This is a lovely hotel in super grounds. We found all the staff most helpful. Our room was very comfortable (the weather was rather humid and the room got hot so some air conditioning would have been appreciate) but the room was clean and comnfortable in all respects.

We were welll looked after. Breakfasts were good and we enjoyed two evening meals in the restaurant beautfully presented and served.

Hotel is a few yards from the train station and approx 10 minute pleasant walk to town centre.

Arrived at hotel 9:00AM (we had been pre informed that room would may not be ready until approx 14:00 & was not) Reception area was clean, but like the rest of the hotel is in need of updating. The receptionist was professional, but cool. We were informed that we could leave our baggage until our room was ready & we headed into town. The hotel has a well kept garden which looks on to York Minster.

Around 13:30 I phoned the hotel to enquire if our room was ready, but again it was not. I asked when, 1430 perhaps? I was told

We returned to the hotel around 14:45 & our room ‘204' was ready. I had expected that our bags would have been taken to our room, but no. Having paid the extra £20 upgrade & had been previously told that we had a ‘lovely, quiet room' we were expecting the type shown in the brochure

Yes, it had similar furniture, but the king-sized bed was lumpy & very uncomfortable. The pillows were hard & well used. The room had not been cleaned correctly as there were urine stains around the toilet area & many of the surfaces throughout had ‘ring marks'. Many of the skirting boards were covered in thickly layered dust. We had pre requested a high floor to reduce the noise, our room (204) was on the second floor & near to the car park\main road & was often noisy, especially between 22:00 – 02:00. The bathroom door would not shut correctly & the extractor fan is was very noisy. ‘Bath robes & slippers are NOT part of the upgrade. The shower was good, but overall we were very disappointed in the room given

We ordered sausage sandwiches at the bar .The cost of the sandwiches was £6.95 each. Our order arrived, the bread was stale, the sausages were obviously reheated & there was no garnish or spread! We complained & asked for a refund & given along with an ‘apology'. We were not offered any ‘complementary' alternative.

Breakfast, very nice & wide choice.

The hotel does not deserve the 4* & does not offer good value for money.

Top Local Tips for York

A great resturant Near the edge of The Shambles is an adorable resturant called "Gert and Henry's". It is is a white half-timber house. The food is wonderful!!! Try the sauted chicken with herbs or the roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. To die for!!!!!

Book.....or go out early!!! It would appear that if you wish to dine in York...... make sure you're out of the hotel pre-8pm or book. Otherwise you may find you get turned away from many restaurants as they appear to stop serving food post 9pm due to being busy/ over-subscribed. Please note the above doesn't apply to Oriental / Indian establishments.

Come on the train and then just walk! The centre of York is so small that any hotel within the walls is within easy walking distance of the station if you arrive by train. Don't bring a car, you won't need it once you're there and it will be expensive and frustrating to find a parking space. Book up for a free walking tour at the tourist information office in the station for an excellent overview of the history of York.
