. Our third visit and they can expect to see us again.

Good value and comfortable

Stayed one week, half board. Rooms, and indeed whole place, was clean, well furnished and comfortable. Staff friendly and efficient, good bar, food very good, if a little plain, but was well cooked with a varied menu. Most other residents were OAPs and the entertainment was geared for their age group, as was the heating, which we found a bit warm. Ample parking off road, good facilities (pool, games room, mini gym). We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay and would recommend this hotel.

Good for groups

I booked a weekend stay for 17 people for a hen party in June (all aged 32-37), and we had an excellent time. The staff are amazing and were so helpful during the endless booking changes (thanks Karen and John!). A DJ was booked for the Saturday night because we were there and he was excellent - had a great range of music and was very obliging in playing requests. Bar manager was brilliant Our group had a tab behind the bar which we just added our drinks to all night, and settled in the morning, and the tab wasn't "padded" as I've found in other hotels.

Very good value for a weekend away. Reasonable prices in convenient location. The breakfasts were excellent. Most of the dinner was good quality but the choice was not great (the starter of egg mayonnaise and main course of cottage pie raised a few eyebrows). The rooms and bathrooms are very clean but extremely dated. Some of the furnishings provided good photo opportunities as we couldn't believe that they still existed.

Therefore the only negatives were the choice of menu at dinner and the dated furnishings, both of which are outweighed by the positives. As a group we had a fantastic time! The staff did whatever they could to help us (even down to storing our champagne in the hotel fridge until we needed it for our afternoon activities!) and were absolutely wonderful. Every one of our group commented on how much they enjoyed the weekend, more than at some 4 star hotels. I booked another hen weekend in May last year at a 4 star hotel and would recommend the Wight Montrene ahead of the 4 star hotel. If I was booking another group to the Isle of Wight I would definitely be contacting the Wight Montrene!

Deserves another star!

This hotel is good value for money. It is clean, friendly and professionally run. It's got a great clean swimming pool which we used a couple of times, a sauna, steamroom, a jacuzzi, a trymnasium and a separate games room (table tennis, mini football, etc). We were allowed to bring our small dog with us (at no extra charge!), which was great, as there are not that many hotels in Sandown that will let you bring your dog. The staff also booked our Red Funnel ferry tickets and were very helpful to change the times for us when we got stuck on M25 on our way from London and had to phone them to let them know about the delay. The parking is provided for free and there is plenty of space. We booked on a B+B basis and the breakfasts were very tasty and plentiful using various ingredients produced at the Isle of Wight (we absolutely loved the creamy yoghurts!). The only reason I didn't rate it with a top mark is because: 1) our bathroom didn't have proper showering facilities - there was a bath and a hose which needed to be attached to the cold+hot taps, but it didn't fit, so we had to run baths instead of being able to shower (in all fairness, had we asked for another 'attachment' I am sure the hotel staff would have tried to sort it out); and 2) the hotel is not located on the sea-front, hence none of the rooms are sea facing (although the advantage of this is that the rooms are very quiet) - and this is a matter of personal preference too.

Lovely and friendly

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in June07 (just 3 days) and would most definitely come back. The food was very good - especially the breakfasts and everyone was very friendly and helpful. The room was quiet and everything very clean and tidy. The evening entertainment wasn't quite to our taste perhaps - but that's just us!

Enjoyed the stay very much.

Good Value Hotel

Have just returned from a really great weekend at the Montrene. The facilities in this hotel are excellent although the decor is a little dated. The rooms are well equipped, clean and spacious - much larger than many 4 star hotels I have stayed in! Breakfast was huge - great menu choice - enjoyed by all my party including two children. Swimming pool was lovely - not used by many guests whilst we were there so lots of room for us! The hotel offered nightly entertainment and a well stocked bar for those who wanted it. Proximity to the town and beach made this an excellent location for us - great not to have to take the car everywhere.

All my party really enjoyed our stay at this hotel - would thoroughly recommend it.

Wight Montrene - Service Superb with Common Sense

Stayed three nights half board (bed, breakfast and evening meal).

Service - superb - combined with common sense (will elaborate later)
Staff - very pleasant and accomodating throughout.
Food - original and very tasty with good portions.
Drinks - bar tab can be added to the room bill and paid on check out.
Room - clean, decor fine, ample drawer and wardrobe space. Only gripe was that there were only one socket you could use which was used by the TV, which meant unplugging it to charge mobile, laptop, hair striaghtenersm, etc.
Internet - free wireless connectivity.
Entertainment - not really much aimed at our age group (37 & 44) while we were there, however, we came away to relax and get away from it, not to party. Also, due to the time of year, it wasn't too busy and mainly had OAPs, so there were not really the people staying at the same time as us to perhaps justify more expensive entertainment. Would be interested to see what they do during the holiday season. Many other nice pubs nearby with entertainment.
Common sense - I had a few little requests that deviated from the norm and were accomodated every time without issue, eg. bit of extra potatoes or bit of extra meat for superb cold gammon ham, an extra coffee at the end of the meal.

Great time in the Wight Montrene

Great place to stay, comfortable, large room, with en suite and a good hospitality tray, replenished daily. We booked B&B, and the variety for breakfast was amazing, everything from cornflakes to kippers, via the full monty (Sausage, egg, bacon, black pudding, beans fried bread, mushrooms and tomatos) as huge or as small as you required, the tea and coffee hot and fresh.
Although not tested, the evening meals seemed greatly appreciated by the other residents. There was nightly entertainment, (which is more than can be said for Sandown itself!) The pool, sauna, steam room, games room, and snooker room were excellent. There is also a small splash pool and playground for younger visitors.
Overall it was really clean and tidy, with very friendly and helpful staff, a superb location, near the town and public transport. It has a large (free) car park.
They were also happy for my dog (a Springer Spaniel) to stay free of charge.
Highly recommended.

My wife and I, have visited the Montrene ( now Wight Montrene ) for a short break for each of the last 5 years. It is well located close to the beach and town with a safe parking location. The staff are very friendly and efficient and the food (we stayed on a bb & em basis) is of a good english type with additional portions available to those with a more hearty appetite particularly on the substantial breakfast menu. A real effort has been made in the last year to upgrade the pool area facilities with sauna , solarium and steam rooms now available. The rooms are well appointed clean and comfortable. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Chose this hotel based on TripAdvisor feedback - 2nd time we've been surprised when we arrived at a UK property recommended on this site. For all the good intentions of the management and staff, this hotel and the food are stuck in the past.

We booked 3 nights dinner, B&B but soon switched to B&B only after our only dinner there. Smoked mackerel starter with a huge dollop of fiery horseradish dumped on top did not look and was not particularly appetising. Having forgone the "diced lamb" on the menu we went for the gammon with potatoes and the dreaded peas and sweetcorn from the freezer. The chef could do so much more if he tried/got some basic training.

The evening entertainment is very much of the Blackpool variety which I wasn't expecting.

On the plus side, the hotel is clean, centrally located and friendly. I suspect more suited to the older generation.

OK but could have been better for the price

The hotel was a bit of a disappointment. The double bed was very hard and my wife had a sleepless first night and ended up in the single bed. The "indoor" swimming pool requires a trip through the garden to get there which is OK if the weather is fine but I wouldn't fancy it on a cold rainy day. The cold water taps in the bathroom seemed to supply permanently warm water despite how long you ran them. There is poor sound insulation and we often heard a lot of noise from the room above. The staff were very friendly and the proximity to the town and beach was good. The parking was OK. The decor and television were dated and there was an "eighties" feel to the building - it could do with some investment.

Top Local Tips for Sandown

Sandown restaurants Hi, Sandown is pretty lacking in decen restaurants, La Scala (Italian) was OK. For great food try Morgans in Shanklin (poncey decor, but good food). The Spyglass in Ventnor was the best pub with food that we found (huge portions and great quality)

Isle Of Wight Zoo If you like big cats go and see the tigers at this zoo. there are plenty of tigers, a few lions and some jaguars. make sure you take the guided tour. The enclosures seem a little small but these are cats that have grown up here and I suppose its what they are used to. The tigers all seem to have real character and many have been hand reared and are very friendly with the staff. take your camera and you can have some stunning photos to remember your visit.

Sandown zoo Do not think this is just a zoo. It is a wonderful place to visit. We went there for an hour and did not leave until 4and half hours later. It is a wonderful place to go to see the big cats.
