Top Local Tips for York

Visit the Mason Arms Just a hundred metres down the road from the hotel there is an unassuming pub called the "Masons Arms". Have Sunday lunch here if you want huge portions of excellent value hearty Yorkshire food served by really friendly 'real' people . Just make sure you arrive early!

Just make sure to plan ahead We have a family of 5 -- and made a last minute planning decision to go to York, England. If we could have done it again -- I would have put in at least 2 weeks worth of planning. Accomodation choices were very slim for our family size (they wouldn't let us squeeze 5 of us into a double room, even though the 2-year-old could sleep in a crib). York is also very expensive it seems. Advice: Bakeries seem to have the best prices for a good meal (get a beef pasty!)

viking museum & railway museum must see great viking museum in York amongst the shops so look out otherwise can end up walking past. Fantastic railway museum (even though I am not a train lover), wonderful building and great facilities. the York wheel (just like the London Eye) is at railway musuem and is a must. Get the miniature train/bus which runs outside railway museum which takes you straight outside the Minster. Dont think 3 days is enough as there was so much we didnt see. would recommend 4-5 days to see everything. we left and took tour of yorkshire dales which was breathtaking and well worth a visit. would recommend tour of york and then to stay in dales for another 2 nights.
